Well, based on today's forecast for the next week, that is a joke.

Yeah that to bad you guys are getting so cold. Hopefully after this you'll have warmer than normal temps for the month.... Thats how it usually works for me.

According to Accuweather I may get down to 25F this January same as December.... only time will tell.

I have then "greenhoused" AKA circus tents. Inside the tents the palms are mulched with rope lights keeping the ground warm. The ground inside today when I got back into town wasn't frozen inside despite the temp being 18F! Before they normalized the temps in side were decent and above freezing, sadly I doubt my current setup will prevent going bellow 32F when Thursday and Friday lows hit us. Only thing else I can think of would be to get frost blankets and wrap them for those days, but for safety until they are hardy enough to be exposed Ill keep them tented like this til they reach that size. IMHO the setup I have will give me anywhere from 1 to 3 half zones (e.g. a to b ) depending on how the tent holds up.

Other than that I am out of ideas. When All is said and done Ill be at the ragged edge of hardiness for my trachycarpus, but they are young and obviously tender. So my main line of defense sadly is a hope we return to normal temps and then spring comes earlier. This is a winter of losses for most of the eastern US save for maybe far south Florida (im ignorant to their situation, but yall seem warm enough). While I hope for the best, I'm starting the mental process of getting ready to do removal of both marginal and native plants. What Im mainly concerned about is the chamerops humilis. While its been a champ and saw 15F RAW its first winter, this isnt a normal cold snap. This is a record event in my opinion and it might spell doom for it. Praying it doesnt as its my most prized palm AKA my first in ground palm!

Heres a look at whats setup now.

Inside no tip burn or signs of any cold damage on any of my palms save for the livistona chinensis which is touted as a perennial here so its unavoidable for it to defoliate...20180101_163907.thumb.jpg.5f337b4324771420180101_163920.thumb.jpg.d140a1f57a9aa020171222_151645.thumb.jpg.102c046f5fcd8b

Looks really good that will really help by trapping the heat.

I had a low of 31 last night and theres a slow warming trend starting wednesday so this cold system looks to be moving more east away from us. Warmer day and nights ahead in fact not seeing anything to cold for the next two weeks. Fingers cross.

I wish I had lows of 31f at least then it would be near normal temps for this time of year. Hell not even our highs are at where our average lows are. I sure hope spring comes soon or winter warms back up as normal temps mean no need for a tent. Typically its like 25f briefly at night or higher and day times over freezing at around 35-45f. Average temps mean I dont even need to protect my livistona chinensis (didnt burn til mid teens for me and defoliates if it sees that more than once) from my brief experience with that species. But then again now Im hearing on here that we might be looking at even colder winters ahead....

As for heat well the only artificial heat are the lights and they seem to be enough to keep the ground from freezing at least in the root areas, and when I went inside at 18F outside temps the ground was normal and not frozen.

Well after this week things should be returning back to typical tempatures. Day tempatures are suppose to go back to the 40s.
