Dypsis baronii  'black stem'

Here are my results from the purchase of  20 seeds from Bill.  A few germinated promptly. Then no action for a long time.  Since it had been almost a year I decided to 'unpot' the seeds for a look.  The results include 2 large, early seedlings, 1 intermediate seedling, and 5 'pencil-point' recently germinated seeds.  4 seeds had rotted away to nothing, and 8 seeds were still firm.  However, 6 of the remaining, firm seeds float, and only 2 are both firm and sinkers.

  Therefore, be careful about the germination container and be very careful not to discard any seeds.  It seems that this species has erratic germination rather than one pulse of germination for the majority of the seeds. I used my standard mix of 1 part peat and 2 parts perlite.  I use electric bottom heat on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours, producing a distinct pulse of warmth on a daily cycle.

I got 3 out of 10 (I think) pop within a few months. Nothing still on the rest, but it's been less than a year. So it's great to hear that they can be slow. I'll keep holding on to them!
