Mentioned Harry Durgin's live feed camera project before which had been funded during a go-fund-me campaign. Looks like he's got it up running and testing out already!

Two images from a time lapse video he did from the location. Link to video--> ( https://www.facebook.com/dane.dupont.731/videos/pcb.1039732709525880/182105009325315/?type=3&theater&ifg=1 )

And while the cam battery pack needs replacing here's a partial image from the actual camera. Going to be nice quality.

Also saw a comment that Jason Twillman posted in the last hour that the County is reviewing and discussing his proposal (cam done jointly with Honolulu Civil Beat from that home's porch, image of it beow). Said they should hear back this week.

What was most interesting about this video was his discussion with a USGS geologist about 3:28 in. The were talking about the summit collapse. She said that the seismologist who is working on that what he does see is that as the time extends between events, he sees more dialation of the dike. It means that the dike that's feeding the magma, because there's a longer time between it, there's it seems to make the dike push out more. So when the event happens (the collapse), the volume just has to go somewhere and it pushes or dilates the dike and we're seeing surging after the fact.

Oh this is the Go Pro set up in the field and see he put croqui sounds in the background. Video came out really nice! Love the colors of your morning skies there which I'm sure to a big part are do to the eruption that provides the steam clouds to bounce the light off of.

OMG must be a surge going on.... last few images! From Harry Durgin's Lava Cam ( http://lavacam.org ). This is pretty scary or it just normal for nighttime flow/surge down there? Not even sure if there is a surge or just pulse. Assume that's a USGS geologist or CD personnel sitting there in that vehicle.

Philip Ong's quick (10 min) evening update after M5.5 collapse event at summit. Pretty wide felt and some reported rumbling sounds as well. Surge expected. Connection last night is a bit spotty at times but when video halted it does pick back up after a number of seconds. With regard to the USGS outlook on the eruption, I am in no way surprised.  Considering the collapse of the summit crater and the line of old craters between fissure 8 and Hale Ma'uma'u, this seems to fall along a trend.

I have been predicting that Fissure 8 would be the new permanent outlet for Kilauea since early June, I guess this just adds to that prediction.  I know this is very hard for everybody living in the area, but I hope this USGS report gets people in the mindset to get out if they can perceive the threat.  If you're South or East of Fissure 8, or on the near north side, it's only a matter of time (weeks, or months) until you're under a new lava field.  I think anybody who can look "up" at the flow should take a moment to think how quickly that red river can move and that eventually it will.

This eruption is already (volumetrically) larger than all previous eruptions since the 1800's combined.  Recently the eruption surpassed 1/2 cubic kilometers of material erupted.  It will be awe-striking to see how much more pumps out of that hole.

Latest Mick Kalber overflight video, from Sunday 7/22. There is some fairly close up footage of homes near F8 near the end of the video.

Since before noon my time this has been pretty much the look from Durgin's cam. The area in the foreground is heavily cloud covered and getting little light...nothing wrong with the camera in case you think only part of the image is captured. Time is HST.

Another sad day for Puna. Looks like Pohoiki is gone, or within minutes of disappearing. Lava took a bad turn and advanced quickly late today. Here is Ikaika's heartbreaking explanation as the lava is within 50 yards of the boat ramp after having advanced several hundred yards south today.

Popular photographer Clark Little has an elegant specimen photo at Instagram from his Paradise Helicopters flight, and also an Instagram Story.  The guy was carrying two Nikons, one with quite a long lens.  I think that answers questions about what to bring.

A collapse explosion at 6:41am at Halema'uma'u summit. M5.5. About 34 hr interval from last. Surge at F8 maybe in 1 hour. Let's hope Pohoiki can survive this one too. LE and northward should look out for any overflows.

Durgin's cam is posting a message that the battery needs changing and will do so asap. Hopefully we'll be able to see surge come through in a bit.

Just looking at the image closer up and it looks pretty lit up inside the cone there. Been watching the images every 2 minutes for a while now and F8 is going pretty good.

Something else I found interesting in the photo is there looks like a very tall, long white "netting" that extends from one side of the photo to the other. You can really see the net sections  to the right of the tall trees on the left and then follow the upper edge down the road to the right. Didn't notice this before.

