Having a busy morning here so haven't had time to really post. Thank you @Moose . So far only had time to watch the first Bill video which my husband and I watched over coffee and will be checking out the other ones. He has a nice voice, easy to listen to and thought it flowed well with a lot of info about the climate and the island in general. Did catch Scott's as well and the Big Island Video News brief.

Sadly read this article early this morning on Mayor Kim who is not in good health, this goes beyond the walking pneumonia. Wishing him and his family the best and hope they are able to help him. I have watched a number of videos of him in meetings and such and found him to be a very caring, respectful leader who I believe has the community at heart. http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/06/16/hawaii-news/mayor-hospitalized-again-heart-functioning-at-20-percent/  No doubt the stress from the eruption in Leilani and Lower Puna, the demands of his job as mayor, and the loss of his own longtime-held favorite property in Kapoho have added to the stress on his heart. He has handled all this publicly with so much grace.

We'll be looking to take the next level of stuff beyond the "emergency" stuff we already have.  It won't be everything, but it will help out a lot.  It was nice to get some good news.  I should be next on the list, so I'm not as worried as before.

Just heard lava had broken out of the channelized flow near the fissure. Im going to try to confirm. I’m hoping for the best.#prayforpuna

Holding breath. Just logged on and saw this. After seeing Ken Boyer's video at Pomaikai like I said early this morning, it has stuck with me. BTW I'm assuming that location in Boyer's video at Pomaikai would be at Leilani Avenue and shooting past.

It was coming out terribly fast near the cone there and I know that Philip Ong and others said that the "elbow" ponding spots in LE (for Leilani homes) and down on way to Kapoho (Nanawale depending on location of breakout) were a concern to everyone as a location where to them it could jump there with a really fast flow. Appreciate any updates although I think I can check the #prayforpuna fb area and see the posts there but not on Ikaika's own fb page. Scary times hearing that. Nothing about this on Mileka's fb page or Hawaii Tracker group. I wonder how they check on this.

Confirmation just in from helicopter to Ikaika - was only small breakouts near vent - nothing to be concerned about at this point.

Gabe (YT H.I.S Survival) posted this video in last hour of the effects on plants in upper Leilani and on the worms (which are all dead where he's looking).  Kim had mentioned seeing some of her plants dying off when she was there and we've noticed in Scott's videos some were survivors when everything around them was brown even in the upper SE corner of Leilani where the brunt of the SO2 emissions were.

:bemused: And a bit of the unusual. This was posted on the fb Hawaii Tracker group site and asked if anyone knew what it was. Posted message said: "Help to identify: These are floating in the Ocean right where the lava is entering. What are these called?"

Three photos of it. Some imaginative suggestions needless to say. It does remind me of angler fish although the ones I think of had a "antenna" on top of their head although I do think they are located in deep water. Very possible that the lava intrusion into the ocean killed a lot of things from pretty good depths and they've floated to the surface and will litter the coastline. Someone posted they don't think they are anglers as they get huge. But this is kind of the stuff nightmares are made of.

Some of my favorite responses were: Ugly. This is why I don't swim in open water. Looks like a burnt bbq'd gold fish. Cooked. Scary fish from the Simpsons?

So someone posted this answer if you are done guessing....https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10216179482378011&set=p.10216179482378011&type=3&theater&ifg=1

From USGS recent photo Fissure 8

Amazed how the spatter cone continues to rise and expand

previewImage-2257.jpg

Fissure 8 produces a lava fountain that pulses to heights of 55 to 60 m (185 to 200 ft). Spattering has built a cinder cone that partially encircles fissure 8, now 51 m (170 ft) tall at its highest point. The steam in the foreground is the result of heavy morning rain falling on warm (not hot) tephra (lava fragments).

New land, forming of delta continues to expand

multimediaFile-2258.jpg

Lava from fissure 8 travels about 13 km (8 mi) down a well established channel (visible in the center of the image) to an ocean entry at Kapoho. Lava is building a seaward delta that is approximately 320 acres in size. The view is to the southwest with the Kapoho area in the lower right. Latest Thermal Map from USGS posted yesterday

image-485.jpg

This thermal map shows the fissure system and lava flows as of 6 am on Saturday, June 16. The fountain at Fissure 8 remains active, with the lava flow entering the ocean at Kapoho. Very small, weak lava flows have been active recently near the Fissure 16/18 area. The black and white area is the extent of the thermal map. Temperature in the thermal image is displayed as gray-scale values, with the brightest pixels indicating the hottest areas. The thermal map was constructed by stitching many overlapping oblique thermal images collected by a handheld thermal camera during a helicopter overflight of the flow field. The base is a copyrighted color satellite image (used with permission) provided by Digital Globe

Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING
Current Aviation Color Code: RED

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

The Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) eruption in Leilani Estates continues with little change.

