where are the red chucks?

I had two foxy ladies in my old Perth garden that appeared to get the same problem and had to be cut. The internal section of the trunk had shrunken hollows with that same black stuff in your pics. Some sort of fungal root pathogen that gets into the vascular system and just starves the palm of everything from the ground. Real shame to see it happen to your monster gorilla palm Dave.

Been reading all the heavy chemical usage in this thread and others about this genus. My parajubaeas are the easiest growing palms I've got apart from P canariensis. They even sit in cold wet boggy clay all winter and love it. They get frozen and just laugh it off. Never used chemicals. The only things that seems to attack them are hungry grasshoppers which seem to be a plague at the moment. One big difference is I have never recorded a 68F minimum or above since I've lived here for 4 years, and unlike my Perth garden, I can even get Ceroxylon quindiense seedlings to grow in the ground. Most plants that get attacked by everything are just not happy and somehow the pathogens know.

@Tyrone, I think that the climate might be the key. There's a superficial resemblance between habitat and here, but I think they're actually wildly different. Equatorial highlands are very different from temperate lowlands. I've had a few days with over 68 F nights, but not that many. But, maybe that's the problem.

You get Ceroxylon to grow well, that's very telling. They don't like it very much here. San Francisco is much better for them. So, apparently is your place.

The ceroxylon are still young but they're pushing new spears in summer. In Perth they would just up and die in summer and grow ok in winter. Looking forward to them becoming pinnate. Here there is not a huge difference between summer and winter. Probably 8C difference over the entire year. About 16C, 17C max in winter and around 24, 25C in summer. Have only hit 30C about 5 times this growing season.

We're losing a queen to a wilt disease right now.  Of course, thats nothing like losing a Parjubaea tor tor, a plant I'll never see within 2000 miles of here.  So, my sympathies Dave.  I'm, irritated that we're losing the lowly ole Queen palm...I can only imagine the heartache of losing the Gorilla.  FWIW, our property didn't have one palm when we moved here.  We've planted over a hundred and probably have 25-30 species (we've planted many more but lots have died due to the terrible soil).   Even more annoying, the diseases are just awful; we've lost Sabals, Phoenix and Queens.  These are all common plants, but they are also cheap and easy to acquire so they make a great way to transform a place from a weed-filled field into a palm garden.  The rarer things are smaller and take time to grow.  If we lose our Beccariophoenix, I'll freakin scream.

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

Sorry about what happened to your 800 lbs. gorilla, Dave.

Would you say this is one for the books?

Or you going to do an autopsy?

How about an update on your P. tor tor?

Hope it's okay!
