Spring cleaning....LIVISTONA CHINENSIS LIVES!

So yeah thats a livistona chinensis fresh green spear popping out (and still have a torn green frond left). Proof its a perennial here! Was late to update on this, but growth has been slow all around but then again we had one of the coldest march ever. Oh and ZERO spear pull on livistona!

Chamaerops humilis is looking sad as can be, but still growing on the smaller offshoots. The big trunk that didn't pull still is not doing much off anything. 

 

I just stirred the soil and gave all my palms, yuccas, crepes, magnolia, dog woods and my grandma's plant she gave me that her mom gave her that her mom gave.... and so on a sea kelp shot before I milorganite the entire yard and garden. Hopefully we stay mild from here on out as march wasnt fun... Hoping everything snaps back but time will tell. But this is what happens to these palms in true zone 7 winter temps.

L. Chilensis isnt a suckering palm so that pot had multiples plants growing in it. Once they get some size they will have the same fate as the main trunk.

I know its not, but one came back after winter and others possibly could too. The point was they will never really trunk at this rate, just thought it was cool that it popped back up like a perennial.

When I was a kid my chinensis returned every year in Asheville, NC. Zone 7a. They don’t rot like most palms and you can keep them returning for years by covering the crown in a nice deep pile of mulch.

I sure hope so! The smaller fronds and succors are perfect which is whats confusing me as they are the newest growth.

Thats what I did to mine. Covered the trunks with mulch and watched the fronds die. Was sad but the spears never pulled and one frond kept green a little so I kept it. So not truly 100% defoliated, more like 98% lol. I for sure thought they wouldn't come back after this brutal winter but am pleasantly surprised! Maybe I won't relocate them after all.
