I had heard that the monitor inside Leilani Estates wasn't giving readings but there wasn't anything in the news I read that said why. From what the Mayor's representative stated (about 8:30 in) the $15K monitor inside LE was stolen. I had assumed it was a malfunction of some sort. This was a total shock to hear. Of all the places a monitor is most needed would be LE. No other info about the theft was provided. I would hope that the person/persons involved get caught and that interfering with emergency equipment where the public health is at risk like this and in a State Declared Emergency Zone comes with severe penalties and a good amount of jail/prison time. If it's being used by someone it would be great if it somehow could be traced back to them. My other says it was probably taken to sell for drug money. It will be interesting to see if any updates are published on this.

So Scott received his letter (since in the western half of LE assume it says uninhabitable) and mentions it in his morning chat video for 7/4. Also mentions Gabe (YT H.I.S Survival) getting his and Charles (YT Doing Hawaii) getting his. Scott's having his solar panel installation completed on July 11. He had everything completed except the panels on his roof and then the eruption occured and no one would or could get into LE so he's be anxious to get the job done. As he said despite the letter he has no plans to leave so moving ahead with the install.

Here's Charles' video regarding the Uninhabitable designation letter:

Lots of confused people as to the purpose of the letter and timing of it. I am surprised no one has specifically asked about these letters going out at this last Community Meeting. That and clarification on the banning of individuals and prohibition of taking photos even on your property in LE that apparently several people have been told was in place. Don't understand why these type of things are dealt with publically so what ever the policy is it's spelled out and everyone knows. Causes more confusion and anger among residents that are already under stress.

USGS updates:

Alert has been posted today, 7/4 at 8:53 am HST (11:53am PDT): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html  Not really much changes to report especially if you have been following the news here. The channel overflow at Kapoho Crater was mentioned.

New photos posted as of 7/4: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

This image of F8 was captured with a Mavic Pro drone from DOI/USGS Unmanned Aircraft Systems team. BTW the little side flow to the left of the immediate cone area where it pulls, was described by John as mini-8. Looking at footage and photos he believes there is lava erupting from a side vent there and adding to the river flow. This was something he described in the last video from the HUB posted above in this thread.

And current image from the PGV cam:

Gabe shoots video of the Pahoa Community Meeting (edited). Curious why he made no inquiry to Talmedge about the Leilani Uninhabitable Letter during Q & A session? There are comments on his YT Channel (H.I.S. Survival) asking the same question.     H.I.S Survival

There is a gentleman we get a brief glimpse of from behind that resembles Bo. Just before the guy with the neck brace asks his question. I've replayed that portion of the video several times, still can't determine if it was Bo?

Bo, I assume Osaka is steamy-warm.  I enjoyed brief stops in Himeji and Nagoya in April.

I'm disturbed by the theft of the air quality monitor, in part because it's a sort of thing that would be somewhat hard to sell, even on Ebay, without getting noticed.  Malicious idiot?  If such a piece of equipment disappeared, more looting must be going on.

Dave, well not quite steamy. With a typhoon right around the corner it's been overcast, wet and a bit cooler today. I guess that's one of those pesky "good news-bad news scenarios"! Oh, and I was in Himeji a couple of days ago. Very impressive (and it was a beautiful day!)

And someone stealing the air quality monitor is downright pathetic and despicable. I hope the person will be apprehended and charged ASAP!

Read this interesting article from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. A look back at Kalapana Gardens then and now today and a few people who own there. The article says that David Ewing of Pahoa's Sirius Coffee Connection cafe who was interviewed for the article sold his house about 2 years ago and moved his family to Leilani Estates to a home on an old cinder cone. Would that have been the now kipuka down at Kahukai? As far as I know, from the maps we've poured over in the past few months following the eruption, that's the only cone in Leilani Estates...or was, but with time and vegetation and weathering what was becomes transformed if you don't know it's past and maybe there are more that I didn't realize. Here's the article: http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/07/05/hawaii-news/people-returned-to-subdivision-buried-by-lava-in-1990-could-it-happen-again/

National Weather Service reported that there were over 1,000 lightning strikes during Monday's thunderstorm that formed over Leilani Estate's Fissure 8. The number was closer to 1,200. Wow. Heard it was pretty wild that morning and of course there was that horrible SO2 blanketing the area as a result of the thunderclouds above trapping the gases in. http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/2018/07/04/hawaii-news/volcano-update/lava-fueled-storm-produced-more-than-1000-lightning-strikes/

The Hawaii National Guard deactivated the Joint Task Force 50 partnership with the Guard and regular military that were called to assist with the lava emergency in lower Puna. Residents like Scott mentioned that the Guard was gone from the checkpoint that was at Hwy 130 and 132. That happened on Tuesday. http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/2018/07/04/hawaii-news/volcano-update/lava-task-force-deactivated-more-homes-are-lost/

Latest aerial photos from Hawaii County Civil Defense's Flickr account, 7/3. Majority of flyover photos/videos of remaining Kapoho Beach Lots and Kapoho ocean entry. Also included are views of Kapoho Crater, lower Puna, F8, PGV, Leilani channel area, Kahukai kipuka area, land where Honolulu Civil Beat's live cam was.

Lucy Lincoln Frost took a Blue Hawaiian helicopter ride yesterday over the Kapoho area and shared a number of photos on fb Hawaii Tracker group from her overflight. Sharing a few of those here. These are from the log jam you probably have heard about near Kapoho Crater where there was an overflow and the lava path took a divergent route around the previous channel path. She said these photos were from around 5pm HST yesterday. Be mindful in looking at the photos that many of the homes in Kapoho Beach lots shown were claimed during the night and Ikaika believes the remaining ones will be lost today.  If you watch Ikaika, John and Philip's talk today (posted above) the photos of this area will give you a better idea of exactly what they are concerned with in flow and direction.

