Saw this June 3 flyover video of Leilani Estates by a Black Hawk helicopter posted by sirens999sirens with credit to Kaiali'i K .  (Sen. Kaiali'i Kahele).

No info posted as to what street, but you're seeing brown grasses but still a lot of greenery. You'd think the start of the video with 2 very distinct roof colors would be easy to locate on the map, but even with the 2018 google map I'm looking at with all the trees on the map pre-eruption, still having trouble pinpointing the start. However at 0:23 in, that's definitely on Malama in the southeastern corner of LE. google lists the house address of 13-811 Malama. So this appears to be a flyover of the some of the remaining homes in that quadrant of the subdivsion.

5b15455fdeaa7_flyovermalamaeast-1.jpg.b8

Fissure 8 is visible in the footage below as the chopper makes it's turn from the homes, and from the positioning of Fissure 8 and the other fissures we're still on the eastern side of LE during the flyover in No-Man's land. The flyover does not cover all the of the standing homes on that side.

Towards the end of the video when the image is zoomed out that is the far east end of Malama street. I went back and looked better and they are flying over the houses looking out over the ocean on Malama- same far east end of the street. I recognise that funny looking house at the end of the street. The Blackhawk is basically flying southwest parallel to the road looking west-ish, and at the beginning they are flying directly over Malama in a northeast direction looking down on the houses erched at the edge of the dropoff. Those houses all have/ had ocean views.

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Believe this was part of the same flyover Senator Kaiali'i Kahele took on the Black Hawk helicopter on 6/3 to tour lower Puna. This video that was reposted by sirens999sirens is strictly of Puna Geothermal Venture plant. Since the plant sits higher up ground due to being on the area of an old cone (obvious from the Apple Maps photo below despite being covered now with vegetation) it may survive the eruptions in the area but anything could happen.

Kapoho Beach Lots flyover 4 June morning

Hi all.  I was active on this (old version) forum prior to the economic crash that began in 2007, and resulting (fierce economic survival time) changes in work pulled me completely away from time to participate here.

But you all have remained deeply in my heart, sitting alongside my love of palms that confounds my family and friends.

Thank you for posting this thread, the continual updates..

It took me a while to resurrect my old login, but I have been lurking since the start of this thread, looking right away to see if Bo's palms and home were threatened, if other's properties I remember seeing the beginnings of were threatened....appreciating everyone's updates, so much consolidated information, my heart going out to those in LE, remembering all the old posts and photos of LE.

My family and I travel often to Puna from California, and have been looking for property, considering both Kapoho and LE, with finally a full tropical palm garden in sight.  We've stayed often in Kapoho and VNP area and know it well.   And I have many times walked past the Sullivan garden, and peered through fencing and gates and considered a stay at the new vacation cottages.  Such deep sadness at that immense loss!!!
Today lava overtakes sweet Kapoho Bay, so much love I have for that land and all adjacent lands.

So here's another voice from the cavernous internet, saying I am deeply and sincerely sorry for people's losses.  My overwhelming love for the area now spills over to all of you, hoping for protection, and for peace in the face of loss and threat.

Blessings to you all.

I was going to post the same thing.  This is the bottom of Malama, going in the direction Patrick stated.  I stayed at that blue house in November 2010, when we were here for Thanksgiving, looking at houses.  As I recall, we looked at 8 in Leilani and 1 in Lanipuna Gardens.  Ironically, the 2 we narrowed it down to are both in the Northeast part of Leilani, and probably the only 2 that are currently habitable, whether because of lava or because of gases.  Just dumb luck on our part.

The feet hanging out of the helicopter was too much for me.  I'm a bit acrophobic, and it just pushed all of those buttons.  But it was fascinating watching the lava fill that beautiful bay.  I know this is all perfectly natural but its also so sad.

@Kathy, nice to see you post, despite the circumstances. Not familiar with Periscope, but when I clicked on link it was an after-flight talk. Is there a way to see a replay of the actual flight?

Thanks guys for the info on the streets in Leilani and gee I never knew those homes there along Malama had that kind of view. Wow. Hard to tell when you are just looking at a map like this. The fact that those homes are still here although cut off makes me wonder if the flow never progresses in that area if they will ever become accessible and would you want to be there. I would think the sulfur gases would ruin much in the house anyway.

From everything I've heard in the "after-flight" periscope view the helicopter guys were emphasizing just how massive this lava flow is coming from F8 and into Kapoho. I haven't watched the videos yet from this area, I'll get around to it but I really hate to see such a beautiful coastal paradise area be destroyed.

I pulled up the current google Community Mapping Project of this area and while it's not official probably a pretty good approximation of the lava coverage.

It is stunning this whole mess. 10 years ago i fell in love with the sheer beauty of Leilani and the big island in general. I almost bought a home there as well but it turned out my mom needed a place to live so I built her a guest house instead. Funny how things in life work out, sometimes good, sometimes bad. The rain forest in Leilani is so beautiful that to watch it disappear is shocking.

