Mileka had this report on her fb page about the evacuees that have been coming into the Info Supply Hub since the flow has traveled into new areas. I think there are a lot of people in Kathy Emery's situation and after helping them with current basic needs wonder what their next step will be and where they will go. So many people within such a short time to have planned for and have to wonder if disaster planning accounted for so many.

Jenni 'Gabrielle' McInnes, an Australian teacher, compiled a slide presentation of the progression of the flow to use in her class. Nicely done and continually being updated. Thought people might want to take a look at it: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1QII7ghtP1nmVYkeg5Ge0AsJ5REL1zUofpJjRiW1bwkc/edit#slide=id.p

Ryan Finlay made a post this morning, 6/5 @ 6:15am HST (9:15am PDT) on fb Hawaii Tracker Group with photos from Kapoho. Given the location of Kapoho Crater which is visible in some of the photos, it looks like some homes are still visible but honestly doesn't look like many, and mostly to the north of the Bay. We'll really need higher resolution photos to get a better feel. The plumes of smoke are drifting southwards and I really couldn't make out imagery from Vacationland area.

Waiting for updated aerials from Mick Kalber.

Google Community Mapping Project hasn't been updated since yesterday at 3:30pm so waiting on that.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has not updated photos in their Flickr account since June 1. I thought they were extremely helpful and hope they haven't abandoned doing so.

From USGS website:

Current Alerts were last updated as of yesterday @ 10:21pm HST (1:21am PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html  As has been observed by members in Leilani estates the fountaining from F8 has reduced. USGS estimates 130-160 ft. maximum. Lava at Kapoho Bay had extended out 750 yards from shore. Lava breakout north side of Kapoho cinder pits had stalled, but the breakout southward has encircled Green Lake cone.

Sluggish flows at F18 and some spattering was observed at F6/13 otherwise other fissures were inactive.

No mention was made about steaming/smoking from F9, which we've seen a few accounts of including from members here.

Earthquake activity at the Summit has slowly increased after Sunday's small eruptions and approaching levels before the eruption.

Scott's video from 5am HST (8am PDT) initially standing viewing F8 on the north side, around Nohea and Leilani. Hey, he learned how to splice together his shorter videos. From F8 you can see the actual river on top of the flow given the darkness of the early morning at this hour. F8 is pretty quiet. Next scene @ 5:41am, different view of F8, on Luana looking straight ahead at F8. Love the early morning colors, very kind of misty looking. F8 looking like it's waking up more in this shot. Next scene is from tephra-covered Kupono looking at Leilani and the lava flow blocking the roadway. Next scene is on Moku on a hill looking down towards Leilani. This is just up from the Palm house and the sulfur cone house that was obliterated next door. Brief look down the street concluding with a rainbow eucalyptus tree he sees on the way back home. If you've never seen their trunks before they are very unique.

Not posted yet as a video to their YT channel, but here's the report from Civil Defense about the 5.5 earthquake that occured this morning at the Summit at 4:32am HST (7:32am PDT). As for Kapoho Bay area USGS made this statement: "The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s 6:30 a.m. HST overflight “confirmed that lava completely fills Kapoho Bay, extending 0.7 miles from the former coastline,” scientists reported this morning. “To the south, lava is entering the water at the Vacationland tidepools, having inundated most of that subdivision. To the north, lava has covered all but the northern part of Kapoho Beach Lots.” more info included about the lava movement overnight.

The armory shelter at Kea'au has reached capacity. The Pahoa shelter is still open.

This Big Island Video News report also shows the map and discusses prepping for alternate routes around cracks near Hwy 130 area. I had heard they had been working on this, maybe from Ikaika's Friday talk, but this is the first printed info I'm seeing and showing a map. Looks like they are working to provide access to the Ala'ili Road communities area which had no back way out.

Community Meeting this evening, Tues, 5/5 @ 5pm HST at Pahoa High School cafeteria. See the article for additional meetings in the area on vog and volcanic ash hazards. Also included is info on the Puna insurance claims forum meeting this Thurs., 6/7.

I kind of hated to check in this morning if you know what I mean. So much beauty and life wiped out. Thankfully no lives that we know about although I had heard about a suicide at a shelter. Some of the sheltered people have been there for more than a month now and with no prospects of a home/land to return to. Aside from the essentials people need a purpose doing something and I hope that component is a major focus for these people awaiting some type of more semi-permanent housing solution. Theft and drugs within the shelter community another issue.

