This panaramic view shows the lava river flow etched into lava levee.

USGS photo

multimediaFile-2263.jpg

Occasionally, minor amounts of lava briefly spill over the lava channel levees. The spill overs are the shiny gray lobes along the channel margins. The lava flow field has been relatively stable with little change to its size and shape over the past few days. View to the east, with the plume in the upper right showing the location of the ocean entry.

Continue to be amazed at the growth of Fissure 8 Cinder Cone. A relative flat area of Leilani Estates now has geologic structure dominating the landscape that was non existent not so long ago.

Sitting down with morning coffee  :interesting: and hope to get a chance myself to read what got posted yeterday in between checking out today's news. Here's the morning PGV cam. Looks pretty much the same as last night before heading to bed.

There was an evening Alert update from USGS as of Sunday, 6/17 @ 10:28pm HST (1:28am PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

No further updates of the photos or map.

Last night 8pm HST (11pm PDT) Dane DuPont (on fb Hawaii Tracker group) posted that Civil Defense and County indicated their count of homes lost had reached 533 homes. Dane's been doing the unofficial count for Hawaii Tracker group and the google community mapping project for homes destroyed and his count stands at 572. He said this is the closest the two have come to each other. I'm guessing the official reporting is done by more than aerial helicopter photos, and have heard in one of earlier budget meetings, that they use drones to go in to survey the homes when they can't get feet on the ground to do it. Their count is the one used for insurance companies so may take more time. At least that's my thought.

Dane also had this in his update that I found interesting: "USGS has some really general estimations of the volume of the magma reservoir beneath Kilauea, but they are confident that the reservoir holds hundreds of times the amount of lava that has erupted so far in the LERZ. Suggesting that it would take years to empty the lava supply out of Kilauea summit at the current flow rates. However, USGS says that pressure beneath the summit is already pretty low - and some pressure is required to drive magma from the summit to the LERZ.

There have not been many earthquakes in the LERZ over the past week, but within the last 24 hours there have been three quakes - 2 of which were M3.0+. Otherwise, seismic activity in the east rift has been pretty stable."

Had to laugh at this video and post from Joseph Anthony (our Honolulu Civil Beat former House Live Feed Photographer). Watch the rooster enter from the right side of the street. I've seen a number of videos now with pigs and cats in them. First for a rooster. I think dogs were easier to catch and evacuate. Click on "View on Facebook" if the video image isn't visible.

The visuals from this eruption are really something else and thankfully we even have some pretty impressive cellphone videos/photos these days adding to the quality of the images. One last visual to share, this one from Harry Durgin who took this image yesterday near Noni Farms Road via overhead helicopter I believe. Amazing look at the entrenched river channels there and again almost looks like it's hardening over due to the color of the lava. Click to enlarge. With the patches of yellow and green in the shot makes for an interesting image of the flow.

Debbie - Interesting mentioning the feral pigs. They can out run the lava so it appears they are consolidating their numbers in West Leilani Estates. Based on Scott's observation's of pig rutting and sightings around the area. They are intelligent creatures and makes sense that are seeking greener pastures to eat. Hope they are not getting pushed to be more aggressive in a survival mode. Those encountered in the Florida Everglades can be a nasty lot, the male boars are mean, females with babies are very protective and unpredictable. Very wise to keep dogs away from the pigs, they can do extreme damage quickly.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald has this article on farmers in Lower Puna and the effects lava has had on them. Mentions Jan Anderson who's palm nursery was buried along with her husband's orchid nursery in Kapoho, along with their vacation rental. Their home is still standing but inaccessible. Wow what a tremendous loss for them. If you are on the island and want to help her out she will be continuing to sell the last of her palms at Rozett's Nursery near 28th Ave and Kaloli Dr in HPP from Thursday through Saturday. I believe I read in another article some days ago that focused on her husband that she was able to move some of her palms out ahead of time but her husband didn't get a chance to do that with his stock.

For properties inundated by lava, the County is giving them a market value of zero, meaning they won't owe any property tax for the next fiscal year. Further "Lisa Miura, acting property tax division administrator for the county, said that will also apply to the mauka portion of Leilani Estates that’s been affected by evacuations, though spared inundation....She said the county is losing about “$5 million and counting” in annual property tax revenue because of the disaster."

