Always amazes me how humongous the spathe/inflorescence can be on Dypsis saintelucei. Sometimes they've gotten so large they just

snap off at the base. The spathe on the smaller of the three has a diameter almost as large as the trunk itself.

Seems like a huge waste of energy for the plant but there must be some reason it evolved that way...

X2 what richnorm said. Wonder how much faster it would grow if you removed them at an early stage.
