Fascinating US Dept of the Interior film in color, entitled "Eruption of Kilauea: 1959 - 1960". Filmed by the USGS and National Park Service. 27 min long. Covers the 1959 eruption of Kileau Iki and concludes with the eruption in 1960 at Kapoho ending.

We walked across Kilauea Iki's lava lake and so seeing the footage from back in 1959 was terribly interesting to me and kind of frightening given the power that layed below our feet a few decades before. I knew from the Park info that it had erupted quite spectacularly years before but seeing the video gave a better understanding. I wish there were more long shots of the crater when it was erupting. The close ups are of course impressive but more long shots would have been nice to better show scale and actual proximity within the crater where all this was happening. Really valuable historical film all the same. Had never seen video of eruption backflow like at Iki.

Both eruptions at Kilauea Iki and in Kapoho were stunning and you got the chance through this film to see Kapoho Crater form, also the recovery of the land there with orchid and papaya fields.

I will admit when I pressed play and listened to the music and saw the grahics I felt like I was about to watch a 1950s B-movie and see a Lava Monster emerge from the flow.

I love that film! I've watched it multiple times. The most impressive scene is where the fountain of lava grows from something like 30ft to 1000ft in a few seconds! Very fortunate that one erupted into a pit crater instead of over land. I too was able to walk across Kilauea Iki back in 2007- it was amazing.

I can't even imagine watching fountaining attain that height. We are so lucky to still have this video to watch and the color wasn't all that bad. Our Kilauea Iki hike was probably the best part of our time in HVNP, and we did a helicopter ride over Pu'uO'o back then too which was exciting but Iki ranked higher. What was/is interesting to think about is that that eruption in Kapoho in 1960 created the beautiful land and tide pools that were so cherished until they were reclaimed and started all over.  They are saying no more building in Zone 1 (and 2??) but I have to wonder if that restriction really still apply years from now. Also will they not permit farming there? Looking at all those papayas and orchid one year later, hard to imagine they can prevent it if people still own the land.

----

Speaking of older films I don't think I posted this 1918 silent film of "The Volcano Kilauea" by Ray J. Baker yet. The description on YT says it was updated through 1924 and used the Prisma Process (not exactly what I'd call color but I guess for the day it was). This time period the eruption involved the entire crater I believe not just the small area of Halema'uma'u we have erupting today. And 1924 was when the eruption threw out those giant boulders.

----

I may have posted this video of the 1955 eruption previously but including it now in case people didn't see it. It all started with 2 fissures erupting along Pohoiki Road.

Interesting to note the similarities and difference among all these eruptions. Given both videos mention fountaining of 1,000 feet and more, I think LE caught a break with fountaining only around 200-250 feet. The falling tephra from those skyscraper ones surely would have buried a lot of homes very quickly.

Here's a few articles I thought might be of interest here:

From Hawaii Tribune-Herald: Requests for opening up the lava affected roads (not happening anytime soon) and providing a viewing area of F8 (still on the table). Warning signs along the edge of the flow have been posted. Several potential sites are being considered. They mention Sean King's death (who some posts back around Father's Day I mentioned here in the thread and gave some background on) and wanting to avoid anyone being expose to rain soaked lava that gives off deadly laze.

Mayor Kim, back in his office after his pneumonia and heart attack, has approached Ormat (PGV) about donating funds to the county. The Food Basket and Hilo's Farmers Market are working with Sioux Honey Assoc. Co-op to host a produce drive to benefit lava evacuees (see article for more info if local and want to participate in some way). 4 years ago today the 2014 Puna lava flow from Pu'uO'o to almost the downtown of Pahoa began.

From Hawaii Tribune-Herald: The Bay Clinic's Mobile Health Unit will be stopping in the village of Volcano starting Thursday. It provides medical and dental services. This is in thanks to the efforts of the Rotary Club of Volcano who has worked over the past 2 years to make this happen. See the article for the schedule for Medical and Dental visits and how to make an appointment.

Last night was the weekly Community Meeting at the Pahoa High School cafeteria. You can watch the video replay of it on Na Leo TV (public access tv, channel 55). Look for the link to the 6/26 meeting in their Video On Demand section: http://naleo.tv/vod/  I haven't watched yet so can't comment on what was discussed.

----

Interestingly I spotted this post from Mileka's fb page about the meeting last night.

