Got 10 washingtonia robusta as a "free gift".  After 2 weeks, every single one germinated.  I ordered some phoenix theophrasti seeds from another vendor.  What arrived looked more like dactylifera, with the elongated seeds ~2cm with pointy edges.  I decided to keep them and get theophrasti seed from another source.  So far, 5 of them have germinated and are sending up their first leaf.  I picked a few sabal minor seeds from a blue plant at a botanical garden, and one of the seeds has just broke the ground.  Enjoy!

Now there's the rub. I have only one Atlantic/Jamaican tall in my 5-Coconut garden. I planted it in the garden on 30th of January from the greenhaus. The Jamaican tall hasn't shown any signs of sunburn nor cold damage compared to the other three pacific talls which look as if the mother of all bombs went off by them once Spring arrived.  One interesting characteristic of my Jamaican/Atlantic tall is the color: Completely green. But I mean Hulk green evenly spread throughout the stem and leaves.

I can see why the Atlantic tall is rumored to be more cold tolerant than the other varieties. If true, I don't have a figure. And come next winter, I will not chance the Jamaican to test out the cold tolerance theory and ditch utilizing a brood lamp on it.

Here are some pics:

 58fff84ff0df7_Jamtall20170425_180956(10)58fff848f13b3_Jamtall20170425_180956(9)(58fff8447dd95_Jamtall20170425_180956(7)(58fff8403544d_Jamtall20170425_180956(8)(58fff8a2e099e_Jamtall20170425_180956(4)(

Oh yeah. It has the most coolest of husks of all the coconuts in the garden. It has a peculiar shape to it.

The two oldest leafs which are are wriggly and scuffed up are the same way I received the coconut. I other words, I received the coconut with those leaves in that fashion. They were damaged before I got the coco. Not because of my weather.

LoL Dave!. I must admit, the Jamaican tall is the most robust of all the seedlings I have ever had. The leaves are like a coarse plastic. The wind wont move 'em. If it makes it, it will be a monster.

I've heard rumors that they are good down to about 27F, but I can't vouch for this by personal experience.  I've not ever had one and left it uncovered during a freeze.

I can say that they have fronds the whole way from the base of the palm to the top, giving it a much more robust crown than the Malayans.

Set a personal record for least time in the soil for germination.  I would have expected it to be a washingtonia or a phoenix, but this time it was adonidia merrillii.  I collected 8 ripe red fruits in Miami on 12/26/2018.  After making it back to Lakeland on 12/27/2018, I stripped all of the fruit and fiber off of the seeds with needle nosed pliers and gave them a 36 hour soak, changing the water four times.  They were put into baggy with 50/50 garden soil and perlite mix and placed on a heat mat.  I decided to do a check on my germination today and had 7 out of 8 already sprout.  Anyone looking for an easy germination target should consider these, especially if you are in 10a+ and can plant them outdoors.  I labeled some of the visible germination in the picture below:

A special thanks to @Josh-O for this one.  15/20 seeds germinated in 6 months.  A few holdouts left.  This is the first one to germinate now that it has its first leaf completely out.

Those familiar with the Remarkable Palms of Tampa Bay thread by @RedRabbit have seen some of the specimen palms I've posted.  Several mature Archontophoenix alexandrae posted on that thread have recently set ripe fruit.  I decided to use the recently collected seeds to check whether removing the fiber from the seeds would affect germination.  I checked them today while sowing some of @DoomsDave's infamous Brahea hybrids.

I had 25 seeds with all of the fiber removed.  They were placed in a small cup with ~1 inch of damp potting mix between them and the bottom with ~2.5 inches of moist medium above them.  They were placed on a heating mat that kept the temperature ~90-100F.  23/25 germinated (most shown).  Two damped off.

I had 10 that I sowed in the same manner with fiber still attached.  5/10 have germinated and one rotted.  The seeds on the right germinated (hard to see) and the ones on the left felt firm but had not germinated.

At least in regard to germination, removing the fiber seems to speed things up slightly.  Survival after germination is the question now.
