Fissure 8 Video by Gabe (YT H.I.S. Survival)

I'm not a scientist so this is just my uneducated observation. In the video you can see that fissure 8 pulses and the amount of lava coming out can change.

Just saw that Dane DuPont gave a shout out to Gabe's video. Hadn't had a chance to get caught up on all the videos I missed yet but this one sounds interesting. Heading to watch it now. Can't wait to hear the geologist/volcanologist possible explanations for the differences.

Wow just watched. Heading over to YT and giving him a like on this! Amazing progression and great view. Hopefully the lava police won't triagulate his location and cite him for images of the lava (kind of joking here).

Here are some comments:

The scariest thing in the world is a knock at the door & the person says "I'm from the government and I'm here to help".

Not safe enough to send inspectors in, but safe enough to deny assistance, which one is it?

Video from Will Bryan who was filming on the boat when they were pelted by the lava bombs, tephra etc.  Kind of hard to see in the early morning light but can't miss when it explodes. Sure most people on board were recording or taking pictures at the time. Will sounds like he was among the luckier ones with only minor injuries. Saw a link posted to this 7/13/18 article from The Geological Society of America entitled "Kilauea: Science Behind the Headlines". Haven't finished reading it yet but wanted to share. One of the first early articles to be written on the thinking of Kilauea's workings and surely not the last.

I think a few here read the story from Myles Hewette on "The White Car in the Yard". The author posted this message earlier today about it. Noticed when Medium ran it as a cover story they used a new close up photo of the car and Hawaii County Civil Defense was credited for the aerial view of the lot with the car (this was from their Flickr account). If you are not familiar with the story, it's about one Puna resident's loss of his "stuff" and the emerging feelings about it.

Explosive eruption, 5.4, happened up at Halema'uma'u and surge down at F8 is expected around 1:15pm-1:45pm HST (4:15pm-4:45pm PDT). Imagine there will be LE viewing crowd down by Leilani/Pomaikai shortly. (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10156195283800622.1073741999.665760621&type=3 )

I was at the Leilani/Pomaikai intersection from 1:15 pm until 2:25 pm HST. First of all, VERY few people there. A couple of Civil Defense & USGS people coming through but only a handful of others, including Scott, who stopped by for about 15 minutes, giving us an opportunity to chat. And the "surge" - total non event. If yesterday's mid afternoon show was a "10" on a scale of 1-10 then the "surge" when I was down there barely registered a "1". :( And it wasn't even pulsing. Just a fairly steady stream of lava, that POSSIBLY increased in volume every now and then, but definitely nothing dramatic. Far from it. Yep, just the usual boring lava river - we're definitely getting jaded here! :mrlooney:

Haven't checked overflight videos/photos yet but saw this photo from Scott Wilson of F8 taken Sunday of the overflow at mini-F8 and it was quite large. Had heard Ikaika, Philip and Bruce Omori in a video @Moose linked to talking about it so was curious to see it. Stayed on old flow but looks like it came somewhat close to some untouched land at the bottom of the photo. Fortunately it happened on that side of F8.

Speaking of overflight videos, here's Mick Kalber's Sunday, July 15 flight. Other video sites may have shown parts of it in their footage but here it is in it's entirety. The lava flowing from mini-F8 during the surge is very interesting to watch and see how the overflow developed.

As for Hawaii County Civil Defense Flickr album updates, there was a 3 video album created for 7/13 on the summit and east rift zone: https://flic.kr/s/aHskEsJw5Y

and a 7/14 album: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmp7xc1a

Photos below from Hawaii County Civil Defense. Just a massive delta of lava at the ocean.

@bgl, came upon this video from Jason Twillman down on Noni Farms Road who was filming down the channel by his farm. The channel was moving pretty quickly. He was there with the geologists and they said the surge came through at Noon and lasted about 5 hours (about 1:20 in the video). Wonder what happened in your section of the flow. BTW about 3:30 into Jason's video he says they are looking to get some live webcams up on this section down by Noni Farms Road so it can be viewed 24/7. Said there are still a lot of people living in the general area and would benefit from being able to check on the condition of the river should it get blocked and started overflowing again.

Be careful over there. Including on those lava tour boats. This one took a hole in the roof. A lady had to go to the hospital with a broken leg. Ouch.

Slide 1 of 103: This photo provided by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources shows damage to the roof of a tour boat after an explosion sent lava flying through the roof off the Big Island of Hawaii Monday, July 16, 2018, injuring at least 23 people. The lava came from the Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting from a rural residential area since early May. (Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources via AP)

What caused the explosion? Certainly not just lava entering the ocean?

Littoral explosions in this case are caused by hot lava hitting cold water and the resulting flash of superheated steam causing an explosion sending the lava outward, sometimes upwards but also to the sides. Steam, hot lava, tepha (volcanic glass particles of various sizes) at high speed. Early reports said a 40-lb lava bomb struck the young lady in the leg with wounds to her thigh and pelvis. BTW there was also lightning from this explosion. In the steam cloud over the water and interestingly apparently in the water before hand as evidenced by the video below. As the poster said Paradise helicopter pilot on Sunday (day before this incident) doing a flyover saw lightning under the water shortly before an explosion occured.

Here's the post on fb Hawaii Tracker group that Nina Cherry posted from KITV's video.  This BTW is a very long video and captures the reactions of passengers as the explosion hits the boat and them just so you are aware before playing. Today's article from Big Island Now indicates that one of the topics at the meeting will be scenarios relating to a possible major explosive event at Halema'uma'u.  http://bigislandnow.com/2018/07/17/community-briefing-to-address-possibility-of-major-summit-explosion/?t=1531861258

That's the one I'm referring to Moosey. The explosion seems to have some inner dynamics working beside lava just meeting salt water. That thing's like a bomb from a war!

Littoral explosions along the flow here are not unusual and have happened at other lava entry flows in the past. There are a number of videos on YouTube over the years showing them and are featured on most lava tour boat websites. Very dramatic and clearly dangerous if within range of the explosion. Littoral explosions can happen similarly from another sources where there's a dramatic temperature difference. Ikaika was saying that recently the flow at the ocean has picked up and had seen a few of these explosions and he personally did not think the USCG should have changed the distance regulations like they did right before this happened. Maybe the additional volume of lava or it's temperature is a factor (more of the channel has been crusting over so keeping the flowing lava more insulated. As mentioned in the Star-Advertiser article, they have now enlarged the safety zone for the tour boats putting them on equal footing with non-tour boats in the area at 300 meters.

I haven't seen any mention but wonder how scientists would equate this to a TNT explosion for example.

And there are internal gases in the lava itself. It's why it is so porous when cooled. Created by all the tiny gas bubbles. The gases are one of the driving forces pushing the magma up through fissure 8. But the explosive occurrence was manifested by the explanation Debbie posted above.

BTW your photo of the geologists on the lava levee really illustrates how high that wall is with the flow.