We have some feral pigs here in the SF Bay area mostly in County park land but they do spill over into neighborhoods damaging wide swathes of lawns in some neighboring communities. Happens every year and makes the news. Docents and park rangers will warn unfamiliar hikers how agressive they can be, and like you said the male boars can be very agressive and do some damage with those tusks. Fortunately I guess the only lawn destruction we've seen where we are at comes from animals digging up grubs in our yard. Can still be destructive but at least you don't risk attack (unless they would be rabid I guess). Of course we all know about those nasty little voles and gophers that chop on our palms. :rage:

Harry Durgin is one of the professional photographs that catches a ride on the overflight helicopters. Always eye-candy to see their work and their equipment catches so much detail maybe even the human eye doesn't always pick up on. Sometimes you'll see their eruption photos on their website but not always.

Got to applaud the efforts so many have made.

FEMA is so bureaucratic that getting assistance can be difficult at times. My experience with FEMA is less than stellar, seen the scammers benefit while the truly needy get nothing. If you are working right after a disaster and can't stand in their lines, your out.

Heard a couple of weeks ago the American Red Cross was searching for office space to set up operations for the Puna area. They are probably still looking, very inept organization in my opinion. They were horrible in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. 25 years later, have yet to see them learn from their previous experiences. The Red Cross does get their donations operation going immediately, to me natural disasters are an opportunity for fund raising. Have not heard a single instance the American Red Cross has done anything for anyone during these eruptions where people have lost their homes. Triple thumbs down

@Mike in LB, did you get in with your brother to his place over the weekend?

Yes, we got in yesterday.  Five of our neighbors helped out, including the folks who lost the dome house on Nohea St. Civil Defense let some of us go to Nohea St for a brief visit to our homes or what is left of our homes/property.  All in all, it was a great day and eased some of the stress for the entire group.  I should be next in line for a visit for property retrieval.

I made a brief trip to the back of my property on Nohea yesterday.  It was a bit terrifying to see the lava mounds and traces of the huge, raging lava river, just a few hundred feet away.

Mike good to hear. Hope the timing goes well for your trip in. I am curious what with the SO2 in the air down there, did it affect any of the contents in the house? I can't even imagine being on the other side of the lava berm. I am glad your houses have been spared and you guys could go in and get some things out. So much better than starting over with nothing like in a fire, quake, flood or tornado when there's nothing left to go back into.

Haven't had much time today to do much updating and doesn't seem as though there's a lot to report what with the area being pretty shut down with the hefty fines. I saw Scott was annoyed by the peace of the neighborhood being interrupted by lots of helicopter flights overhead. Garden there still looking pretty nice.

Since we we've been looking at cool volcano/lava/nighttime photos here, I thought I would mention those from Sean King. fb EpicLava, John, had put up a memorial post about him on Father's Day that I saw and got me curious about who Sean King was. I found out Sean was a Leilani Estates tour guide/photographer who passed away on Feb. 1 while conducting a tour on the lava fields near HVNP and Kalapana.

5b2839ee7a4a2_epiclava-1.jpg.890af1f80b1

I found this article I wanted to share - by PetaPixel - on him with news coverage video from KHON2 and a great Yahoo! Flickr profile video of him and his Hawaii Stargazing Adventures business*: https://petapixel.com/2018/02/03/hawaiian-photographer-dies-leading-tour-near-lava-flow/

Sean's Flickr account is still up (linked to in the above article as well) and you can see some of his work there. From all the articles I've read he was a very well liked guy and as soon as I started watching him on his Flickr spotlight profile video I could see why. Even from the article's leading photo of him giving the thumbs up, I had this instant feeling I would have liked him if we had ever met. He reminds me of Mike Holmes from HGTV (Holmes on Homes, Holmes Makes it Right, etc), very personable and friendly. Undoubtedly Sean would have been right there with photos in Leilani if he was still with us. As mentioned in the Flickr profile video Sean was color-blind. He was interviewed a few years back by the NY Daily News (he was from Long Island, NY) and described how he would set up for his shots. Maybe Sean's story of his love for Hawaii will inspire someone who sees this, maybe someone who is also color-blind and never thought of going into photography.

