The Civil Beat cam is totally "vogged in" with the exception of some blades of plant leaves you can see right in the foreground, but barely.

Just checked the PGV cam to compare and this is what LE has right now that extends northward to Hawaiian Paradise Park where Civil Beat camera is.  Checked WeatherUnderground and it's raining there now in Lower Puna but not in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Interesting research article John (fb EpicLavaTours) posted a link to having to do with a gradual caldera collapse in Iceland due to lateral magma outflow. Similar to our Kilauea situation?

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305339928_Gradual_caldera_collapse_at_Bardarbunga_volcano_Iceland_regulated_by_lateral_magma_outflow

It needs a certain kind of geologist to properly read, but Bárðarbunga, Iceland's biggest volcano, is enough like Kilauea (basaltic) for the caldera collapse and lava flow situation to look similar.  You have the situation of magma tending moving upward (buoyancy), but also tending to leak sideways.  Fun with temperature and pressure.

A major initial point of the paper is that basalitc volcanos seem to do slow caldera collapses while silicic volcanos (like Pinatubo in the Philippines) do them abruptly.  Models of the last Yellowstone caldera collapse are based on it being very sudden and exceedingly violent--ash deposits are as far away as Texas.

The spectacular collapse of Kilauea's caldera has deprived us of what was perhaps Hawaii's grandest tourist attraction, but it is assuredly going to be one of the best-documented volcanic events ever.  Icelanders will be fascinated.

Ryan Finlay (fb Hawaii Tracker group) started a very interest post/thread about thinking about the future of Puna and what was essential initially, and people have been giving their feedback and ideas in response. I know this is also a topic of an upcoming community meeting in Puna that several gov't representatives have invited residents to participate in. Anyway if you want to read the comments and/or participate in the fb thread if you are a fb user, here's the Hawaii Tracker group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiitracker/ Look for Ryan's post, probably will remain near the top.

I also spotted this post by Dane DuPont regarding flyovers and mostly about "seeps". What they are, how they differ from spillovers, where one was seen and what the thinking is on them. They pose a potential risk wherever they happen so good time to get educated on them. Here's Dane's post.

Saw a post on fb Hawaii Tracker group by LE resident Thomas Willemin, who shared from a financial aspect what he has gone through so far on his house that was located on Luana St. and was covered in lava. If you have an affected home, you might want to check out his post and the comments that others have left.

BTW today (6/28) the County's Real Property Tax Office form for his home is now showing as "Complete Demolition of Existing Structure(s) Destroyed in the 2018 Kilauea Eruption". It was "inspected" on 6/13 which probably means by overflight photos in their case since it was involved in a large flow area. A property 2 lots down and across the street from his has not yet received loss verification, nor has a house 3 doors* down. Might give you some idea of how long the property tax reduction for affected homeowners is taking to process.

*Just noticed these homeowners had a sale date of 4/17/18 and deed recording date of 4/23/18. Can't imagine how they feel.

It's been 2 months, 60 days since the eruption happened in Leilani. Update with Ikaika, brother John, and Philip Ong. Ikaika relays that the HUB is breaking ground tomorrow to build 50 micro units. Discussion was on seeps, channel flow and overflows-- they discuss 3 options why this might be happening.

If anyone has homeowners insurance through Lloyds of London, saw this angry homeowner's post and wanted to give a heads up should your policy with them still be in effect but coming up for renewal. https://www.facebook.com/jordan.sonner.9/posts/10216285199060624

Here's an article from West Hawaii Today from 6/7/18 on moratoriums on new business during disasters and the Hawaii Property Insurance Association that was created by lawmakers in 1991 after Kalapana. In part here's the info from the article that those who were cancelled by their carrier and looking to HPIA will want to know:

  • "But as far as people trying to get new insurance now, HPIA has implemented a six-month waiting period.
  • It will, however, issue policies for homeowners who are being non-renewed by their insurer with no waiting period as long as they can prove they have insurance in effect.
  • But as far as the reason for the waiting period during a perilous time in an area that was a major reason HPIA was created, it referred to the Hawaii Revised Statutes that authorizes it to sell and place a maximum six-month waiting period in disaster areas where other companies have issued moratoriums."

From KHON2 yesterday, "the Department of Health is investing more than $1M to install 10 new long-term stationary air quality monitoring stations at strategic locations across Hawaii Island, as well as mobile laboratories, to create a robust data gathering system." These are part of a 3-Phase plan to provided residents with better information on their air quality.

