USGS updates:

Alert issued Sun., 6/10 @ 4:01pm HST (7:01pm PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

"Fissure 8 now consists of three closely-spaced lava fountains, the tallest of which reached heights of 130-180 feet, feeding a strong channel to the northeast and then east to the ocean entry. During the day, minor spillovers have dribbled over the Fissure 8 channel levees but have generally stalled before reaching ground not covered by previous lava flows. Yesterday's measurements show that gas emissions from the fissure system have nearly doubled, possibly indicating an increase in eruption rate from Fissure 8."

Photos posted as of today, including a photo of the a morning overflow that went down the levee walls. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

Map was updated as of Noon HST today. Shows small breakout on Kahukai to the east of Luana as well as in Kapoho and northern lobe around Noni Farms Road. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_maps.html

This is not new, but from 5/24, "when lava wider than a football field" took out homes along Kaupili. This was filmed by eppixadventures.com at the request of one of the neighbors. I've seen some of this lava action when it happened before but not this particular video. And I know that house with the wide archways (2:39) was where Ikaika was standing in front of talking to one of the news reporters when lava first erupted in Leilani Estates down on Mohela. The eruption was shooting up in the street behind this house (and think this was where Bo was taking photos when capture by news cameras).

Not sure who the videographer is but nice 4K footage and his work deserves more views. You can check out his other videos on his YT page ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa4m_cqUrIkJtBxF3xIcV7g/videos ). He does a lot of close up footage of volcanic activity.

These are two favorites of mine. Fissure 6 reportedly viewed from 40 feet away (only 34 views!):

The coloring of the night sky on May 24 is very nice against the lava fountaining here (only 45 views!) :

A good summary of how Hawaii volcanoes work from Oregon State University.  That broad stream of lava is losing a lot of heat.

Thanks Gonzer! It's not over yet...  These photos were taken Friday evening. Though the eruption is about 3/4 of a mile away, it lights up the sky for miles.

The first 3 photos are taken in my garden. The last is from the community center across the street, about 400 ft. closer to the eruption.

Just listened to Scott's morning talk. He said indicated that he won't be doing any videos today from LE  (I'd say not a given knowing him) because he is going with friends to Mauna Kea to watch the sunrise. I know people who went to Mauna Loa could see Fissure 8 but don't know if anyone has been on Mauna Kea and commented or shared photos/video from there. Here's a link to his YT video page if you want to check on his video status: https://www.youtube.com/user/ApauHawaiiTours/videos

Someone asked Mileka Lincoln (Hawaii News Now) on her fb page if she had an update on Puna Geothermal Venture's site and Extreme Exposure Fine Art Gallery posted this photo as of Sunday morning, 5:45am HST during a Paradise Helicopters' overflight. The perched channel of lava was overflowing there at the time and going towards PGV. Very interesting as I recalled posting a screen grab from the PGcam on Sunday morning and commenting that I was seeing a lava river where I hadn't seen one before down by the plant.

^ click on "View on Facebook" if it's not appearing for you.  Here's the image I posted 45 minutes after the overflight view above where I saw the lava in the lower right corner.

Ryan Finlay shared this post about Fissure 8 from Sunday evening at 7pm HST which showed the 3 distinct fountains of Fissure 8, which you may have noticed watching Scott's videos recently. However, Ryan indicates in one photo you can see where lava was being diverted SW towards Makamae and Malama Streets. Click on Ryan Finlay's post to bring you to fb and to Arrow through the photos there. USGS hasn't updated their Noon map on Sunday to reflect an overflow that evening in this area yet. I am curious to see if it cross the lava boundary or just stayed on the older lava bed.

Ryan also shared a post with some 25 photos from fb AlohaSkiesAviation of Fissure 8 (Sun 6/10, 5:30am HST) and surrounding Leilani Estates as well. Some good street views people may want to check out. There's a few photos with the Community Center in it so you can get a good idea of where you are looking at. Pretty sure the images of the smoking lava towards the Malama side of F8 is where the breakout in LE was happening (that would be the SW corner of F8). As for the lava river, clearly there are a number of small breakouts that had escaped the banks of the river but so far haven't gotten away too far. You can see the lighter gray (slightly older) breakouts as well. Looking at the various photos I think we are starting to see a more pronounced browning of vegetation spreading westward from the flow. Kim's yard still look a nice lush green. You can almost see the effect or dividing line in the images of the Community Center's large lot unless that was the result of something else, like watering or different grass.

There's a good relatively close up photo of the lava breakout at PGV. Thinking the USGS PGcam must be mounted somewhere on one of the two older cones to give the view it did over some trees of the Sunday morning lava flow there.

^ click to view on Facebook and arrow through the photos.

BTW I see that Aloha Skies Aviation has just updated their album to include 38 photos. The addition appears to be photos from Kapoha area but I'm seeing additional ones of LE including a really good shot of F8 and that SW breakoff from directly overhead.

I think typically people think of taking helicopter rides over the island but if your stomach doesn't like the feeling of the lift upward and sometimes jerky action of the helicopter if it has to fly into the wind, then a sightseeing plane like Aloha Skies Aviation would be the next best way to go. Flies out of Hilo airport. Their fb photo section shows other island places they have shared photos from.

