Time to fertilize, what are you using this year?

Posted

Nursery Sure-gro for palms.  It is the only thing I use in my garden.  I put it on everything in the ground.  For pots, including orchids, I use Nutricote for palms.

I'm going organic this year ,I dont get enough heat for the time release stuff it just sits there for years.I'm trying Dr. Earth Organic 7.

Using Dynamite (Nutricote) and Osmocote. I've noticed that a month after application Dynamite has not really dissolved and I can still see the little pellets. Is this normal?

I am looking into alternating with soluble fertilizer applications and bought fish emulsion. Let's see...

I am using a blend of 15-0-5-23-2  @ a rate of 160 pounds to the acre, amonium sulfate with kmag and sulphur mixed in and enough humic acid to be at 21 pounds to the acre, 160 does not sound like much but we do multiple applications like this one through out the year. so it ends up close to 1000 pounds per acre, just not all at once.

in the container nursery we use 14-6-8 with a minors package, and scotts brand starter for the small stuff.

and it gets a regular shot of foliar fert through the sprinkler system with injector.

Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.

Frank,

Dynamite will be noticeable for many months. If you squeeze them and their still hard, it's working and still releasing fertilizer. If their mushy, the fertilizer has run out.

Is vindaloo a Madras curry as I found both to be very hot , much to my liking.

Vindaloo for fertiliser ?

Wal, vindaloo usually has a NPK of 3-1-2 which is fine for your more tolerant species, the next day things are a little different

Posted

I don't know about Madras, but Vindaloo is an English creation and Tikka Masala was first created in Glasgow, Scotland.  Don't you just love things that are authentic.

I generally use unbranded soluble palm fertilizers with NPK ratio of 3-1-3 + minors.  They are usually actually 15-5-15 or 21-7-21.  I have been considering a more organic approach using seaweed based ferts or similar, but I'm not really sure yet, however I do like to experiment.  I started using slow release pellets, but found they weren't ideal for pot culture as they are more difficult to apply and can contribute towards excessive salt build up.

I've always used lesco tropical and palm ferts. I'm too lazy to use anything but slow release pellets

In addition to Suregro, I use my horse manure.  It doesn't need to be composted as it doesn't burn like chicken or cow manure.  I just let it dry for a few days and then work it into the soil.  Since I have horses, I have a continuous supply!

Radman: Where do you get Dynamite out here? I occasionally see Osmocote, but never see Nutricote or Dynamite.

The mention of manure has reminded me that I have just recently started incorporating manure into my potting mix, so I guess that is also part of my fertilizing regime.  I'm currently experimenting with a soil-less potting mix, so I thought the manure would be a useful additive.
