I was in a Fossil store in the Pacific Northwest and ran across this nice specimen of a palm leaf fossil.  They recently sold it for $25K.  Not a bad price for your old leaves.

That just looks too perfect to be true.

Believe me, it is true. I have already seen similar objects.

Yes, it is a real fossil, I took a long hard look at it.  They painstakingly ground the slate from around the leaf then stained the actual leaf to make it stand out from the shale/slate rock.  That is why it may look fake.

If my hunch is on target, I'd bet this specimen came from the same vendor ( maybe is the same guy..) who had a booth at the gem and mineral show in Tucson this past Febuary. It was the only booth selling such specimens at the show I attended.

Like Mike mentioned, a lot of work goes into the finished product, which reflect the prices listed during the show. I also had to stop and inquire about authenticity when looking over some of the specimens.  Lots of really neat stuff. Would love to have a few of these displayed around the house.

I purchased a section of fossilized palm trunk from a vendor at the Tucson show.  The vendor said it was from Louisiana, so I guess it would be Sabal. I have seen these frond fossils at the show.  They are really desirable, but completely beyond my budget.  :(

In one of the early IPS Newsletters, some photos sent to me by Paco Martí of Spain were used to create an article about palm fossils.  See page 2.

That looks great, I saw a similar fossil for sale in a gallery in Taos, NM last year. I thought it looked fake also.

Here's some small pieces of petrified palm (palmoxylon?) that I found on our family's land. Larger pieces have been found through the years.

I planted the first of many sabal mexicanas out there yesterday :) It's probably the first palm out there since those fossils were living trees :)