No, you can’t feel any heat at all. You would have to be right next to the lava to feel the heat, and I have no plans to get that close!!  I have been close to lava before, but it was a slow, oozing flow, not a raging river coming from a 200-ft. fountain; entirely different and far less dangerous than the current eruption.

Here's a photo showing Kim taking the photo of her Clinostigma samoense that she posted several posts above this one. And also a photo of Kim's largest Tahina spectabilis. It's interesting to see how the air quality affects different plants (and palms) in different ways. Many of the Dypsis seem to be completely unfazed and that goes for the Tahina as well. Dictyocaryum lamarckianum on the other hand are definitely suffering with some of the fronds clearly discolored.

The sky reminds me of the color of tomato juice. Just so unreal and kind of a sick look. I do prefer nice blue skies with clean white puffy clouds (not steam clouds).

From some of the photos I've seen of the lava channels it looks they they might be graying over or hardening. Wondering if that would be the start of lava tubes forming.

A day or two ago I posted a link to a second google Community Mapping Project that instead of tracking the fissures and flow of lava, focused on the Addresses of Homes Destroyed in the eruption.

5b1ecf46df8e7_googlemaphomeloss-1.jpg.7d

I spent a little bit clicking on the various homes marked (the parcel grid as mentioned does lay a bit higher than it should on the actual map location--very noticeable when it doesn't line up with the west-east streets). Most of the homes when accessing the link to the County's Property Tax Office records, still show the homes without any notation of loss due to lava. However I did find that some homes like the one below have been updated. Not sure how this procedure is begun (automatic by County or needs to be applied for by homeowner?). See the area under Dept of Public Works Bldg Division Permit and Inspections Information. Looks like a "permit" is issued to affect this change. This map should help people find out if the County has processed their structure loss yet.

Hawaii County Civil Defense posted photos/videos from Sunday, 6/10. As mentioned the lava river is looking gray, although lava is still pumping out of Fissure 8. First photo below looks taken near Leilani with PGV to the right of the tree-covered cone at top center. Flow divides at that juncture with the right path going by Fissure 17 and the Civil Beat House and the left going past Noni Farms Road and down to Kapoho and the ocean. Second photo below is near Kapoho Crater and Green Lake.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald had this preliminary story on Mayor Kim's account that as many as 600 to 700 homes may have been lost. There is also concern that with activity at Halema'uma'u residents of Volcano might find themselves displaced as well. Mayor Kim's meeting with FEMA is scheduled for later this afternoon. Bob Fenton (FEMA) admitted that FEMA's programs aren't meant for this kind of situation and that "other federal agencies would have to be brought in to help those displaced by lava". In the meantime F8 is still going strong.

Kim, I would be nervous sleeping that close to this too.

At the end of this Tim mentions coming back with his own video footage after surviving from a drone attack. No idea what that means.

It's amazing how wide that river of lava is, and that it's riding on an elevated berm of old / dried lava.  Just wow!!!

Back on May 27 in the late evening, you guys might remember a live video feed posted by Travis Sanders (fb LavaNews) at Shane's house/warehouse off Pohoiki Road from when the lava overtook that property after advancing rapidly the nights before down Kaupili. Travis and friends had been evacuating the belongings to help Shane. Well I found a video interview today by ThirdPhaseofMoon with Travis the day after the place was overrun by lava. Interesting to watch, better quality footage than the live feed, and nice to see Travis on this side of the camera. I hold Travis in the highest regard for all the help he has given to residents needing to evacuate or move. Calm manner, level headed, great communicator. I can see him working in emergency services hands down. In fact think he would be a great leader in that field of work.

Another video shot by ThirdPhaseofMoon. This video was filmed early on (5/19) inside Leilani Estates as they get access through Buzzie, a Leilani Estates resident. Another resident is interviewed. As you noticed in the video above, ThirdPhaseofMoon likes to add dramatic music in the background. I'm finding  them fun to watch and informative so am sharing a few more here. For their other Kilauea lava eruption videos here's there video list: https://www.youtube.com/user/thirdphaseofmoon/videos

More time inside Leilani. You'll notice they were some of the early drone flyers.

And now down at lower Kahulai. This one features Jonathan Wright's video while they interview him about what was going on while Jonathan was filming. Worth another view even if you saw Jonathan's video already. Also includes video of Puna Geothermal Venture shot by Peter from Leilani Estates, who is also interviewed for the piece.

This video was filmed when they were investigating the 'a'a lava advancing on Jason Twillman's Noni Farm Road property. You'll recognize Jason and his brother Jonathan there too. Trees falling, huge 'a'a flow moving across the land and into the open old lava tube trench. Pretty amazing footage.

The ThirdPhaseofMoon guys (Blake and Brent Cousins) really have some great footage within Leilani. They don't date their video footage or say where they are so it does make it hard to really follow. But beautiful video quality. And these guys climb over things Scott doesn't. Watching this video posted 6/7 where they are observing a fissure reopening and the area is a large sulfur bed (starts about 11:15 in). Wish I knew where this was. They do show a mailbox and gate in the area but not sure the street. Anyway I'll share another video because it is really dramatic to watch and kind of hooks you in. I'm not into the UFO videos they post so won't subscribe but the Kilauea footage is very good.

