Hello to All,

Hope everyone is doing well.  Here's a few pic's of the Sylvester Date Palm after the 15-17 degree freezes in Houston in Jan 2017. The inner crown is coming back and had produced 2-3 good layers.

Based on the pic's, it is ok to now cut-off the 80-90% dead/brown leaves/branches or should I still leave them?  As discussed previously, we are now in no danger or cooler temps.  I would like to also know of a good fertilizing schedule, if applicable, at this time to accommodate the palms new growth?

Thank you very much - tstex

It's "Okay" to cut them, but the possibility of "pencil necking" the palm will be increased too. If you can wait it out until a more full crown, you should.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Ok, thanks - I'll wait.  I was just contemplating if removing a few of the totally dead branches would be of benefit to the palm,  would do so.

Regards, tstex