Maybe you guys watched a few of the videos that Jason Twillman and his brother posted that I and another member links to. Jason has a farm off Hwy 132 around Noni Farms Road. If you did, you probably heard reference to the old large fissure cracks that run on their property. Below is an update video from 6/3, where one of the neighboring ranchers is coming in with a bulldozer across Jason's property in hopes to reach the ranchers cows that are trapped inside his property adjacent to Jason's farm.

He walks back along the cleared bulldozed path which had to start at the beginning of the large fissure above ground in order to get the equipment across the fissure. Jason says he was down inside of it at one point (wish we had that video) but that he thinks it might have been an old lava tube (bigger than Thurston back at HVNP) that skylighted. He takes you to the portion where the fresh lava is now flowing inside it. Kind of hard to see with all the surrounding vegetation but still worth a watch/listen I think. Hopefully like Green Lake it will goggle up volumes of lava that otherwise would be spreading out across the land. So interesting how all this happens. I definitely wouldn't want to be exploring that lava tube when the fresh stuff started to fall down into it. Kind of the stuff horror movies are written around.

I'm not 100% sure, but looking at the photos and videos, I think Kapoho Kai Nursery may currently still be okay - it looks like it (and two other nearby nurseries) are just north of the flow.  Fingers crossed they make it out unscathed.

Sometimes it's interesting to reflect back on things before it all goes so terribly wrong. Here's a YT video in 4K from TheCodeSearcher dotcom published on 5/22 at the end of Kahukai at Leilani that I hadn't seen before...down past the pig house on the hill, down to the end of the street where an eruption had just started. He goes down into the yard on the left and near the fountaining lava that had just started. The land deformation was already very marked and he says in the description and in the comments section that the sounds you are hearing (I thought maybe he was on a skateboard or something) are actually the sounds the magma is making as it's forcing it's way to the new fissure. In the comments section he said in addition to the sound the ground was vibrating up and down, pulsating. I have hear Scott make this comment on a few occasions but of course you can't see it in the videos.

Welcome back to Palmtalk, Kathy, and I must echo your comments. Beautifully said.....

I stayed out at Kapoho tidepools with the family years ago, and it has always been one of my kids’ favorite places we’ve ever stayed. Almost stayed out there again on a family trip this past summer, but instead stayed at a house we had enjoyed by Richardson Beach in Keaau for convenience sake, as there were 8 of us! And then we ran out of time and never even made it down there...cuz it’s a BIG island! :(

If only I had known. Guess we’ve all learned that there’s no guarantee that places we’ve enjoyed and would like to return to, or want to check out later, will always be there waiting for us and if they are, may not remain the same.

Continued concern and sympathy to everyone out there and those with homes/families out there. Can’t imagine what an emotional and physical toll that must take to have such an epic natural disaster that just keeps going...and going...and going...

And another huge thanks to Debbie, Moose, Justin and all the other regular contributors to keeping this thread so very up to the minute.

USGS check in. Here is the USGS Alert report from 6/4 at 8:49am HST (11:49am PDT). https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

Photos page has been updated today: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

The Map has not been updated yet since yesterday at 11am.

----

Mileka's fb page (6/4 @ 9am HST, noon PDT) indicates that Civil Defense has confirmed the total number of houses claimed by lava is now 117 (remember these official numbers only represent permitted structures from what I understand). No breakout how many were in Kapoho. Much more info in her post. Officials caution that a laze plume (hydrochloric acid and glass particles) is blowing onshore, but dissipating quickly.

----

No posts today yet from fb Lava News (Travis Sanders). Hope he is fine and just too busy to post.

----

Ryan Finlay (on fb Hawaii tracker group) posted an hour ago. Similar info on Kapoho. He does mention the lava breakout that is occuring upslope of the Kapoho cone cinder pit, with active flows about 330 years southeast of the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Cinder Road.

Fissure 8 is fountaining at least 250 feet in the air. F9 near Malama can be seen steaming/smoking in one of the most recent web cam images from USGS.

I've noticed folks not being very concerned about the power lines everywhere.  I wonder if they know the power is off?

