any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Looks to me as if it has abruptly stopped its uptake of water. Assuming that it has received adequate water, and as this is SoCal, I would assume that means a gopher, the "Pink," or some other fungus/root rot.

At any rate, the prognosis doesn't look good.

I would mark the spear - it may already be "dead" - just doesn't know it yet.
