Morning. :interesting: Was at the drive thru at Starbucks and heard there was a 5.5 I think earthquake at Kilauea just now, but went to the USGS site and not seeing anything. Maybe the news got delayed crossing the ocean and this was from yesterday?? :floor:

Anyway, here's the morning cam from PGV and things are burning bright. The lava river that looked gray yesterday in photos seems to be hot and glowing so not sure about my theory it was hardening over.

There was a USGS Alert issued last night at 11:04pm HST (2:04am PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html  Only updated info to report.

Well KHON2 just reported the 5.4 earthquake at the Summit. They've observed the pattern of small quakes leading up a larger one and then resetting and have been able to say within a few hours of when the next larger one will occur.

If you watched Ikaika's video of taking supplies to the tents in the Red Cross Shelter area, you saw the tent city that has developed there. This Honolulu Star-Advertiser story is of one Leilani Estates resident, Dora Kamekona Wheatley, and family who was an early tent person and how conditions have changed as more evacuees have no where else to go.

Leilani resident April Buxton started a community kitchen and pantry in the parking lot after she was evacuated. She too has seen the change.

Scott has continued with his early morning chat. He said he didn't pursue anything yet and will be taking the day off doing things he needs to do. Sky's not looking that bright this morning. He mentions meeting a few other explorers in the no-zone area, including Gabe, (YT H.I.S Survival) who I've only recently posted some of his videos for you. If you want to listen to his chat, it's here:

Watched this nicely compiled video by a young videographer giving a tour of Kapoho where his grandparents had a house he enjoyed spending time at. In his description he mentions that they were one of the few local families that lived in Vacationland; and he goes on to say that unfortunately they didn't have insurance.

Nice to see a young person's viewpoint of this loss. I'm sure he'll never forget his time there. Here's YT's Gaming with JJ's video:

There's always the kid in us missing favorite places in the same way. And here we see some of the pleasures of the area through his eyes. His family has lived in Kapoho for several generations. He points out the house his greatgrandmother was born in that was ultimately taken by the 1960 eruption. If you like his video, give it a thumbs up.

Last night Ikaika's talk at the Info Supply Hub and with the maps, unfortunately experienced some live feed connection problems and they couldn't link to Philip Ong to include his talk on Kilauea and the changes to the Summit. During Q&A he discusses the multiple chambers below Haleam'uma'u. He talks about the size of the crater reflects the size of the magma chamber underneath. Philip did his own separate talk as a result and here it is:

I'm not sure who YT bc d is but their live feed video was posted back on May 6 when the lava fissure was erupting and flowing down Leilani Ave. That's Travis Sanders (fb LavaNews) on the roof of a house right next to it filming it live. I can't believe it's only been viewed some 886 times with 9 likes and 3 dislikes, 42 subscribers. Maybe it was the shock of what was happening and grief being experienced over what was was no longer. Travis who was filming was emotionally affected by what he was seeing happen to this neighborhood too. This is pretty unimaginable yet it happened. Worth seeing if not for the immense power of the volcano but how quickly things changed in the early days at Leilani.

and apparently more from the live feed that was shared on YT and FB.

I've seen early footage from someone's backyard but not an overhead view like this. Being there filming at this location was incredibly dangerous as you can see from tephra flying. We know what happened to Mr. Clinton at the house by F17, and this fissure area honestly looks much more fierce to me.

And saw this fb post about it,

BTW on fb Hawaii Tracker group, someone posted a comparison photo of LE and the houses at F8 and what we see today and expressed how they just can't wrap their mind around the two images. Here's the conversation that this image brought out. Everyone has been wondering about it no doubt and thankfully no one was injured when the lava erupted there. Frightening to think about living right above it or anywhere near it.

This is drone footage from Jonathan (YT TheCodesearcher dotcom) from Noni Farms Road area I assume and posted today. Doesn't say but guessing it was from yesterday and last night. It really shows how massive and fast moving the flow is. He points out in the video description (click YouTube at bottom) that the lake is moving very fast and pooling where it steps down and huge lava lakes are forming in these spots. He cautions that these lakes are some 40-50 feet above ground and if there's a breakout at the one near Nanawale it could be devastating. Residents need to stay alert and aware.