*here's the Flickr profile of him:

Also from fb Hawaii Tracker group, this photo of F8 from Jeremiah Osuna. While the cone and lava are interesting, I realized that not only can you see Fissure 8, but you can see the kipuka with Victor's house (Scott's pig house) down on Kahukai, the steaming fissures across from PGV and to the right of the kipuka, the area where PGV and cone behind it are, maybe steam from F16/18 that are active right now, assume that's the Green Mountain Kapoho Crater in the distance behind the steaming, and the lava's ocean entry directly behind F8 off to the right. NO trees blocking your view. An incredible view. And one of utter destruction of the former lush land it was. Click on "View on Facebook" if the image doesn't appear here.

Latest KHON 2 Video posted: focusing on rapid lava flow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NF3zLajnDNA

Published on Jun 18, 2018

In this video taken from the Leilani Estates subdivision, lava at fissure 8 pulses above the cinder cone adding fragments of lava (spatter) that build the cone higher. From fissure 8, lava flows freely over small cascades (rapids) into a well-established channel. Near the vent, lava is traveling about 24 km per hour (15 mi per hour). Lava slows to about 2 km per hour (1.5 mi per hour) near the ocean entry at Kapoho.

Folks from Civil Defense told us yesterday they haven't had a reading other than "0" for SO2 since they've been escorting people back in.  That's probably from June 8 through the 17th.  Grass is noticeably brown, but palms all seem to be ok.  House contents are not impacted.

Since they haven't called me today, I just called Civil Defense and could only receive a response that "I was still on the list."  The person answering the call could not tell me why I wasn't placed after my brother in their sequencing.  Apparently, someone else (not available to the public) decides the order of people entering.  My brother and I placed our names on the list during the same phone call, so we sort of expected to be consecutive.  Well, it didn't happen that way.  Not surprising that things are still totally incomprehensible and slow when dealing with them.  I'll just have to wait and be patient.

Note:  The people in the field for Civil Defense were extremely nice and very helpful.

So here's the info on the new Civil Beat live streaming camera set up. They did a test set today, which was posted above, streaming from Anthony's phone not the camera (camera will be the same one used for the F17 house). Aloha Broadband is coming by tomorrow to give them a better connection and they hope to be up Live at around 11am HST (2pm PDT). Here's the general view. No Rusty Rooster unfortunately.

5b28837049b1e_Keaaufeed-1.jpg.73f5a7f150

F8 is to the right and to the left is the Ocean entry in Kapoho. The feed will be running through the night and Anthony says the clouds are all lit up red so still a nice view then. Due to YouTube's system they will have to shut down every 10 hours so the feed can be saved to video for later viewing. So there will be a new live link each time. Pretty much like it worked before I think. Here is the view zoomed in on F8 to give you an idea:

5b288371873a6_Keaaufeed-2.jpg.95c673d661

and the view of the ocean entry:

5b288374981f0_Keaaufeed-4.jpg.33bf38cfeb

So we'll have some idea of how things are going at the fissures. He also said at night on F8 you'll be able to see some lava shooting up. This is not anywhere the zoomed-in camera view we had of the fissures down at David and Jonathan's house off Hwy 132, but as Anthony said there is no place they have found closer than this that has a view, power, internet and protection from the elements and is outside of the restricted zone. This is the only Live Feed, as no one else has found a place either.  So be kind about the situation and he requested that people please don't complain on the chat.

This is Jack Miller our Live Feed Benefactor. Kind of looks a bit like Stan Lee in this screen capture I thought.

5b288372eab91_Keaaufeed-3.jpg.1ea2e5b73f

This is Jack's vacation rental and he will be in to check on the camera a few times a day. There may be guests staying there too. The camera will be set in a fixed position every so often for a period of time. We've been forewarned as with the previous homeowners, that there will be times when the audio is cut to give them privacy. Please be understanding and respectful in the live chat.  Jack is a 30 year Puna resident. Jack is a filmmaker and musician (singer/songwriter/keyboardist and producer). Jack's a pretty cool guy and much mahalo to him for doing this for all of us. That goes for Honolulu Civil Beat as well.

