I am still having trouble absorbing the absolutely beautiful and wonderful collection that is the breathtaking Burtscher's garden. I feel like I couldn't spend enough time there. Like a book that begs to be read over and over. Big thank you to the Burtscher's for sharing!

Bobs yard and this thread is overwhelming...

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Fantastic garden, thanks for posting!  The attention to detail, color, texture, etc. in Bob's garden is just mind blowing.

Gorgeous garden and beautiful photography. Every grouping of shots had at least one money shot. Incredible.

How do they keep the gophers away? Looks like Gopher Xanadu

I've been noticing lately how I seem to see more of these spectacular "tropical" gardens of such a high caliber in California than other palm growing places in the US. I suspect it is since CA is not a tropical climate, the prevailing vegetation is not lush by any means, and the resulting desire is to counterbalance that climate/prevailing flora as much as possible. I guess that in places like FL or Hawaii, the tropical looking plants/palms (and real tropical ones) are commonplace enough and can grow without copious irrigation, it isn't such a savored spectacle anyone feels the need to display or prove it can be accomplished as much.

Catching up from a 5 year hiatus from Palmtalk, so I apologize for bringing up old posts.  What a wonderful yard!  This one deserves to be bumped as it sets the bar for how tropical palm gardens could look in Southern California.

Hey Bill. I quit after visiting Bob's yard. It was depressing.

...

(kidding!!!)

I'm still here, just extremely busy with other things, and traveling, not too much time left for gardening. Just watching stuff grow (and die) what I still have. I need to start visiting and photographing gardens again someday.