5b57744d97016_durgincam-1(14).thumb.jpg.

and 2 minutes later...

5b57748d2294f_durgincam-1(15).thumb.jpg.

and 2 minutes later. The lava inside the cone has been visible since at least 8am HST when Durgin's camera's battery was replaced. Definitely qualifies as surge.

5b577557cac0a_durgincam-1(16).thumb.jpg.

BTW they upgraded the magnitude of the collapse to a M5.6.

Harry Durgin is working on improvements to his cam set up and researching other sites for additional locations for cams. I think this would be great and give people more of an opportunity to have an eye on the lava in their area. With the height of the channel walls so high, getting a view of the actual channel will be a challenge. With the current cam, you can see the current state of the erupting lava and the integrity of the levee wall there (overflows).

In the news:

These guys gave a number of interviews after their tour boat was hit by the littoral explosion recently. Today seeing a new article from AP that is being carried by a few news outlets, this one published by Hawaii News Now shortly before midnight last night.  http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38712754/hawaii-tour-passengers-recall-molten-rock-hitting-their-boat  and they are also in an article in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser: http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/07/24/breaking-news/lava-boat-passenger-there-was-nowhere-to-hide/

Do find it interesting that of the dozens of people on the tour boat that morning, this couple is the one I keep seeing in the press.

----

Puna evacuee dogs are finding new homes on Maui: http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/07/24/breaking-news/displaced-volcano-dogs-find-new-homes-on-maui/

----

A number of people on social media have called out the DNLR for this article that is making it's rounds in the news sources for public shaming with a photo the 3 people cited for lava viewing. From KHON2:  https://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/eight-more-people-cited-for-loitering-in-eruption-zone/1320844904  The issue of sea turtles in the protected cove areas along the coast being boiled alive instead of rescued ahead of time was also raised against them. There is footage of this occuring which is hard to watch. The DNLR, under public pressure I'm sure, issued this response: http://bigislandnow.com/2018/07/24/dlnr-responds-to-reports-of-sea-turtles-trapped-by-lava/  which Ryan Finlay posted on Hawaii Trackers group along with his response: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155924635395749&set=gm.1042295855936232&type=3&theater&ifg=1

It's Tuesday and there will be another Pahoa Community Meeting at Pahoa High School in the cafeteria tonight regarding updates from CD, other agencies and the USGS. The meeting starts at 5pm. Didn't see a post on Big Island Video News like I usually do but found this mention on CD's facebook page for this regular monthly meeting. The meeting should appear on Big Island Video News' site tomorrow (and will be posted here for convenience). I hope they include the residents Q&A period which they don't always seem to film.

Hawaii County Civil Defense updated their Flickr photo/video album as of Monday, 7/23: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmjGwCTs  You can zoom in a few times on some of the images.

This album contains a few images of Halema'uma'u similar to this one along with an overflight video.

20180723_111846

Of the lava flow at the coast and approaching Pohoiki yesterday. The channel in the majority of the photos in the album appear to be at a low stage, but we know that a surge went through and sent a large volume of lava down channel that reached the coastline last night.

20180723_115811

20180723_114406

Interestingly no photo of Isaac Hale Beach Park to indicate the distance of the lava to it.

From Leilani Estates, the back side of F8's cone which you don't see often in images.

20180723_113513

This photo below shows how deformed the cone has become and also the steaming fissure area south of Malama Street. Don't think I've ever seen F8 looking quite like this before.

20180723_113608

No closeups of neighborhood shots. But I found this photo below fascinating from a gentle general land shaping perspective. And also nothing to really see for many miles. Would this taken from the forest down by Railroad Avenue in Kapoho and looking back at F8 in the distance? I wish the photos were annotated with location description.

Current image from LE of F8 on lavacam.org. Seeing these last few days of images from Harry's cam, hard to believe that this (lava, smoke/steam, light from the lava) is what has become the norm lately no matter when you check in 24/7. Somehow videos and photos don't quite paint the same reality of this day in and day out.