@Kathy, figured out how to see Bruce Omari's video. On my laptop the link also immediately opened a section to the left side of the video section, which listed the other videos including the flight one. Subsequently figured out that I could have just clicked on Bruce's name button on my phone to bring up the list. Oh well. And @Keith in SoJax, I know what you mean about seeing the feet in the frame. I know the guys had harnesses on but still disorienting. We've only been on one helicopter ride and that was out of Hilo down to Pu'uO'o vent and the coast back in the 90s. Pu'uO'o had a lava lake in it and there was lava flowing into the ocean at the cliff edge. Don't recall fresh lava on top of the surface but did see skylights. An sight you don't forget. Flight down was fine and an interesting feeling being lifted straight up and forward but on the way back nearing Hilo we encounted winds we had to head into and the ride was very jerky. One of the ladies in our copter got sick (thank you for the bags provided ahead of time) and I know I felt pretty green before touching the ground. Hats off to everyone that flies helicopters in the military/gov't, for business or recreational purposes or police or traffic. Really appreciate everyone doing these flyovers for tracking the lava. It does give the most unique perspective, second only to drones now a days--but loses the personal experience of flying  throught the air so there is that trade off. Just think how much more dangerous this situation would be and likely lives would be lost if we didn't have the means to use both of these machines down there now.

I found these views from the video very intriguing. The craters formed on top of the large cone (Green Mountain?) looked like a face to me (actually a skeleton face came to mind) and I was  still in awe of F8 there in the background.

Scott's (YT ApauHawaiiTours) new video from 7:42am HST (10:42am PDT) today. Video starts at Kuhukai and Makamae where the break out from the lava river berm destroyed the remaining home on that corner (ie Bill's). Scott then moves down to F8, still going strong and sending tephra into the air. I believe I read that it might be as high as 250ft today at times. First perspective is from the northside of F8, then moves on to the southside of F8. From this position he sees lava running down the cone. Next view is on the East/southeast side of F8. Windy day! Especially without any trees to soften the wind. :( I can see why lava field Kalapana Estates now is known for being so windy. I'm not a fan of the watermark for viewing the video but understand why Scott felt he had to go that route.

It is quite windy today, great for doing yardwork.  #1, the air is clean, #2 the mosquitoes don't really come out, as they get blown around.  It's also good for wicking the sweat.  I've been moving rocks and making paths through the garden all day.  Aside from the constant and incessant helicopter noise, it's a pretty normal day here.

For anyone wondering about Green Lake thought I would post 2 videos, the first one was published by verbena100 back in Aug 2008 and the lake is very green and pristine. Can see how it got it's name.

This second one published by keysha neves in Aug 2013 is a climb up Green Mountain, views from it and then down to the lake, set to music. Not as pristine any more. I was surprised there was a paddle boat there. Has anyone here been there in the recent past? Rumor has it Jacques Cousteau took one of his mini subs down in it and couldn't locate the bottom. As we know, the lava intrusion boiled off all the water in it the other night and it's been filling with lava flow so no more. The video description said this was the only one crater-lake in Hawaii. Another special place just a memory.

OK and for something totally different and to take your minds off all the destruction, thought I'd throw in the local 2016 award winning film festival movie entry that was called "Green Lake", and Green Lake was the setting for this horror film. Think Creature from the Black Lagoon but island-style. You can read about it here on the director/producer's website and watch the trailer. https://damontucker.com/2016/05/19/puna-film-green-lake-selected-for-big-island-film-festival/comment-page-1/

Creature was among my favorite old-time monster movies and in fact was part of last year's halloween theme (monster movie drivein), so this take off caught my attention. If you are a B-horror/monster movie fan, you can watch the full movie here:

and now back to more news of the day...

The smoke/steam definitely changed this afternoon, but I'm not sure the meaning or the reason.  It changed from the smoky brown to a bright white around 2pm local time today.  I drove on Pomaikai to see if I could spot anything obvious, but I couldn't make out anything.

Just stumbled upon this video made by Smiley Burrows to the Ms. Cousteau and the Cousteau Society regarding information they might have still about the depth of Green Lake. Don't know if Smiley ever got a reply but think we would have heard about it somewhere on the internet. Nice footage from the area.

Smiley BTW was the person who gave Travis Sanders a place to do his live feed from on Green Mountain when the lava was heading that way and all the power was out to the area.

I saw that there was a new video conference posted by Civil Defense on Big Island Video News. Talmadge Magno gives the update and takes questions on numbers of homes, number of people isolated in the area. Answers question on are there plans to go in and get these people out that are still there. Questions on laze. The video flyovers are pretty easy to see what's on the ground. Discusson on shelters and next phase. Chain of Craters update. Fire department rescue of the woman. Question on boat rescues.

I can still see the glow of fissure 8 from my house tonight. Looks similar to how it's looked the last several nights.

Such a sad day today seeing all the loss in Kapoho, on top of everything already destroyed.

On a side note, my wife and I run an AirBnB out of our house here. We had some guests from Beijing check in tonight and the first two things they asked me were "what time does the volcano park open tomorrow morning" and "where can we go to see the lava".

I was very surprised at the national park question because it seems like it's well known it's been closed for almost a month.

There's been a lot of reports about the financial impact this is taking on the island due to loss of tourism. I wasn't expecting people to come in the middle of that to see the national park.

And I should add this was a very last minute booking, made just this past week. I have a feeling these are not the only people showing up here not realizing the park is closed.