Fountains from the Fissure 8 spatter cone continue to feed lava into the well-established channel that flows to the ocean at Kapoho. Occasionally, lava spills over the channel levees. The ocean entry remained fairly broad with laze blown onshore. Fissures 16 and 18 continue to ooze lava and mild spattering from Fissure 15 was observed late in the day. The flow field is relatively stable with little change to its size and shape for the past few days.

Pele's hair and other lightweight volcanic glass fragments from the lava fountain at Fissure 8 continue to fall downwind of the fissure, dusting the ground within a few hundred meters (yards) of the vent. High winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.

The most recent map of lava flows can be found at https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_maps.html

HVO field crews are on site tracking the fountains, lava flows, and spattering from Fissure 8 as conditions allow and are reporting information to Hawaii County Civil Defense. Observations are also collected on a daily basis from cracks in the area of Highway 130; no changes in temperature, crack width, or gas emissions have been noted for several days.

Volcanic gas emissions remain very high from Fissure 8 eruptions. Winds are expected to bring VOG to the central, south, and western parts of the Island of Hawaii. VOG information can be found at https://vog.ivhhn.org/

The ocean entry is a hazardous area. Venturing too close to an ocean entry on land or the ocean exposes you to flying debris from sudden explosive interaction between lava and water. Also, the lava delta is unstable because it is built on unconsolidated lava fragments and sand. This loose material can easily be eroded away by surf, causing the new land to become unsupported and slide into the sea. Additionally, the interaction of lava with the ocean creates "laze", a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs.

Magma continues to be supplied to the Lower East Rift Zone. Seismicity remains relatively low in the area with numerous small magnitude earthquakes and low amplitude background tremor. Higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry.

Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

Seismicity peaked at about 35 earthquakes per hour this morning. At 10:22 AM HST, a weak gas and ash emission rose from Halemaʻumaʻu crater produced by a subsurface explosion with energy equivalent to a magnitude-5.3 earthquake. Afterward, seismicity dropped abruptly at Kīlauea's summit but slowly increased during the day reaching 25 earthquakes per hour (magnitude <3.0) by 9PM HST. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit have dropped to levels that are about half those measured prior to the onset of the current episode of eruptive activity. This gas and minor amounts of ash are being transported downwind, with small bursts of ash and gas accompanying intermittent explosive activity.

For forecasts of where ash would fall under forecast wind conditions, please consult the Ash3D model output here: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/ash_information.html

Information on volcanic ash hazards and how to prepare for ash fall maybe found at http://www.ivhhn.org/information#ash (health impacts) OR https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanic_ash/ (other impacts).

Just got back from day out. I see I have some things to catch up on!

BTW it just got more expensive (jail time and fines) for getting caught in the no-go zone. This from Hawaii News Now, 6/16: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38441566/dlnr-lava-loiterers-face-jail-time-5000-penalty

Scott and Charles (YT Doing Hawaii) run into some women residents down at the blockade (looks like Leilani and Pomaikai if I'm reading the street correctly and think that's been the description of the rushing lava river footage). Sounds like one of them has a court hearing. Kind of hard to hear all the conversation.  What is striking is how the color of the vegetation as you drive down there changes.

And he meets the EPA official

The other day when I had more time, I explored some of the photos that were shared on Ryan Finlay's fb Hawaii Tracker group site and came across this map from the very early days in May when the quakes were happening. This was generated by reports of where cracks were appearing in the roads/lots in Leilani, and the red circled portion reflects where the first eruption occured. What's really interesting to me looking back at this is that while the lower NE corner near Mahala/Kahukai/Leilani became the first fissure site, the fissure line actually formed from there and southwestward more or less parallel to the line of cracks in Leilani in the western side. Guessing the cracks denote magma movement and swelling/deformation of the ground directly underneath or perhaps just a line of cracks caused by the earthquake movement.

So my question to the geologists would be "is there another tube or tubes located where the cracks ran on the western side of Leilani?" Thinking maybe the earthquakes that rocked Leilani in those early days, non-stop, shifted the ground and forced the magma to take a different path from the present fissure line. If so, this leads me wonder what's below that cracked area now and is there anything further that merits watching? Have the cracks widened, did steam come up from any of these. Any SO2 at the cracks that is making the grass yellow or brown there? If anyone heard of any speculation on the other pattern of cracks, please share.