New development in Leilani Estates. Fissure 24 has lava coming out of it. Click on the photo in this fb link from Ryan Finlay (Hawaii Tracker group) and use the right arrow to scroll through the other photos from Leilani (4 photos total). I added the map below and as you can see Fissure 24 is located between F9 (with the increased steaming that's been on everyone's radar) and F8. Not good news. I don't know but wonder if like F9 it's located outside of the very high lava bed/river area and is more street level among homes previously untouched. Hard to tell the old lava's flow elevation just by looking at the aerial photos. Also not good to see F24 is backing up rift and moving closer to F9 although it's something that they thought could occur. This was happening and visible by chopper at 6am when Scott was over by Luana Street looking at F8 I believe. In fact he was on both Kupono and Nohea looking down the road, and apparently, guessing here because of trees still standing in that area, he didn't detect this renewed action. On the photo that has been anonotated with the Fissure number and street names, that's Malama at the top of the residential area and if you look to the right of Moku and Malama you'll see a house smoking to the right. That's the house at the corner of Pomaikai and Malama that has been shown in photos and video with severe cracking (Ikaika was down there at the request of the owner wanting to know what was going on below that the yard had suddenly had such severe widening cracks). It subsequently was engulfed in photos and video with steam/gases. There is an old lava eruption there on their property next to the house/storage area but this area was never given a fissure number.

KHON2 is reporting Gov. Ige has signed emergency proclamations to cover adding housing and for law-enforcement provisions. This comes on the heels of more than 500 homes being destroyed overnight by lava. As for the law enforcement portion it sets criminal penalties for:

•Interfering with emergency personnel
•Failing to comply with reasonable directions of emergency personnel
•Failing to evacuate
•Violating curfew

This also includes prohibiting drones from operated in the incident area.

From Hawaii News Now, video showing continued fissure activity in Leilani Estates last night. Doesn't say where but looks like advancing 'a'a flow on a street.

I suspect the homeowner marked the roofs so they could easily ID their buildings when aerial photos are taken.

May make making an insurance claim easier if the worse happens. Using before and after photos as documentation..

Don't think the insurance adjustors will be flocking in any time soon. Only thing that makes sense to me.

OMG you're right, and I posted the video link and didn't recognize him. Maybe because it was a side view and a few years have gone by. But yeah that's him. Only the woman ID herself and because she was from LE decided to post this video article. I knew that Axel had a B&B or two and farm so totally makes sense he would be there speaking. BTW I did notice his name on a fb comment he made in a fb post I highlighted a few days ago and mentioned it here so this makes second time he's kind of back on here. I definitely can see him housing some people on his farm.

Don't know the specifics of this Bill 108 but B&Bs have been a blessing for many but as seen in many mainland cities have been the source of housing issues for local residents who find less housing stock available for year-round leases and also competion for established hotels that are permanent businesses in the communities and provide many service jobs for the locals. Right now the Big Island will need to house all these evacuees who for the most part are really homeless and still attract tourists to stimulate the economy and bring in outside dollars. Both competing in some cases for the same housing in the case of vacation rentals. Maybe they will establish some emergency-period language for the Bill.

Hey, this was kind of cool and a bit of good news for those along Noni Farms Road. Revisiting the area there with Jason Twillman (several of his video posts have been linked here already). This drone video was posted this morning from TheCodesearcher dotcom (Jason's brother) of that giant crack (old open fissure/lava tube on their property) that they had hoped would gobble up some of the lava flow. Well it did! Interesting video from it and Jason Twillman was right, that crack appears really wide at that one point. BTW at 6min in you can still see F8 fountaining way back in Leilani Estates.

at about 6:29 in you see these 3 spots of fresh lava, not sure if these are fissures or outbreaks on a lava river or exactly where these would be. These are not from Leilani which is to the right a distance of them. Still watching the video so will update.

5b1815809c8cc_fissuresinbackground-1.jpg

Turns out it's an outbreak from the lava river re-flowing onto to some previously layed lava. With these outbreaks you never can tell where they'll happen and go next.

5b18158ee6d43_outbreakfromriver-1(2).jpg

View above from 9:39 min in. And another view back towards Leilani.

5b1816cebdb92_F8again-1.jpg.3061a26e1a40

When you have extensive farmland like this I can see where drones can come in very handy to monitor where lava is on your property or how far away it is in relationship to exit routes.

BTW the video is just over 35 min. but offers some very interesting views of the lava and worth checking out.

One more view from Jason's property. In the screen grab (15 min. in) at the bottom of the image you see the lava filled-in "trench" or skylighted tube and if you follow your eyes directly up from it to the horizon, you'll see F8 in Leilani. Straight path down the rift zone that Kilauea has used many years ago.

Their homes btw are just to the right of this open tube and off camera below the view. I sure hope all these guys get to keep their homes and the flow doesn't claim them. Chances are the lava that has filled it will inflate but hopefully not breakout to their side. People need some wins here against the lava.

