This was all done since late yesterday afternoon (see my post). And just in general, probably a good idea. If you don't do this, no way to know whether the cracks are widening over time. Now they have a reference.

(This is in reference to my two photos of the cracks in the Leilani/Pomaikai intersection).

I'm assuming most of you here where here from the beginning of the eruptions in Leilani Estates and then followed along as the fissures near PGV opened up. That said just saw this post get added by Joseph Anthony who was with Civil Beat at John and David's house by F17 and F20-22. You probably watched the daily cam footage of F17 which was really spectacular for quite a period of time. This was the erupting cone that shot the lava bomb off at the house by the palms where Mr. Clinton nearly lost his leg. Joseph is sharing his photos of the house Mr. Clinton defended nearly with his life and thought you guys might like a follow up. 66 photos and 2 video. He titles the album "The House of a Thousand Lava Bombs".

WEATHER ALERT Looks like some bad weather heading towards Pahoa. I feel for the people who weren't comfortable with the Shelter situation and have all their belongings in the tents outside at the shelters. Not what these evacuees need at this point.

Not sure the status of HUB talks, don't believe there have been any for a while. Did see this video from Philip Ong on the flow rate comparison.

During the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea near Kapoho, high and low flow in a lava channel are superimposed for comparison. People are visible in the upper right for scale. This branch of the braided lava river originating from Fissure 8 was temporarily inactive during a period of fluctuation in output from that vent, seen flowing at most 12 hours previous from the air.

From early morning reports on fb Hawaii Tracker group air quality as expected is not good in LE. Kris posted this from his house.

And there were overflows last night down towards PGV when Lockey got this screen grab at around 4am HST. There was a 5.4 earlier.

However settled back in it's channel by about 6am HST with just some fresh lava emitting some light.

Mick Kalber when posting his 7/16 overflight video (see above in thread) added this on fb Hawaii Tracker group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiitracker/permalink/1034698496695968/ ): "The braided channel of the lava river has lost one of its tributaries... forcing lava down one side... this may create more overflows over the next few days downslope near Kapoho Crater. The newly created island continues to grow off the eastern coast near what was once Kapoho Bay. Upwellings of lava below the sea created the small island, which is now a peninsula, as a black sand beach has connected it to Hawaii Island. Just five days ago, Ahalanui Beach Park (Hot Pond) and Kua O Ka La Charter School were covered by lava from the current LERZ eruption of Kilauea volcano. Pele's newly created ocean entry is just a half mile from Pohoiki... but is only slowly moving south toward the surf beaches, park and boat ramp there."

Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard had this press release on her website about the US House of Representatives approving $4.7 for USGS Volcano Hazaards program to be included in an appropriation package tonight. As you may know the USGS had to move out of their facilities at HVNP due to the earthquake damage and has been sharing space with Univ of Hawaii Hilo at their location.

I had not been aware of this section for mini-timely updates on the USGS HVO site. Saw someone mention the overflow on Nohea in the news and found the HVO area. So far no further info. The additional overflows downstream on both sides probably includes the PGV area shown above in this thread from around 4am HST.  With the weather today wonder if they'll be able to get a helicopter or drone up for an aerial view. Good website area for a bookmark though. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/eruption_updates.html

Fairly high clouds today and visibility is decent so shouldn't be a problem with either helicopter or drone. Yeah, air quality is a bit funky but that doesn't affect visibility in the immediate area.

I hope you guys got a chance to see all the 66 photos and 2 videos he originally had posted with this webpage. Really something to see. I noticed this morning that on fb Hawaii Tracker group his original post there said something like unavailable or taken down and sure enough clicking the link provided here shows the text but all the great photos are gone. He did put up 2 new ones of what looks to be an aerial view with the houses circled along with the fissures. Kind of nice to see that and they are fairly close up photos. I know people on the fb group have been asking what ever happened to the lava bombed house and I've been curious to catch a good view of what the area looks like today.

ALERT: I debated about posting this but since I know some of our Leilani residents have moved to other subdivisions off Hwy 11 and Pahoa area, thought this was something important to know for your safety if you are in that area and/or going into or staying in your home there today. A wanted man from Las Vegas area shot and killed a 10-year veteran officer during a traffic stop on Hwy 11 near Kukui Camp Road in Mountain View early this morning. Roads are cordoned off since then but they have not yet located him. Here's an article from Hawii Tribune-Herald with his photo, info on the shooting, the officer who lost his life, and a warning to anyone in that potential area. The shooter was wanted on an outstanding no-bail warrant and multiple all-points bulletins. Waiki, who has distinctive tatoos on his neck is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Big Island Video News (CD) verified at 6am HST that addtional structures were taken by lava overflow today. No further info on where. Sorry to hear this happened again.

Video from last night's Pahoa Community Meeting at the High School.

USGS portion. Think this is video 2 of 2 but not labeled.

Here's the text that accompanied the video if view on the Big Island Video News website:

(BIVN) – During Tuesday’s public meeting concerning the eruption of Kilauea Volcano held at the Pahoa High School cafeteria, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory deputy scientist-in-charge Steve Brantley compared the ongoing activity to past events, calling it “unprecedented in scope and size” in the past 200 years.

The summit of Kilauea Volcano has already seen the largest collapse in volume in the past 200 years, Brantley said, adding that the activity thus far is similar to activity observed in the 19th century.

On the lower East Rift Zone, where Fissure 8 is currently sending a channel of lava through Leilani Estates and into the ocean, Brantley said we are seeing the most voluminous eruption in over 200 years.

We are also seeing the highest eruption rate, and the highest SO2 emission rates ever measured at Kilauea, Brantley said.

