I got some bald cypress seeds from a local tree and want to know how to germinate them. I know you need to cold stratify them, but how? How have you germinated them (if you ever did)? And does anyone know which part is the actual seed out of these two pictures?

I think the top picture is the shell and the one below it is the actual seed?

Correct.  I just threw these in a bucket of soil and they germinated.  I did absolutely nothing special to them at all.

So no cold stratification? Just throw and go? I am just paranoid, I don't want to mess these up and have to wait again until next year to try.

Seeds are the middle picture of the three pic post.

In VA, if you mix seed with potting soil and overwinter outdoors, you'll have plenty of natural cold-stratification. Then just sow in spring as weather warms.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

Do I give them water and is it ok if the whole pot freezes (a zone 7a freeze at worst, if that means anything)? Also, when I sow them in the spring will they have already of germinated or do they do that after? I never cold stratified any seeds before.
