It was South Florida's largest tree. It made Terminalia arjuna look like rootbound shrub in comparison.

Glad I got to see it once up close a few years back... RIP.

Wow, that is a shame. I wonder how some of the other large trees did; Cavanillesia platanifolia, Sterculia apetala, and Terminalia arjuna.

Eric-- not sure how much (other) damage Flamingo sustained or when they might reopen. Some of the damage in Davie was not too bad. Jesse Durko lost only a couple of trees/limbs and is back up running. Almost zero damage to trees around Hard Rock casino as well. Will try to get out that way soon...

Arjunas out at Greynolds Park golf course in NMB are a mixed bag...some really trashed some not bad at all. Will try to get some pics tomorrow.

I was at Flamingo Gardens two Saturday's ago on the 23rd, as it was a free day for visitors, sort of a county-wide 're-opening' event for parks. The damage I saw was less than what I was expecting. There was a lot of canopy damage, with large open expanses now throughout much of the shaded areas near the entrance and by the museum and meeting room. Sections of light and moderate shade now exposed to full sun were showing serious sun burn on the plant material. Trees and large plants were down in the aviary, but the structures all seemed intact. I didn't venture to the back half of the garden, but figured it was more of the same. Free admission sure does bring out the visitors, it was the busiest day there I had seen since the late 1980s. I think Wilma did more damage, when it came to the loss of the number of trees and species.