About 25 min in, this video is a repeat of the Kahukai footage they did with Jonathan and that followed by repeat of footage when they went to Noni Farm Road.

BTW if you are watching the video, F7 which is mentioned is at Leilani Ave and Makemae St. And in another video which sounds like a live feed that was showcasing some of this footage at the re-eruption area with the sulfur beds, Brent mentions that one of the news reporters fell into a crack up to his waist, so the ground there was very treacherous.

BigIslandNow's Malika Dudley interviewed Mayor Kim this morning. Video and article here: http://bigislandnow.com/2018/06/11/exclusive-interview-with-mayor-kim/

He discusses the overlay process of mapping out the homes to pick up the unpermitted homes as some of them have insurance and this will help them get their claims processed. He talks about buying back some of the land in exchange for a new lot somewhere. One of the ways the government may be able to help with a program. If you are affected by the eruption, you probably want to give a listen to the video as the article doesn't cover some of this.

----

Here is the Civil Defense press briefing today with FEMA and other officials (Mon 6/11 @ 3pm HST). If you have been impacted, you'll want to listen to this briefing.

https://www.facebook.com/BigIslandNow/videos/1683463828397826/?hc_location=ufi

Here is the program mentioned for individuals:

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2017/10/12/2017-22032/notice-of-maximum-amount-of-assistance-under-the-individuals-and-households-program

To get a good feel for what FEMA's individual and household assistance program in this situation is listen particularly to the Q&A at about 13 min in. FEMA said this program hasn't been "turned on yet" and typically the national average has been $4K-34K and not indexed to cost of living regionally. It's looked at on an individual basis. The reporter asks for more details on determining who qualifies and how the amount is arrived at and how renters and vacation home owners are viewed under this so lots of details and much is still to be worked out.

Morning update :interesting:

PGV cam as of a few minutes ago (Tues 6/12 @ 4:35am HST; 7:35am PDT):

5b1fdaf82a805_pgvcam-1(1).jpg.3ffd77301d

Scott posted a video of F8 and the lava flow from 6pm last night. He starts off on Nohea and Leilani and watching the very rapidly flowing river. Next stop is Luana side of F8. Tephra is more visible in the air on this side and the cone has built up more since yesterday. Next stop is Hookupu near dusk. F8 is gorgeous and the river is visible.

and has posted his very early morning chat for today. It's raining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhy1qUjEvlk  During this morning's talk you'll hear how last night when he was in the no go zone, apparently with some other reporters who were in there filming, he was approached by the police and given a stern warning so he said it might be his last video from inside there. He's going to see today if he can negotiate I guess something with officials to give him a special pass to continue checking on homes and giving video updates. Hmm.

At the end of the morning chat (14 min. in) he mentions that the police indicated to him that if people want to get a check on their property to give the police a call and if they can get to their property they will do so for residents. Scott said the PD can go from Kuhakai all the way down Nohea, Kupono, and Moku up to where the fissures are. Scott said they won't go into the Malama side of the fissure zone however of the no-go area which would be the SE corner of Leilani, but if given permission he, Scott, would do that for them. All depends on if he is able to get some special pass to do so. Given he's a HVNP tour guide and a resident of LE maybe they will do that but hard to say. Wanted to give you guys the update on this in case you don't listen to his morning chats and missed this one and were wondering what happened to his videos.

Honolulu Star-Advertiser ran a story today of a Kapoho property owner who was helped thanks to Paradise Helicopters and pilot Rob Mitchell to retrieve some of her belongings before her house was lost to the lava. The article illustrates how dangerous conditions were on the ground at that time. Interesting read. I also found a short video of Cosette's home and her in her home retrieving things in this brief news update that Honolulu Star-Advertiser does routinely as part of their Digitial Billboard.

Well this is an interesting item in today's morning news. There is consideration being given to opening up "viewing areas" where tourists can watch the dramatic fissure action. Since the only thing really to watch right now is Fissure 8 I have to wonder other than inside Leilani Estates where that would be and how that would sit with existing homeowner/residents there. I know the County and Civil Defense have been hard pressed on closing off areas to this area from a safety standpoint. I also know from listening to the County budget meetings, Mayor Kim's discussions/presentations and what transpired at yesterday's FEMA meeting that Puna and the Big Island and even the State are faced with what looks like at the moment to be unending expenditures related to this eruption.

If you listened to Scott's Mauna Kea morning video from yesterday, you know how cold it was there. Saw this today from a Cleveland, Ohio news article about how there's a winter weather advisory at Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa while Kilauea erupts. All I can say is I think cold weather sections of the country do take some pleasure when those of us living in warmer areas share in some of the cold weather blasts. I know my parents would tell me they didn't want to hear how I'd be in sandals while they were bundled up in winter coats. Still can't get my mom to give up winters back east for ones here in California though.
