Ann Kalber (Mick's wife) was able to get back into their home in Leilani today. She shared this video album. How depressing it had to have been for her. Interesting to see which plants have remained green though.

Also noticed that Hawaii County Civil Defense posted a few days worth of aerial footage (video and close up photos).

From 6/28:  https://flic.kr/s/aHsmnunSob   photos from lower puna/Kapoho and along the coast, F8 and Leilani, PGV.

A field that has been decimated. Papayas? Notice the cows in the field?

From 6/29:  https://flic.kr/s/aHsmipzcsG  The fountaining may not be as noticable above the height of the cone but looking through the photos from Friday, it's still very active inside.

From Saturday, 6/30:  https://flic.kr/s/aHsmkG9tst    Some great shots inside the neck of Pu'uO'o, lots of closeups of F8 and inside Leilani, lower puna, ocean entry, Kapoho Beach Lots. Here's a few from Leilani.

Will fissure 8 ever attain enough size to be considered a 'named' volcano?

From what I have read, if it persists for a very long time, say well over a year, it would be named, although it would never be considered a separate volcano, as it is part of the Kilauea volcano system. Shorter eruptions have been referred too by location and date, such as 1960 Kapoho.

Like Kim said, it will be named eventually. They need to confer with the native peoples, a Hawaiian name will be used.

Many are getting tired of calling it Fissure 8, even the scientists.

It keeps cranking out the lava, I've lost track as to how many acres have been created where there was once ocean. All state owned property.

Morning, late night and late start and out to breakfast soon. Here's the view this morning from PGV cam:

5b3910109540b_pgvcam-1(17).jpg.186319efc

as for USGS updates:

No updates since I last posted of the Alert, photo or map sections. BTW on the bottom of the USGS Maps they always box in a recent total for the Flow Area in case you hadn't noticed. As of June 30, 3pm HST, the total flow area was 10 square miles (26 sq kilometers) and the Lava Delta area was ~520 acres.

F8 is really just another vent on the side of Kilauea, like Pu'uO'o. The magma from it comes from Kilaeua Crater's hot spot, albeit further down the rift zone than Pu'uO'o and looking like directly from the hot spot as Kilauea has not refilled yet. So what I was wondering was if Pu'uO'o is declared "dead" due to a break and diversion in the delivery system from Kilauea, when would it be given simply a crater designation like so many old craters that mark the landscape. This, from wikipedia: "The hill was initially nicknamed "Puʻu O" by volcanologists, as its position when marked on a map of the area coincided with an "o" in "Lava flow of 1965". Later, the elders of the village of Kalapana were asked to name the new hill, and chose Puʻu ʻŌʻō, meaning hill of the digging stick.[2] The name is also often translated as "Hill of the ʻŌʻō Bird".

Will be out and about today. Hope everyone checks out the new album photos from the Hawaii County Civil Defense linked to above. Really turning into our best source of how the land is being reshaped by the lava.

Latest YT video uploaded by USGS. Fissure 8 looks like it has a big lava slide feeding the river of lava. Easily seen from the ocean 8 miles away, it is the dominant feature of Lower Puna. The Splatter Cone is now said to measure 180 foot from it's base. The scale of the river and it's flow become surreal when you view the USGS scientist on the bank.

Can't get over this view from downtown Pahoa shared by Jim Nelson on fb Hawaii Tracker. I remember seeing Scott in a recent video stop at Paul's to get gasoline before heading to the Farmer's Market. I can't believe people can see something like this from outside of Leilani. I'm guessing that's just the steam cloud lit up and seldom the fountaining any more due to the cone's height but still. It will be interesting what they end up doing about a viewing area/overlook like has been set up in parts of HVNP, but that's on government land where this is not. I have to wonder if some of the cones outside of Leilani Estates could provide a vantage point. Would think the height would make them safe. However the problem I see is that the VOG and SO2 that continues to drift in LE would be a roadblock to this.

On another take, I know F8 doesn't light up the sky like this every night but can't imagine how people who have stayed in LE can sleep at night with all the light coming into their windows. I have trouble sleeping with our bedroom being lit up at night when our neighbor forgets to turn out their outdoor side garage door lighting. Room darkening blinds I guess.

It's not as bright as the photos make it appear.  All the night photos have longer exposures, and thus any light source becomes far brighter relative to the dark.

No updates to Maps.

I did see this from Gabriele Grassi on fb Hawaii Trackers group who posted this overflow photo. Recognize it as a PGV cam location photo but the contextual info (date/time) was cut off. Was kind of curious to see a USGS map to see if it's shown yet or maybe read something about it in their Alert but not updated yet. There has been activity at F22 which is on the southeastern side of PGV to the left (with flows going towards Pohoiki, not the flow going towards Kapoho). This photo's overflow however would be the lava river going towards Kapoho.

I've been checking Mileka's fb page every so often. Since her "run" in with Talmadge (CD) at the Pahoa meeting last week I've noticed her posts have been what I'd characterize as toned down maybe, really not sure how to describe. Anyway I saw this combined video of G Brad Lewis and USGS footage of a tornado whirlwind that occured for about 10 minutes out of the blue above the channel near F8 on June 30. Very cool sight. Read the description (See More) for a complete look. Apparently not the only one that day.

Mileka also had this posted a few hours ago to her fb page. In part, "Hawaiʻi County Mayor Harry Kim has just signed a third supplementary emergency proclamation expanding his May 22, 2018 Supplementary Emergency Proclamation related to real property tax assessments in the areas of Leilani Estates, Lanipuna Gardens, Pohoiki Bay Estates and Kapoho Estates to include a larger area. Mayor Harry Kim has declared a state of emergency due to threat of imminent disaster on Hawai‘i Island, effective as of 7:30 AM July 2, 2018 and for at least the next 60 days. According to Mayor Kim, homeowners who are able to relocate from the affected area have not been able to have their homeowner’s exemption relocate with them for at least six months — which has placed an unnecessary hardship and inequity upon them. To relieve that Mayor Kim has suspended the period for claiming and applying a home owner exemption for anyone who has relocated from the affected area due to uninhabitability or isolation to a new property, which they intend to own and occupy as a principal home or residence."

I had a chance to watch Scott's interview with Amanda (fellow tour guide) about her experiences during this eruption. Her parents had to evacuate their home in LE. She relays what it was like to be doing a tour when the 5.something and 6.9 earthquakes happened (she was just leaving HVNP when the 6.9 happened). Also relays what other tour guides described to her that were in the Thurston lava tube then.

They discuss that every day except holidays (like this 4th) the escort people are at the barricades at 9am and 1pm and if there isn't a long line of cars residents from the evac area can get in (at least that was what Scott heard from I think Amanda's father?). Amanda talks about how this has affected her bosses who's house was covered by lava on Pohoiki Road and now their tourist business.

Amanda described living inside the evac area when the earthquakes and eruption happened and what it was that made her decide it was time to leave. Slow paced interview, with Scott's dogs around, but I found interesting to hear her perspective.

New video posted an hour ago from Gabe (H.I.S Survival). He talks about Pahoa, the recent meeting on the 30th with gov't officials about the Future of Puna. He says what he thinks will happen to LE and lower Puna. I would say I think this would differ from Scott's opinion. Gabe walks down to the corner of Malama and Pomaikai (we've seen this intersection many times) where F10 starts. While he posted this today and he doesn't say, I think video must have been shot Sunday morning given the rain and terrible SO2 conditions today.
