It was a Parajubaea tor tor, affectionately called the "800 Pound Gorilla" because of its size and the relative speed with which it grew. Alas, it died from a vascular tissue-blocking rot last year, and we didn't get to removing it till yesterday.

Here is my P. cocoides going down a few years ago, the second photo shows the obstructed vascular tissues in the trunk.  I would still plant this genus, I had 25 years of great appearance and growth !  It was the landmark palm in my front garden.  The dried coconuts were a little joke.  Two old Phillipina ladies insisted that my palm was a coconut!  :D

Wow, everyone in L.A. meditates, even the lumberjacks.

I had no idea that parajubaeas succumbed to this vascular-whatever disease.  Can you provide a close-up photo of the diseased area of the trunk (or crown?) so that others can identify it when it happens to them?

Oh yeah....I forgot --- the tree's gone, so now it's too late for a photo of the infected area, right?

How common is this vascular-whatnot in parajubaea?

Just going to cut if flush with the ground. Then, maybe try the "hot coal treatment"; the wood's spongy enough, and it's hidden from view.

He's not meditating, he's pontificating!

Yeah, certain of the cocoid palms are very very susceptible. I lost a Beccariophoenix madagascarensis no window that was about 10 feet all and as many years old, as well as a Jubaea. :badday:

The key symptom is the lower leaves start to die off too soon, and they're colored wrong. A normally senescing leaf will fade from green to a straw yellow to dark brown color. Where the leaf is cut off from water, it turns more of a grayish or even bluish color. (Test for yourself. Cut off a healthy leaf or two from a few palms, and let them dry out. The difference is quite striking and obvious.) All of a sudden, a nice green crown turns all dead, in a month or two. :crying:

A perfect question!

I have TWO fireplaces, and use both. And burn palm wood in them. And, the link to the recently-doinked thread is above.
