I am a palm person at heart but a few cycads have found places in my yard. On Sat. we were returning from the Palm Beach Spring Sale when we stopped at Riverland Nursery off Rt.  80 in east Ft. Myers. As I was walking past all the usual suspects in the skimpy palm section, I saw 3 large pots of cycads. Between a green Dioon edule with long, straight fronds and a green Dioon spinulosum was a fantastic blue/silver cycad with an enormous caudex. The label on the pot read, "Dioon edule" but this plant's blue leaves were shorter and very twisty compared to its sibling. I didn't do anything then but went home and did some internet research of Dioons. The closest photo I could find on blue Dioon edules was var. "Rio Verde".

Today I went back to Riverland and bought this blue Dioon. We managed to free it from its squat, undersized pot by cutting the thing into pieces. I took photos of my Dioon while it rested in a wheelbarrow awaiting repotting. The caudex is 9" diameter. Late this afternoon my husband helped me wrestle my new cycad into the largest pot I have on the premises.

So, can any cycad experts tell me anything about my find? Is it Dioon edule or maybe one of the other Dioons? I paid over $100 for it. Did I get my money's worth? I'm hoping it will keep its silver blue coloring even during upcoming rainy season.

What do you think?

Caudex = 9" at widest

More photos. The whitish stuff on the leaves appears to have been some kind spray-on by the grower.

Plant is also producing an offset with one leaf so far. I'm leaving it alone for now but is it possible to remove offsets to grow as independent plants? When & how is that done?

Probably a querataro blue. Rio verde dont stay blue but have an amazing colored flush.

Dont remove that pup until it is about 4". Cut straight and seal apply daconil on both. Root out in pumice. Dioon are super easy to root out.

As for getting your money's worth, $100 is a bargain for a 9" querataro blue!