At about 21:25 in, the drone moves from Jason's property and starts to show the lava river heading towards Kapoho. Since night views are included after this I'm thinking this footage was from last night.

Last night my husband and I watched together the "Green Lake" short movie video I linked to previously and am sure the house the kids are staying in was one of the tide pool properties that was lost. Maybe someone here actually knows where it was. We were admiring how beautiful all the palms were there and what a tropical paradise it was. BTW the short film was directed and produced by Derek Frey from Tim Burton Productions. He and Burton have been working on films together since 2001.

I'm struck by how good the Hawaiian authorities are when they are speaking to the citizens.  They obviously really care, they calm instead of inflame the situation.  They'd make good role models for elected officials here on the mainland.

Yes, it appears to me that it's a very tight knit community too. Maybe it's the nature of the islands, aloha spirit, or maybe more so something on the Big Island (not so city-ifed) but I noticed from a number of public meetings that were on videos that I've watched recently the same thing as you were saying Keith.

A take-away from the USGS portion of the Community Meeting (video posted a few posts back in thread): "the eruption rate of F8 is on the order of 15 to 25 times the eruption rate over the 35 years of Pu'uO'o. So if you think there's a lot more lava coming out of the vent now you're absolutely right".

Steve Brantley, USGS HVO, talks about seeps or outbreaks from the lava levees and monitoring them. Talks about Hwy 130 and the existing cracks and says that things are holding there but it could take only a few hours for it to change and it's one of the things they are trying to keep an eye on.

The photos of changes in the Halema'uma'u crater are pretty dramatic. Images taken from yesterday afternoon. He points out how close to the edge now the parking lot is and says that the overlook is now gone, having fallen into the crater. The floor has dropped and new features have emerged. Over 3,000 earthquakes occured in the Summit area in the past week.

----

BTW if you watched the KHON2 coverage of last night's Community meeting where Howard Dashefsky says that Mayor Kim's vacation home was spared, it was later confirmed to the Mayor that it hadn't been and this was reported in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (linked to a number of posts earlier). The HS-A ran this updated story this morning. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/06/06/hawaii-news/hawaii-county-mayor-harry-kim-loses-home-to-lava/

Honolulu Star-Advertiser did this story today on Honolulu newlywed couple, Rebecca McCarthy and Timothy Jeffryes, who were looking forward to living out their lives in Leilani Estates where Timothy had bought a home on Hookupu Street back in 2003. They had planned to leave Oahu and into the house in July. Their house ended up being located  right next to F7.

The article isn't so much about the loss of the home but the attitude of people they have encountered, typical of which I've seen plenty of on the internet, but also about the people they met in Leilani Estates. Those of you who have remained may have met them as they walked the same eruption zone areas before the mandatory evacuation went down.

Very interesting read although not with a happy ending in LE. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/06/06/hawaii-news/kilauea-dashes-oahu-newlyweds-dreams/

Haven't pulled up the google Community Mapping Project recently. Here it is for Kapoho showing the estimated flow for 6/6.

Scott said he was going to be up in Hilo today and would share some videos from that area which he just posted this afternoon. If you want to listen to his early morning talk here's the link. Below are the 2 videos from Hilo (Richardson Beach Park) and Rainbow Falls (which we didn't get to see as we were anxious to get up to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden at Onomea Bay north of there--totally worth the trip btw). I know, not related to the lava and fissures, but figured we could all use a nice change of pace so decided to post them and as a reminder of some of the great places people can still visit.

Wow, that's beautiful!

Interview outside of Kapoho Bay on the ocean this morning with Mileka Lincoln interviewing Ikaika Marzo and his thoughts on the area going forward (as seen on her fb page). Interesting comment he made about F8, that it seems to have spread out in width and from what he can tell still pumping out as much lava while maybe not as high all the time.

For those wondering about Merlin the dog that was waiting for someone to rescue him down by the Pohoiki Boat Ramp, Mileka had this post on her fb page:

and then within the last hour I saw this way down in the comments about Merlin's owner being located and going to get him.

Updates from USGS Wed 6/6, latest Alert was from Tues night at 10:28pm HST still saying flow is vigorous from F8.

The Map has been updated as of Noon today. Click map below for a larger image.

Map from US Geological Survey:

In the photo section they have added a few interesting items including a radar image showing the fissures and flow from F8. Two videos have been added. One of Halema'uma'u's crater growth and the other of an active lava channel with UAS hovering overhead to determine flow rate. A few more photos of the lava rivers.

Not sure if there are just a lot of people trying to view right now but both videos (well worth watching!) are playing very jerky right now. Not sure if it's a buffering issue or what. Both very cool and man the video of the crater really shows how much additional rim has slipped or fallen below.