5b33b59084209_mileka-1(11).jpg.be87f62d9

----

I have noticed that Mileka's fb posts have dwindled down from what they were and tend to cover more video footage (F8 and lava river) and photos lately as opposed to info. Granted I've seen a reduction in Puna Lava news myself from across the board as the lava channel has been pretty stable and no new fissure action or earthquakes has changed the status quo of the past few days. But there has seemed to me to be a media shut down so I find the above and the comments after her post interesting to read (see link above to view her fb page and post in it's entirety). Even the CD Big Island Video News site has had a different feel in stories on it lately.  I suspect there is conflict over how things are presented by both sides. Sad to see especially since I believe both sides have worked very hard for the community during this stressful seemingly-never-ending natural disaster.

----

Noticed this in one of the comments on Mileka's fb page. Believe this is concerning the man who was last seen in the area around Kapoho off Hwy 132 who hasn't been heard from. As far as I know he's the only one reported missing after the eruption down in that area.

Hawaii County Civil Defense updated their Flickr album with photos and videos from yesterday, Tues., 6/26 (241 photos and 4 videos). Several photos that stood out for me.

The USGS map has shown that the slow lava intrusion continues around the Kapoho Crater (Green Mountain/Green Lake). This back section which had looked like it had several houses on it not that long ago appears to be down to just one.

John (fb EpicLavaTours) posted this video up in Volcano near the golf course. He and Jeff Judd, who's lived there for 45 years, walk the Golf Links Road near the course and comment on the fresh cracking that's been observed in the past few days. They continue on to Jeff's house which sits on the crater upper edge wall of an ancient cauldera formed about 500 years ago. His lot ends with the HVNP property boundary on the other side of his fence which has a sheer drop down in to the old cauldera long since grown over with vegetation. They discuss the likelihood that the cracking along this cauldera top edge is due to the void below subsiding. Very interesting view of a property you normally wouldn't have the opportunity to see. They also mention more cracking on Hwy 11.

Wow so much Tephra seen in this video. Seeing the oxidation on that 50 day old BBQ grill shows the caustic properties of the SO2 gases. Interestingly you see banana and a few palms pushing new leaves. The tenacity that plants have is amazing. Especially 300 yards (900 ft) from the Splatter Cone of Fissure 8 as mentioned in Gabe's video.

The thermal map shows an interesting development. On June 24th, the thermal imaging showed a more southerly trek and a creeping along overall movement to the south. Now a bit of going the other way can be inferred by the current imaging. Looks like it changed at the southerly bend.

One thing is certain about lava flows, it is a continual dynamic in flux. It's why all the volcanologists almost always refer to trends, never concrete predictions.

Only a few days left for the Honolulu Civil Beat cam live feed. The equipment is being picked up on Sunday (read in chat last night) and likely Saturday will be the last viewing day. Not sure what time it goes down. Here's a view from it this morning, still early there, 4:48am HST.  While this location wasn't the exciting view like F17 & 20/22 was at David and John's house with the lava erupting vents, it was a beautiful daytime view of Lower Puna, the sound of the waves and birds and croquis was pleasant and we had some colorful steam cloud play to view at night. It made me feel connected to the area. Really disappointed that all we will have now is a grayscale thermal moment-in-time capture cam from the PGV area. Better than nothing for an idea of the conditions at the moment but will still miss the CB cam all the same. Super nice of Honolulu Civil Beat to go to the effort to find a location, make the arrangements with homeowner Jack Miller and Aloha Broadband and provide the view we had. Mahalo everyone.

Haven't had the chance to listen to Tuesday's Pahoa Community Meeting yet, but the Honolulu Star-Advertiser article reports that residents spoke out about the looting that was going on in their evacuated homes. Sounds like it was rather contentious meeting between residents and officials regarding no help patroling the evacuated areas. As I read just this week I think, the officials on the ground are being reduced. I think I can see why Talmadge Magno (CD) may have ended the meeting discussion before Mileka (Hawaii News Now) could speak with him.

Some other items in today's morning news:

USGS reports they expect 2 more homes in the Kapoho Beach Lots area to succumb to fire today due to increased lava breakout in the northern area. Apparently they are aware that some residents have chosen to stay in their homes so Hawaii Fire Department will be going in to survey the area.

There have been numerous limited spillovers from Fissure 8 channel. Intersection of Pohoiki Rd and Hwy 132 (the Y), north of Kahukai Street, and on Luana. USGS said the flow is moving almost twice as fast, at about 18mph instead of 10mph.

Flow front in Kapoho is about 4K feet from Ahalanui Beach Park (Warm ponds).

At the Tuesday Pahoa Community Meeting details were vague about plans for evacuee displaced housing. Roy Takemoto (executive assistant to Mayor Kim) told the paper that details could be ready for release in about 2 weeks. The article has additional info on the housing proposals and work being done on private property like at the Sacred Heart Church area.
