In answer to my own request, I discovered by searching for Euphorbia Obesa, that my plant is not a Euphorbia at all but it is a cactus called  astrophytum myriostigma.

Thanks for solving your mystery, I looked at the post but would not have been helpful for an ID. Good to know what it is

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

Yes, you are correct; and I'm curious, did you just find it, or did you plant it there? They can't handle too much moisture, FYI.

I purchased it at a local nursery for 3 dollars. I have a planter that is 2 meters in diameter and only 60 cm high filled with mostly sand and a pumice type of material, which we have here, called hal. I have several succulents, pachypodiums and cacti that are doing quite well there.

Sounds like a very nice "garden." Post some pictures of the whole thing?

Here is a link to the garden's web page featuring a database driven catalogue with different search parameters as well as several videos including our popular PlantPorno series showing plants in bloom and in seed.