I mentioned previously that when we lived closer to Menlo Park, CA (USGS's home base) we use to attend their monthly Public Evening leactures frequently. Also enjoyed their Open Houses which were great and fun for families. Anyway I wanted people to know that these lectures on all various geological topics are available to you even if you don't live in the area. A few days ago they posted the one held in May on Earthquakes in America's Heartland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS-11vjreF8

Other past lectures can be found on YouTube by searching for "USGS public lecture" and "USGS evening lecture". Generally these run 1 hour - 1.5 hours. You can filter by upload date for the latest posted but not always the date of the lecture. In person the lectures always included a Q&A with the audience. Some of these were included in the posted videos but not all. Always fascinating topics.

Saw this article in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald about two eateries that are sponsoring meals for Puna donations. Umekes Fishmarket Bar and Grill TONIGHT will have a silent auction to raise money and also have a donation room people can drop off items. All monies raised will go to the Pu'uhonua O Puna (Info Supply Hub).

Sam Choy's Kai Lanai in Kailua-Kona will be holding a Dine Out to Help Out to raise money for those impacted.. They are partnering with the Salvation Army Corp of Hawaii with 100% of all funds will directly benefit the disaster relief fund serving those affected by the volcano. Beginning TODAY and running THRU 9/25, there will be a unique menu every TUES where all sales from that item will go to the Salvation Army. A check will be issued every week to that Tuesday's sales.

We have a Hawaiian Ono franchise in the SF Bay area and hoping they will sponsor some sort of fund raising effort as well.

From Ryan Finlay on Hawaii Tracker on FaceBook:

Wednesday Morning Update 7am HST June 13th

Possible good news this morning

Fissure 8 continues to fountain to heights of 130-140 feet and produce a very vigorous lava river that is entering the ocean in two main entries. The cinder cone surrounding fissure 8 has now grown to 140 feet in height.

Fissure 16/18 spatter that has been seen for several days has diminished.

The crack at fissure 10, above Pomaikai was seen to be 806 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday when USGS took it’s temperature. This is not necessarily a sign that it’s about to erupt. It is also not good news, as it would be better if heat was not present at the crack, as the higher the temperature, the closer that magma is to the surface. I’m sure that USGS will be keeping a close eye on the readings at this location.

At 3:39 AM HST, another small explosion occurred at Kīlauea's summit. Preliminary magnitude is 5.4. As with previous events, minor ashfall may occur downwind.

Now the possible good news. We are all looking for any sign that this eruptive event could be coming closer to a conclusion. USGS is doing the same, and yesterday they mentioned one of the things they are looking at as an indicator that things could be changing. Right now the summit has been subsiding for over 40 days as the supply of magma has been diverted to the lower east rift zone. So, if the summit subsidence slows down, that could be a sign that things are beginning to change and more magma is remaining closer to the summit, and less magma is being diverted to the lower east rift zone. They believe that this may be beginning to happen, though it’s still difficult to tell because the slumping of Halema’uma’u has been interfering with their ability to see the subsidence related to the magma reservoir deflation.

You can bet your cinders we’ll be keeping an eye on this and or any other data that could reflect that a positive change could be coming!

Press on and have a great everyone! Much love and aloha!

From me: apologies if this is a duplication. I am having trouble keeping up! :)

Keeping up, LOL, you and me!  I'm also sensing a feeling of eruption exhaustion hitting people myself included. Heard Scott mention today that he just really wishes it would end, another homeowner on video could be heard saying he was thinking of moving out and the acknowledgement by the videographer that he's heard the same from some others too. I think people just want to find some normalcy again and sadly with the loss of home and land, this is just in the beginning for so many and why the focus really needs to be on them. Helps that the lava has more or less been behaving and not causing further damage but as we all know you can't take your eyes off of it and officials are there doing just that. We can be so thankful for the grassroots group, Pu’uhonua O Puna aka the HUB, the animal rescue groups, and organizations like the Red Cross, Sacred Heart to name a few as well as the tireless public government organizations/workers who have been doing their best in what has turned out to be an immense disaster for all the locals of Puna. Hopefully all the attention that has come to Leinlani Estates and Puna's way will stay focused on it in the coming months and lead to additional assistance for those affected and help get Puna back on it's feet.

Well guess it's time for the morning PGV camera shot. From 5:05am HST (8:05am PDT). Had my coffee so ready to post a few more updates to start the day off.

