How hardy is Yucca aloifolia ‘Purpurea’?  I have one in a pot that doing great but the one in the ground died on me… not as hardy as they are label…. in 8b here they seem to do very good. Anyone else trying this yucca in zone 8 or colder?

I grew these here in Portland.  Winter turned them to mush, with lots of black spots everywhere.  Come spring they looked like a mess, and I ripped them out.  They were still alive but I'm not sure how long it was going to take for them to look good again only to have the same thing repeat the following winter.  They were in a spot that was somewhat sheltered from rain in free draining sandy soil.  Temperature wise they can take cold, but I suspect our damp wet winters do not agree with these.

I ended up digging mine up. It's in a pot now. It needs full sun to get the nice purple color. But it did put on some nice growth this year. Will see what it looks like come spring in the unheated "shady" greenhouse.
