Trunk rot? Fungus?

Just pruned a huge variegated ginger which was growing like crazy around this palm and noticed the damage to the base of the trunk. This is a King palm. Should I be concerned? The spear is still green and intact, but the trunk seems pretty damaged.

yikes! What a bummer.

I would cut it down and start over since the trunk will never heal up.

looks like some critter has  been hard at work perhaps?
