As mentioned above in the latest post with Mick Kalber's video, he will be making fewer trips up for aerial photgraphy. Same goes for Andrew Hara who just made this post. For his full post about purchasing his photography and fund raising for Pu'uhonua o Puna (the HUB) and Hawaii Community Foundation through Lyman Museaum and Mission House from their sale, see this link

John Stallman, brother John from Ikaika's HUB talks with Philip Ong, will also be absent from the scene for a period of time. He posted this last night. BTW Philip's talk is posted above in this thread several post back as well as the link to the USGS .pdf document on the possible Summit scenarios.

And another post from one of the local photographers, Demian Barrios (fb Db Photo at Primary Focus, Instagram dbphotogallery), who is using his photos to fund raise for the evacuees. Hopefully the sales of photos over the months ahead will help fund the efforts of organizations like Pu'uhonua o Puna.

This reflective video posted by Demarcus Freeman on their family life on Kaupili Street before and after the eruption.

Here's the description for the video: "The first house to be destroyed in the 2018 eruptions on Hawaii Island was our rental business. The flow that took it covered the driveway, preventing us from reaching our home at the back of the property. The footage you see is a mix of stuff I shot of the kids over the past year, along with some of the video I shot on the day we hiked in to see if our home was still standing. A huge thanks to our friend Sean (guy in the video) who literally hiked into a volcano to help us get some of our things out. More information is available on our gofundme at: https://www.gofundme.com/kaupilifamily "

Since today I seem to be posting a few things with a retrospective look back, thought this drone footage (Phantom 4) from Byron Matthews posted back on May 4 but almost certain it was taken May 3 a few minutes before 6pm, when the first eruption in Leilani Estates happened would be appropriate. Another flyover included at 7:03pm when night was settling in. Just a reminder of how lush this area was only a little over two months ago. Screen capture illustrating this from Byron's video and with his video below. Really too bad drones got banned. We had some of the best videos of the actual lava sights from them and no helicopter/air sound. Seeing it like this kind of makes me want to cry at what's been lost and over the devasting impact it's had on the lives of so many people.

BTW Byron had also posted the amazing drone footage we had of the Fissure 8 area back in May. If you didn't see that here's the YT link for it.

Here's the fb USGS video from May 3:

I know Scott was saying he was experiencing really heavy rain this morning at his place, and I saw there was a flood advisory this morning posted for the fissure area (like these residents need any other issues to contend with). The advisory which was extended through the afternoon should be expiring soon. http://bigislandnow.com/2018/07/07/flood-advisory-heavy-showers-reported-at-volcanic-fissures/  Have to wonder if as long as F8 is erupting if these storms will become more the norm for Lower Puna. Those nearly 1200 lightning strikes the other day were unreal to think about.

----

A bit off the subject maybe but saw that SXSW Festival is looking for local Hawaiian talent to feature this year and will be in Kona on Tues, 7/24 from 6 to 8pm at Honua Studios for a meet-and-greet with interested talent. Participants will need to RSVP to attend the free event and can submit their work then. Hopefully some of our local photographers/filmmakers/videographers/musicians/programmers, etc. will see this Big Island Now announcement (please post to fb Hawaii Tracker group if you have a fb account) and submit their work. Would be nice to see them represented at the Festival. For more details: http://bigislandnow.com/2018/07/07/sxsw-festival-seeking-hawaii-island-creative-talent/

Speaking of programmers above in the SXSW mention, I saw that Philip Ong has an app in the Apple App store. And from a post made by Deborah Ray in the Hawaii Tracker group, 20% of the purchase cost will be going to relief efforts. Have to download it and try it out. Sounds like a Hawaiian Volcano in your pocket!

Maybe you guys remember the man who was trapped in his lot with fast moving lava cutting him off and was rescued by USGS and a drone and a flashlight? Well here's another part to his story that I just saw posted on fb Hawaii Tracker group (larger sized photo there).

5b41729b11627_johnandmissingcat-1.jpg.fe

Someone commented in the last hour that they know his name is John and had his number and left a message for him. They said he has been working to find his cat and rescue any others in the area that were left behind. They are trying to get a photo of his cat to check with animal shelters, share on Hawaii Tracker or to quickly identify his should it be found by someone else.  Another person just commented that they saw a kitten in the bushes off Leilani Blvd. This should serve as reminder to pet owners that they should keep a photo of their pets. Seeing how he has daily been checking for his missing cat says to me it's likely he probably was trying to catch it during the eruption and couldn't, waited too long and almost didn't get out himself. I remember hearing about the call for rescue coming over the police band or something like that. Terrible thinking someone was trapped behind the lava.

