A photo story in today's Honolulu Star Advertiser about Mick and Ann Kalber returning to their home on Kupono to retrieve the remaining items that were left behind. A number of photos tell their journey in and the good bye they gave at the end, still hoping to be back there one day.

Philip Ong hasn't posted last night's HUB talk yet to his YT page--and actually not sure if there was one, guys may have used this instead in its place--but I did find this fb version of Ikaika and Philip after they were down at the coast. Ikaika describes the lava berm they saw as being about 50 feet high. They could tell there was something big going on further south of the front. Ikaika says the amount of lava flow there was massive. Huge areas of lava boils. Observed huge flows moving south pretty quickly (Pohoiki and Isaac Hale Beach Park would be next in line :() . Posting the url and the linked page so hopefully one or the other works for you. Need your help. Just a heads up I'll be sans computer for a few days. I know Moose will post when he can but would encourage others to help keep people informed as well throughout the day. I'll post some of my regular sources later tonight to make it easier to find news worthy material. Many of the tv channels and newspapers only carry occasional items, and these are mostly local Hawaiian sources. With so much still influx and events could happen at any time, I'm sure there is still a large contingent who are still following along. Thanks guys.

With Pohoiki down the coast from the now-overrun warm ponds, I saw this call go out earlier today to anyone who could help move these. Not sure how long they have been there but would be nice to see them saved but many have said that they should stay and if Pele wants to protect them she will. It would appear from this flyover view from today from Andrew Hara that the house in Leilani so near yesterday's overflow of F8, is still intact. Wonder if this is the house that I think Scott said in his morning trip down there had the lava stalled around their catchment tank.

This is an interesting go-fund-me campaign. If you've been following here for a while you probably know that Harry Durgin is one of the local photographers who has been supplying the community with eruption photography. Well he had an idea for a live lava feed camera and is trying to put it into the works but could use some help as he's doing it on his own. Here's a post that was shared on fb Puna lava updates. I'm sure he would be grateful for any contributions to get this going.

I have lived in Leilani Estates for 23 years and it's always been a very friendly community, but the current  "situation" has had an interesting effect. With only LE residents having legal access you see fewer people here, but the people you do see also inevitably tend to go out of their way to simply say 'hi' or engage in small talk or a longer conversation because everybody here is in "the same boat" so to speak. And the roadblock on Leilani Avenue at the Pomaikai intersection is turning into an unofficial gathering place, because that's where you can see the raging river of lava crossing Leilani Avenue, just three streets further down. This is especially true in the evenings when the view is truly spectacular. You meet people you already know and you meet people you have not known before, and you get to know them. I was there for a while this afternoon and early evening, and interestingly the first person I ran into was Howard Dashefsky of KHON2 News in Honolulu (first photo). He was being escorted out of the 'no go zone' by Bill Hansen of Civil Defense, and I had also met him before. We all had a nice chat. And then a number of neighbors began showing up. Great evening! :)

Wow those are amazing photos of the river down there tonight. Given the heat and volume and speed of that I can understand why CD is trying to keep people away from it. As this continues on and the channel ages, I would think the safety issues from the flow would be growing. This is so different than other flows I'm aware of from Kilaeua.

Hey, I even recognize Howard from the news stories I've seen him cover online! and Bill Hansen I've seen in a few videos when he was leading groups in. Glad you're connecting with neighbors there Bo. Don't know if you've watched the latest Community Meeting but I think 1/3 of the people there were from LE and permanent residents. Forgot what percentage said they were living in their home still.

I quickly scanned the Hawaii Tracker site for any new HUB video updates but didn't see anything new from this afternoon. I think Ikaika went out on the boat again this late afternoon evening and maybe Philip was on it with him, so you might want to look for that video and check it out. I saw someone mention that possibly a lava surge was going to happen around I think it was 4:42pm Thurs. as there was another collapse explosion and they were basing that time on the time it took the last lava surge to reach F8 and overflow LE. I'm sorry I really haven't been able to check on this tonight.

I've noticed a similar type of comradery after hurricanes in Florida and during a terrible flood when I live in the mid-west. I remember for the most part, people setting aside differences and making an effort to connect with others who are going through the same, I would say almost stages of grief over what has been lost, possessions, memories, etc. The human spirit is pretty amazing.

Here's the Ikaika video I mentioned last night. He's out there on the boat before sunsets. The amount of coastline affected with flowing lava is great, and he does a nice pan from one end to another. Lots of laze, and lava. Said the wall at the south end looked about 20 feet high. The water temp were he was at was 91F, said 10F hotter here than off HPP. He shows people on the boat where Pohoiki is.  Said Pohoiki itself is 1/2 mi maybe. The surf spot (bowls?) is maybe 500 yards. From the sound of it I don't think there was a HUB talk last night.  ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1881960195189841/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDI5MjQzMjQzOTA4MTYw/ )

I got a similar letter dated June 19th.

The following was part of an email from County of Hawaii Civil Defense dated June 26:

"To report your home or property damaged or destroyed, please call the Hawaii Real Property Tax Office at 961-8201. To report your home or property inaccessible due to lava isolation or mandatory evacuation, please call Civil Defense at 935-0031."

So I called the number on June 29th to ask about the email notice. I was told they were issuing letters for insurance or FEMA purposes -- some people have insurance that will pay for some short period of housing, or may be eligible for FEMA or other benefits, and this letter provides official notification a person can present for such purposes.

My property is within the evacuation zone, so I didn't think much about it until today when I received the letter dated prior to my call. Seemed odd. And "under evacuation" has a different meaning to me from "uninhabitable" which has a more permanent sound to it. What does it really mean? Is this for tax purposes? I had heard homes in the evacuation zone would not have to pay taxes (believe it when I see it). Is this for insurance and FEMA, for taxes, or is it a legal maneuver on the part of the County?

Could it be a mistake that Gabe received the letter? Or will everyone in Leilani Estates get one? I look forward to hearing from @Justin, who is very much in the safe zone of Leilani. I would not have expected these letters to go out to those in the safe zone. Need to know.

@Kim sorry, I missed this originally.  Yes, everyone in LE received one of these, and it is for FEMA purposes.  From what I've heard, however, FEMA hasn't given much credence to this letter, so I'm not sure of the point, other than to freak out a lot of people.

The latest thermal map shows the shift of lava southward.  https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_maps.html?mapId=512

This thermal map shows the fissure system and lava flows as of 6 am on Thursday, July 12. The fountain at Fissure 8 remains active, with the lava flow entering the ocean at numerous points in Kapoho. The channel overflow from July 9-10 created a new lobe that reached the ocean over the past day, destroying Ahalanui Park and the nearby charter school. A robust ocean entry plume was active at the location of Ahalanui Park. The black and white area is the extent of the thermal map. Temperature in the thermal image is displayed as gray-scale values, with the brightest pixels indicating the hottest areas.

A closer view of the new "island," which was estimated to be just a few meters offshore, and perhaps 6-9 meters (20-30 ft) in diameter. It's most likely part of the fissure 8 flow that's entering the ocean—and possibly a submarine tumulus that built up underwater and emerged above sea level.