If you are interested in watching/listening to some of Jack's music video's here's Slipping Away

Yes, that's Jack in his younger days. And here's Love Has a Way:

If you watched Anthony's cell phone video feed above, you saw him out there machete-ing some of the taller plants to give us a better camera view. Can't wait to tune in tomorrow.

It's their new spot, right on the ocean. Camera will not be controlled remotely. Yes they will have zoom. The live stream will start tomorrow at 10am. This is just a trial run right now, using a cell phone, their main camera will be operational tomorrow. Jack Miller is the homeowner, a 30 year resident. They will not have the close up views like the last set up. But they have a panoramic capability from Fissure 8 to the ocean entry. Sorry, No Rusty the Lava Rooster in residence.

If it starts at 2pm PDT where I'm at, you're 3 hours later right, so 5pm EDT? Hawaii is on Standard time so I only have a 3 hour difference with the islands. I know you are always up earlier than me!

Here's the PGV cam from just now. It's 7:25pm HST and 10:32pm PDT where I'm at or East coast 1:32am.

A look at how the eruption has impacted the town of Pahoa also a bit of history on the town. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/06/18/hawaii-news/kilauea-eruption-picking-up-the-pieces/?HSA=cd630b649b6b2fe777625501e49405bd7c042268

USGS updates:

Alert as of Mon. 6/18 @ 3:45pm HST (7:45pm PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

As for the fissure activity, F8 is still going with little change. F16/18 are oozing lava and F6 visible in the PGV cam at night with mild spattering.

Several new photos were uploaded along with a video at Halema'uma'u. The GPS station at the North Pit has subsided about 197 feet in the past week. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

Here's the new Map as of 9am HST (noon PDT) for Mon. June 18. You'll notice some lava advances in 4 different locations: 1) in LE a small breakout south of Kahukai advancing towards Luana from the old flow from Makamae area, 2) west of Noni Farms Road and Hwy 132 from the main channel flow, 3) a small break out at the northwestern edge of Kapoho Crater (Green Mountain), and 4) around Vacationland in Kapoho in several places and moving southward there. If you look closely at the map where Kapoho Bay use to be you'll see a light gray outline of the old shoreline to give you a feeling of where the new land has formed.

OMG look at the limbo Thomas Mason and his wife may find themselves in. They started building their retirement home on Kupono Street in LE on Valentines Day this year. Almost ready to add drywall when the eruptions began.

So far FEMA says 730 have registered at the Disaster Relief Center. http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/06/18/hawaii-news/fema-so-far-730-register-at-disaster-recovery-center/

Also in this article Janet Snyder, Mayor Kim's spokeswoman said that scientists are keeping a close eye on F9 and 24. They are steaming but no SO2 being emitted. Winds will be shifting on Wednesday and Thursday and bringing emissions to South Hilo and the Saddle. Friday the tradewind will be back.

Community Meeting on the lava situation at 5pm HST (8pm PDT) on Tuesday, 6/19 at Pahoa High School. This was noted in the above Hawaii Tribune-Herald article but I haven't seen it mentioned on the CD site. I believe the meeting will be aired live on Na Leo TV (local community television on Channel 55), which is where it was televised last week. Here's the link: http://naleo.tv/Channel-55/  Unfortunately the guides for the channels don't work so I can't verify this. If you are interested in watching last week's meeting, you can do so here: http://naleo.tv/vod/  See the 6/12 video.

Hawaii News Now article on Rusty and Jenny Perry who own Kapoho Grown. Their fruit farm is ready for harvest but they were cut off by the lava and when they evacuated didn't have time to take any fruit with them. Thanks to neighbors giving them access across their properties, they are able to harvest some of their crops during the day. Staying at night isn't something they do. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38453299/big-island-farmers-brave-lava-toxic-fumes-to-harvest

Safety tip from the locals. In case there are still people unaware that Pele's hair blown by the wind isn't something to be careful of, saw a fb Hawaii Tracker group post mentioning that a lady had to go to her doctor to have some taken out of her eye and they wondered where Pele's hair is located in the area. Later saw a post by Dallas Koons that she was sweeping off her roof and got some in her eye. The suggestion by many was to wear goggles when doing this (and also a mask) and if you do get it in your eye to see an ophthalmologist in case the corena was scratched and you don't want to get an eye infection.