The ongoing eruption on the lower East Rift zone has lasted for 80 days, so far, and erupted an estimated 450 million cubic meters (mcm) of lava. Brantley compared those numbers to three other eruption events on the lower East Rift Zone:

1840: 26 days, 205 mcm

1955: 88 days, 81 mcm

1960: 37 days, 122 mcm

The presentation also touched upon recent changes to the lava channel, the slow southward advance of lava along the coast in the direction of Pohoiki, and present activity at the summit.

Totals 408 mcm vs. current eruption of 450 mcm. That is more lava than those previous listed eruptions combined :o  :interesting:

Not sounding hopeful for Pohoiki. Brian Pessman(sp?) was also interviewed about his experience the other day as photographer on the boat hit by lava during the littorial explosion. Nice to see the Periscope feed in landscape mode.

If you want to view the guys' morning overflight (about 30 minutes) here's a link to the Periscope video. About 11:20 into the video is footage approaching Isaac Hale Beach Park. Futher in the video they make another pass.

I follow Tim O'hara on his YT channel and he posted this video from the harbor where Shane's boat was docked. Shows the type of damage the boat took. Shane told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald that the littoral explosion happened as they were leaving the area and so I guess not surprised to see the damage to the boats motors. The photographer, Brian, who was with Mick Kalber and Bruce Omori said he was sitting in the first few rows of the boat and while he didn't get injured people in the rows behind him did.

Interestingly, back on June 24, Tim posted the video below. Not only does it show the Hot Spot (so you can see before it got damaged) but the Lavaone boat heading out for the ocean entry.

In retrospect, the titling on this segment was a bit eerie to see when it popped up on the video.

I'd be grateful about the dead grass, think of having to deal with 5 foot tall grass when you move back in after the eruption.

The palms look pretty green, all will be well as long as the lava stays away.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Flickr album update as of Monday, 7/16.  https://flic.kr/s/aHsmjojGNd

Here's a few photos from Monday's album. Reminder that many of these photos on the Flickr album can be zoomed in once or twice for a bettter view than shown here.

Notice the deformation in the cone in this photo. There has been discussion about some cracks during the past week. USGS has indicated that the height of the cone as last measured is now around 120 feet (as opposed to 180 feet at its high point previously).

20180716_141815

Cell tower from John and David's house (Civil Beat live feed house by F17 & F20-22). Think at one time in the beginning we heard that the house was 300 feet above the land below. Looking more level now with a number of overflows on the back side here.

20180716_142137

In this photo you can see PGV mid-center with the remaining homes on the hill on the kipuka to the right of it (Kahukai near Leilani). At the very bottom left corner there is a street visible with lava surrounding a roof. Not sure if the roof is orginally orange or if it's due to rusting from the gases. This photo appears to be at the "elbow" pooling bend in the channel flow closest to F8. Not sure if this is still in Leilani Estates or not, maybe part of Pohoiki Road?

20180716_142008

Here's a view closer to F8 at the elbow and believe the house shown here is in Leilani, maybe Nohea.

20180716_141953

Photo below showing channel flow when one of the braided portions became blocked and overflows resulted. F8 is at the far top of the photo.

20180716_142334

I wish these photos in general, which have some of the best resolution we get to see, were released sooner than they are to better tie them to events that are happening. Hard to remember what was happening way back on Monday already and for some things may have changed on the ground with that last overflow we heard about on Nohea. Still looking for info on that and any other new surge info within LE.

Andrew Hara did an overflight and Ryan Finlay just did this update of Pohoiki after seeing some of Andrew's photos that he shared.

There is an aerial photos of LE and F8 where you can see the houses at the foot of the overflow. I know those with houses that might have been impacted in that area have been anxiously waiting for images to be released. Not sure if this one is helpful. It looks like it was a pretty clear day there so hopefully we'll see more of that area inside LE as Andrew publishes more of his overflight photos.

Residents in the area should be on alert and not approach but call authorities or Crime Stoppers if not wishing to leave a name. Hawaii News Now recently updated their article today: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38673493/manhunt-continues-for-man-accused-in-puna-officers-fatal-shooting

A little bit of an update on the viewing site proposal from Hawaii Tribune-Heraldhttp://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/07/19/hawaii-news/finding-safe-lava-viewing-site-proves-challenging/  and this from Hawaii News Now focusing more on the Pahoa businesses push: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38679864/hawaii-businesses-seek-lava-viewing-site-to-reignite-tourism  Not sure how I think giving tourists SO2 masks will work. The filters need to be changed, the masks should be properly fitted and I don't think you'd want to share these devices with other tourists from a health standpoint.

I do wonder if the cone continues to deform lower and the lava just continues to erupt out of the ground at the same rate, will there be anything for people to see from a distance. Not like the large cone with fountaining lava it was producing earlier on (thankful so many residents got video back then). Read that the Pohoiki Road location site once under consideration after clearing trees for it turned out to not be ideal as the flow couldn't be seen Plus in many people's minds there was the bend there and big potential for outbreaks at that juncture. I'm thinking a location high on a hill or old cone would be the best choice but would require a lot of prep and high powered binoculars or something like that and not sure all the higher elevations have a view people would want to see. Best I've seen yet is where Gabe has positioned himself recently. Still think setting up something on the cell tower in LE if they get power to it would be a great camera location that could be broadcast elsewhere for a more zoomed in look.

I did find these aerial photos taken yesterday by Jon Servaites on a Paradise Helicopter ride around 1:30pm that he shared on Hawaii Tracker group. Looked pretty cloudy and overcast (so turn up your brightness to see better) but he did get six images of the overflow area in LE from F8. Here's the link to his post along with the images below from the LE area. ( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10160637740815187&set=pcb.1035912229907928&type=3&theater&ifg=1 )

I can see from the photo below that the "elbow" is within LE. A bit further down the flow and to the left is the Y intersection.