Years ago I had 3 cats at one point and when looking back later realized the only photo I had of them was when my parents were out and took a photo. Didn't have a cell phone back then so a bit different but even with a cell now I realize that there are palms I haven't grabbed photos of in awhile. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words...and better than someone's imagination. Hopefully we'll hear about a happy reunion in the days ahead.

Had decided the cam image on Halema'uma'u looked pretty cool...just a cliff essentially with no lava table edge at all. USGS says the crater wall behind the vent is about 280 feet high for perspective.

5b417bd8088ee_Halemaumau-1(1).jpg.b3aca2

Then before I closed the window for the camera, noticed a change and saw this!

Guessing maybe this just was after the larger collapse event they were expecting today. How fast things change around here.

Late-night update based on Scott Wilson of Aloha Skies Aviation aerial photographs showing the rapid advance of the southern flow lobe described in the previous update. John Stallman contributes remotely to the discussion of changes, and the possibility this flow may quickly reach Kua O Ka Lā area including Ahalanui Warm Pond and Secrets surf spot.

I think many of us were mesmerized by the blue flames emanating from the streets of Leilani during the early eruptions. So when I saw this article today come up in my news from a volcano in Indonesia that lights up blue in the nighttime found it share-worthy here. Flames as high as 16 feet. The Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia is in a range where sulfur is very high in the ground. I know some people theorized that the blue flames from the cracks in the Leilani were due to the asphalt burning and wonder if sulur is a component of it. More likely seeing this article, however, there was just sulfur present in that area where the cracks were; and we did see sulfur deposits on the ground later in many of these areas where the blue flames emerged and not always at road cracks. Here's this morning's article with some great photos and a video from Indonesia.

Interesting overlay method to show the distance of the lava from the warm ponds. I had thought the guys really didn't think was likely to happen because of the topography in that area and with the 1955 past flow. 5b42867207efe_warmponds-1(2).thumb.jpg.d

Interesting Scott said that this morning. Here's a post made on Hawaii Tracker group quoting USGS Associate Researcher Rick Hazlett yesterday about F8. We have constantly been reminded that the lava fluctuates during the day.

I know down at Kapoho Bay there's been the appearance that the upper flow is hardening but obviously the lava is finding routes out to the ocean and over land. I thought a few days ago the HUB guys thought that the lava near the coast had formed a ridge running parallel to the coast (I was thinking maybe due to lava inflation) and so they thought the lava was still finding a few ways out to the ocean there, but also being diverted along the coast area north and south of there. There was also that "apartment-sized" block of lava at the elbow at Kapoho Crater that was influencing the lava's path and backup overflow before the elbow. I kind of have been expecting more overflows to have occurred if F8 was still pumping out the same volume or maybe it has decreased in flow although for the most part USGS has said the flow remains about the same (until this post yesterday).

The guys (Philip Ong and John Stallman) felt the 20ft change in topography would be a significant factor. Now that so much lava has abandoned the northerly channels and is reestablishing, concentrating and converging into the southerly channel, Philip believes that the flow exceeds 20ft in height which overwhelmed the "barrier".

I haven't had a chance today to listen to his latest videos so thanks for explaining that @Moose. I am truly amazed at how much lava can inflate.

I have to say I feel like everything beautiful on the land is being wiped from the area. Even if the eruption slows down dramatically or ceases at some point, will the land devoid of trees likely affect weather of the area from Pahoa north? Assume the black lava will retain a lot of heat, the winds won't have a buffer (although the tradewinds usually come from another direction). No rainforest areas down there on the coast, maybe affect the type of crops that can be grown. I know we have a number of people on PT that are knowledgeable of weather patterns and agriculture and would love to hear their feedback on these land changes.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald had this story of an additional 11 micro units (like the ones at Sacred Heart) going up now in HPP. This is on Connect Point Church property. They are expecting they might be ready by end of July. If not mistaken I think this is different than the units that the HUB and Ikaika had broken ground on. Really nice to see the units going up and nice story by the newspaper and they are reporting that there are still 244 people sheltered at the Pahoa and Keaau community shelter locations.