Updates from USGS:

Alert as of 6/13 @ 10:21pm HST (1:21am PDT). Had gone to bed before this was issued. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html  Pretty much status quo as far as same basic conditions for the past few days. For those in the ash prone areas, don't know if this will be of help but noticed the USGS has an ash model that projects the potential ash fallout location and intensity based on plume height, volume and wind direction that they update after each eruption of consequence. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/ash_information.html

Photos from 6/13 were posted: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

Latest Map from 6/13 @ 10am HST was posted (in case I didn't post or link to it yesterday, including it below--kind of in a rush this morning to get some updates out).

5b228ba5084b9_map-1(1).jpg.e7129aa0b27a5

As I was writing this just saw another explosion at Halema'uma'u had occured at 3:19am HST (6:19am PDT) of a 5.3 magnitude. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/06/13/breaking-news/lava-continues-to-pour-into-ocean-at-kapoho-bay/  These 5. quakes have been coming pretty regularly now as the rim continues to fall inward into the crater and have been anticipated within several hours of the monitored readings they are tracking.

Article on the quakes from Hawaii News Now: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38404624/seismic-activity-explosions-at-kilauea-summit-continue-to-rattle-parts-of-big-island

I watched the Pahoa Community meeting...what 2 nights ago...on the local community access tv station online. I fully expected as in the past to see it posted online on the Civil Defense's Big Island Video News site or on their YT channel (video usually broken out into parts from Civil Defense and USGS for example) but have not. If anyone notices it, please post. The Civil Defense portion actually had a lot of information for locals on assistance programs of various types and status/access within Leilani and other areas.

Update: decided to check Na Leo TV's site and saw they have a Video On Demand area and found the June 12 Pahoa Community Meeting there for viewing. Still think it belongs shared at least on the CD site where more people would expect to find it. Here's the NLTV's link, can't link directly to it but look for the 6/12 date: http://naleo.tv/vod/

The growth of the Fissure 8 "semi-cone" amazes me. According to the USGS it measures 130 ft. The lava erupting is 130 - 150 ft.. Guess is will just flow out  the side when the cone grows beyond the height the fissure can push vertically. Photo from USGS, 6/13/18.

previewImage-2241.jpg

Fissure 8 lava fountains continue to reach heights of 40-45 m (130-150 ft) from within the growing cone of cinder and spatter, which is now about 40 m (130 ft) at its highest point. Fountaining at fissure 8 continues to feed the fast-moving channelized flow that is entering the ocean at Kapoho.

@Moose, it does remind me of Diamond Head in that photo. I wonder what it will look like in a month. Could have said the same about F17 who's cone great quickly but didn't have multiple vents coming up inside it or the volume as F8.

Speaking of F8, I'm headed out to lunch so don't have the time to post or link to individual post threads at fb Hawaii Tracker group, but 3 starting posts that I found an interesting read there today. Here's the link to the fb page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiitracker/

First one, a post by Ryan Finlay who shared Ikaika Marzo's post of new tide pools in Kapoho (photos as well). Posted 1 hr. ago.

Second one posted by Ryan at 10:04am, about the spillover at PGV. Photos as well.

Third one, a post from Sarah Wilkinson an hour ago who linked to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald article on a conceptual plan location to help displaced residents. The conversation on the circular target area neaby is well...read for yourself. Anyway nice to see plans moving forward on where to set up shelter for the hundreds? of people who will require housing and at least out of tents.

USGS updates:

Alert as of June 14 @ 9:41am HST (12:41pm PDT). Morning overflight confirms no significant changes at vent or channel. "Magma continues to be supplied to the lower East Rift Zone. Seismicity remains relatively low in the area with numerous small magnitude earthquakes and low amplitude background tremor. Higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry." Scott mentioned in his early morning talk video that he could hear the rumbling even through his double paned windows this morning.

Pretty much boiler plate caution in these alerts is that "Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings".

Great new photo on the USGS photo section that was updated for today. A few others and video also posted. Cone at highest point estimated at 165 feet. SO2 and other volcanic gases in the orange tinge in the plume.

How about a post on the animals (from fb Hawaii Tracker group). This was the photo of Ginger the Lava Cat that Joseph Anthony (photographer at the Civil Beat house) captured in Leilani Estates watching the lava, and the one Axel found and rescued (see post made yesterday or day before?). BTW from what I understand Joseph Anthony had gone into LE to help with animal rescues after the house by F17 was evacuated due to lava approaching Hwy 132. He was stopped and all of his equipment was confiscated and not returned. Someone said that Nikon sent him a loner camera to use in the interim.

As for the chicks that were at the Civil Beat house they will have new homes and I thought the names were so appropriate