There are presently 5 long-term stationary monitors: Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Mountain View, Ocean View, and Pahala. A sixth station is presumed to be covered in lava in Leilani Estates. For more info on the plan, which locations have already been determined, see: https://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/sulfur-dioxide-levels-falling-more-monitoring-planned-for-hawaii-island/1272016153

and from earlier this morning:

5b368495bb064_cbcam-1(11).jpg.cd747366fa

and at one point the sky this morning was very clear and you could actually see the crater rim. This is the first time I was able to distinguish it as mornings have been either voggy or it was raining. The fountaining as you guys know has more or less only gone above the rim on occasion lately what with the rim being 180 feet high at it's highest point. Thinking this location early on when the cone was lower and the fountaining was 200-250 ft. might have been a pretty awesome view. Jack said he could see the lava back then, not just the glow in the clouds. I'm really going to be sorry to see this camera get taken down.

Lots of cloud cover and F8 still putting out a lot of steam so looking good for a red/orange steam view. Hopefully Jack will be there to zoom in like last night. Honolulu Civil Beat is coming by Sunday to pick up the camera equipment needed elsewhere so this is probably our last chance for any live video for some time. That person said they had gone into LE tonight and helped a family out. Reach out if you are able, sure they've love to see some new faces lending a hand. BTW Kris is one of the LE residents who lost his house to lava (posted about him a few posts above). I know from the fb posts that he and Heath have gone on a number of evac missions.

The things that we take for granted like doing laundry and having clean smelling clothes! Hawaii News Now has this story tonight of LE resident Dean Krakauer who now finds himself with rent payments and doing laundry at the Pahoa Suds and Duds. Thanks to the Puna Baptist Church's laundry voucher program for evacuees like Mr. Krakauer they are able to help get people back on their feet again even in small ways like laundry expense. There's a phone number or email for the Puna Baptist Church if you want to help out in this small way.

The community meeting at Volcano was informative, very polite, and discouraging in terms of reopening, apart from the Mauna Loa road.

While Volcano House is offering reservations after mid-July, it's rather clear that with the water system drained to minimize further damage, and with ground slumping expanding in a northwesterly direction, there is little reason to expect the campground facilities to reopen anytime soon.  Likewise, there's no way of  forecasting Kilauea's behavior.  A somewhat similar situation around 1500 led to fountaining on a huge scale that dumped lots of stuff on Volcano.  Then again, the present event might be winding down.

To a rough first-order approximation, lava output has been equivalent to the volume of slumping at the caldera.  Maybe 30% of the near-summit lava reservoir??

Speaking of the Volcano area, here's Mayor Kim's plea to the Council going to bat for the 0.25% General Excise and use tax surcharge adoption. He starts off with the impact of the closing of the Hawaii Volcano National Park. Continued to speak on why the passage of this tax was necessary, due to the previous cuts that only were to maintain status quo, and that was before the eruption which has changed everything. The tax passed.

The following is the Council's passage of the Bill 159 (including video):

In in daily reading I come across a lot of people who want to help the lava animals. I had previously heard about Candi Salazar's efforts to help care for the animals of displaced owners who had to evacuate. A request tonight has gone out for help on fb Hawaii Lava Updates. I believe I read on tonight's CB live feed chat (or maybe on fb Hawaii Tracker group) that someone had called Home Depot and ordered some fencing for someone in need. Have to wonder if it wasn't for her. Other people have said if you want to help out you can also order feed for the animals. I see both of these items mentioned in the article.

More on Ikaika's HUB project for micro housing. Don't know about you guys but after watching years of Alaska Gold Rush, I'd love to drive a D9 LOL.

----

One person, Micah Gauthier, posted a video showing his friend, Brian, driving (ie. moving back) into Leilani Estates like some others who had evacuated west of Pomaikai, because there simply isn't anywhere else they can go and/or don't have the resources to look elsewhere.

----

The HUB is looking for pallets to help someone who lost there home in Kapoho and wants to build a pallet house above Hawaiian Sanctuary.

----

The site also shared this stunning image taken at dusk of F8 by Joseph Anthony. Does anyone know if he ever got his confiscated camera equipment back after his court date on his trespassing citation back on June 1? I tried to find out online and only came up with accounts of it being taken during when I think he was helping the Civil Beat's live feed homeowners evacuate after officials told them the road was being closed down due to lava and they had to leave. He does some stunning camera work.

From the thermal map Philip Ong was showing it looks like there is still very hot lava at the edge where now 3 homes were destroyed.

This is the current posted thermal map and the homes are at that far northern tip near the ocean that is show white along the edges. Philip Ong explained that in his talk tonight (above).
