Purchased two mule palms about 2 months ago. One (the prettier of the two mind you) had some black on its fronds. Looked like tar dried on it. It didn't bother me much because it seems to be on the lower fronds so I just figured it was changing color before the lower fronds start to wilt away. NOW I join this amazing group and start learning about fusarium. Is this something I should start taking serious? I am going to start reading up on fusarium wilt now. Any info would be appreciated.

Maybe but not fusiarium wilt. You can't miss those symptoms. Palm leaves start dying on one side only, then on the other. So you have a leaf with one side green and the other side yellow or brown. From time symptoms appear palm will be totally dead within weeks. I don't know if wilt has reached Jacksonville yet. The wilt I'm talking about kills queens, mules and Washies for sure.

When you see this in person,  it really looks like tried tar. When buying it I saw it and it didn't phase me at all. Don't know why.  Upon searching over and over the net, I've yet to discovery any pics resembling the black running down the spine like that. Some of the spots resemble what's described as leaf blights. Then considering I thought it looked like tar I found "Tar spot disease". I actually hope it's just that because that is more visual than it is hurtful to the tree.