5b3e9d77b70c9_kapohologjamareaoverflow-2

The Cemetary that the guys talk about is located on the right side of the green crater to the upper right of the flow. They speculate that if the flow stays in the direction below the crater they it will be okay. However if it breaks off and flows more northward along Railroad Avenue and around the other side of the crater (top in this photo) then the topography will likely place the cemetary in the flows path.

Images from the Hwy 130 traffic cams at the plated section. Just imaged to give a daytime afternoon reading. Dept of Transportation according to the Tues. Pahoa Community Meeting said they were removing some of the plates that only had minor cracking so you might notice some changes from prior images of the area.

On Highway 130, steel plates still cover cracks in the pavement near the 14-mile marker. The speed limit in the vicinity of the cracks was lowered to 25 mph, and the county warned residents that stopping on the road by the plates could be hazardous.

I haven't found the link to the USGS statement, but as read at the meeting, it means that USGS expects Kilauea to behave roughly as it has, for the next two months.  But there is a very unlikely (not zero probability) of much more violent activity, which might come with only rather short warning, to the point that people should be prepared to self-evacuate even before they get official messages.

In short, almost anything in Kilauea's violent history (notably the event 500 years ago) is possible, but there's no need for Volcano Village people to leave.  Just to be very wary and prepared for the worst.

Volcano House extended its closure from mid July to August 16.  That's pretty pro forma.

I'm almost done listening to the meeting video and what Dave-Vero has stated is what I understand as well. They referenced several times during the meeting that people should learn from what Leilani and Kapoho/lower Puna experienced in that sometimes you have more of a warning to be ready to leave and other times not. Emphasized to have your documents and important things thought out ahead of time, organized and ready to grab on your way out the door. You may not be able to come back to retrieve things.

For those who don't live in an area with potential natural disaster potential some of this stuff may be something you never had to think about before. I know from living in earthquake country our community preparedness training here was to have your kits with important docs/medications etc ready, have a family meet up plan and centralized contact person/s established. Keep your vehicles fueled or charged and ready to go. You are going to want to know where your family members are afterwards should you not all be together when the event happens and calling one or two established contacts will avoid confusion and miscommunication and unnecessary worry on your part. Have copies of important documents stored elsewhere off site should you need them later. We're told not to rely on cellphones, great if they work but chances are calls won't get out so knowing ahead of time where your family is to meetup for example can be very comforting during such times. I haven't seen the checklists that CD has for people there in volcano country but assume they are pretty much standard for emergency preparedness anywhere you live.

BTW this is the 11-page document on understanding the scenarious referred to (under the map on the HVO's webpage): https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/file_mngr/file-184/Summit%20scenarios_7-5-18.pdf

A few photos from this album date:

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

The photo below with the structures on the left is at Pomaikai and Malama (an end point of F10 -- which continues to run to the right where the SO2 has killed the vegetation. Believe Gabe (YT H.I.S Survival) said it runs something like 600 ft, across maybe 4 lots down there.

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

and a closer view of the structures shown above on the left. The red roofed structure is the one that has the ever widening cracks all through the ground area and I believe underneath that structure. Ikaika, Isaac Krakauer, Bo and Gabe have all shown photos of the land cracks there. The cracks are very evident from the air in this photo below.

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

An aside (above photo): Too bad the hill beyond (assume it's a former cone located outside of Leilani) couldn't be used as an observation area. The magma tubes run through the steam on the left (F24) towards the middle property and off in that same directional line to the right of the photo so not in the path of the hill beyond, so thinking it's in a safe zone. I'm sure however the question would be how to get people there.

The F8 cone looks very broad in this photo below. Left to right, the lava river, F8, side vents considered part of F8, F24.

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

That fissure area located behind F8 (considered part of it) is actually quite a large area. Hadn't realized that until now.

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

PGV and F22:

07/05/2018: Kilauea, HI - East Rift Zone Eruption Event

It was a pretty clear day and the clouds were more or less absent to cast shadows for many photos so there's some great views along the channel, PGV area, and pretty extensive photos within Leilani Estates. Photos from Kapoho as well.

The other day John (HUB talk) was talking about Mini-8 being that pooling off to the side of F8 and saying he believe it was an eruption point and not some diverted pooling from the flow of F8. Looking at this photo it does lay perfectly in the fissure line so can understand how he came to that conclusion. Also if you see video of it (easier at night), you can see the lava flowing out of the little lake and towards the F8 river flow.

BTW on the above video with Philip, there is a recording glitch in it where when he's showing the location to download the 11-page paper from the HVO site (already linked to above for you so you don't have to look for it) the video halts but the timecode continues. He was having trouble with his connection. I just moved the video a bit further forward in the timeline and it picked up fine.

Another interesting thing I'll mention is that I'm able to see the video with Philip in the window using my laptop but on my phone it shows up as video No Longer Available, yet there it is on my laptop :rage: . On the phone even clicking on View of Facebook doesn't work as it brings you to a log in. This is one of the many reasons I dislike facebook. Never have any trouble posting a YouTube video link. Sorry if you are relying on a mobile device and can't see this. I looked to see if Philip also posted this on his YT channel but he didn't or would provide that link.

Debbie - Philip usually uploads his video just before he goes to bed. His YT videos of the Hub Update always lags behind. I prefer You Tube as well. But I also hear it's easier to upload stuff on Face Book.

Gabe's (YT H.I.S. Survival) video of his Leilani Estates Homestead showing us the affects the SO2 gas on his beloved plants. Helicopters are loud and annoying during the video. Hopefully he does not have to hear it for the duration of daylight hours.
