The amount of dedication, work product and stamina that Harry Durgin shows is A-Mazing. Leilani Estates and Puna is so lucky he lives here and cares about his community and shares his talent with all of us. He's one part of a great Hawaii Tracker group team through out this eruption.

Saw this fascinating post by his wife Mouse-Marie who tagged along to help with his "project". Had to share with everyone here.

As a Calif resident who sees wildfires affect the State each summer/fall season, wanted to include this news story on one of Hilo's own who died protecting Calif residents near the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park. Brian Hughes was captain of a Hotshots firefighing group, these are elite teams of highly trained, brave hardcore firefighters, and his death is a big loss to his fellow firefighters and all residents of Calif. Our local CBS San Francisco station had this brief story about Brian, the Ferguson fire and a video of the highway procession honoring him. Sad to say I've seen a few of these processions in our area along Hwy 101 over the years.

I wanted to send a shout out to Hawaii Trackers' Philip Ong (YT lavapip) for continuing to update his YT channel with eruption videos from the HUB. His talks are always educational.

I've noticed he's current now with today's 7/30 overflight video with Bruce Omori being added in the last hour.  If you appreciate his adding them to his YT account, be sure to give the videos a like and add a comment if you wish, sure he would appreciate it. I know not everyone can find these HUB videos or easily watch the fb ones if you are not a fb user and I for one appreciate his taking the time to make these accessible to all. Plus this YT location for storage of the videos makes it super easy to find past ones that you might have missed. I've also noticed that when I watch the linked to Ikaika and Philip videos through fb I get a message on my laptop saying this site is using a lot of power and I might want to close it LOL. Doesn't happen while watching videos on YT, and I can enlarge them full screen without the app crashing on me.

New album added for Hawaii County Civil Defense's Flickr account. For today, 7/30.  https://flic.kr/s/aHsmnoXJER

A few images from it to share.

I think this place down by Kapoho Crater, like the last roof/structure I had been watching for a while is still there. Makes you wonder why everything around it gets taken why this has so far been skipped.

07302018 (8)

Isaac Hale Beach Park dock and house. More photos and video of the immediate area in album.

07302018 (4)

Brush fire area.

07302018 (11)

Had hoped for more from that area and not sure homeowners can tell much from the above.

Did notice hot red lava in some of the channel overflows. Only 13 photos and 1 video posted to this album. Maybe more to come or that's it.

----

BTW if you missed hearing Philip and Bruce Omori's video from this morning, Philip indicated that Mick Kalber was under the weather this morning and didn't fly so don't expect any vimeo updates for now.

Ken Boyer's video takes you to "Experience Volcano Hawaii, LLC" meeting in Volcano at Ira Ono's place, Volcano Garden Arts  (he is also owner of Cafe Ono) in Volcano Village. Walk around the property, see the studio there, and listen to the Volcano business people's meeting about the future. Mayor Kim was there and was asked to give a little improptu speech. As the meeting was wrapping up he also stepped up to give an update on Hwy 11 conditions. They are apparently getting worse and he said motorcycle and bikers should be very careful especially. They are working on a by-pass and ask for people's patience as they work through the changing conditions. ( https://www.facebook.com/K.BryanHI/videos/2045140415519036/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDQ4OTg5NDI4NjAwMjA4/ )

Before calling it a night, checking Durgin's lavacam. Anyone have any idea why there are frequently what seems to be bursts of light lighting up the channel? Here are a sequence of grabs from the camera tonight to illustrate.

This might be during a pulse perhaps. Not from a surge though as the last 5+ summit collapse explosion occured almost 32 hours ago. We might be due for one soon but it hasn't happened yet.

Morning message posted by Pu'uhonua o Puna (the HUB). They had already announced meal service was ending at the end of July (today), this doesn't come as a surprise. Goes hand in hand with the National Guard pulling out, the end of regular media news briefs, fewer overflights, fewer news stories from the area, etc. The HUB certainly has been a lifeline for a lot of evacuees and served as the meeting place for affected residents and the Hawaii Tracker team of guys who have updated the community of what was happening beyond what we were hearing from USGS and CD.

The HUB will be on break starting Wed. 8/1, tomorrow to reorganize and will reopen on Monday, 8/13. The revised schedule will be: HUB will be OPEN every Mon. & Fri. Only, 10am to 8pm. Please read their entire message. And if you know of anyone still in need of food assistance the State has stepped up with a special D-SNAP program specifically for those affected by the eruption, so pass the info onhttp://bigislandnow.com/2018/07/23/food-assistance-soon-available-to-those-affected-by-eruption/

Flash back in time to when the fissures were just starting to erupt down by John Davidson's house (F17, F20-22 etc). John added these videos (some of them very short) taken from his phone when all this was very new to him and you can tell he's kind of trying to mentally come to terms with the reality before him. These videos he took on the ground near the fissures, not from his house. So hard to believe all of that green pasture and farm land down there is now all buried under who knows how many feet of lava.

The PGV camera has not updated since the last image I posted from 18:03:02. The Hawaii Tracker group including Ryan Finlay believe the fire might have taken out this camera. That would leave Durgin's camera as the only one at all showing F8.

Ryan Finlay said he put in a request to USGS to make the cameras they have by fissure 8 live. Said they have others that have incredible views but they aren't live. ....really? if true why wouldn't they be using these since this area is way more active than anywhere else almost?

The end of the USGS PVG cam feed. Last image captured. Lasted about an hour after I checked in on it. No mention on the HVO cam website where the image is still posted about it's demise. Thankfully we have a view from Harry Durgin's of F8 but the USGS cam did provide a wider view of everything from over Lanipuna Gardens, Kahukai kipuka to western Leilani and the steaming fissure in between.

People aren't sure what it means, may just be a lull as we are due for another M5+ summit collapse event. Also mentioned when the channel starts to dry up that's when there can be overflows. Anyway we are 34 hours since the last M5.3 and people are expecting something to happen soon.

I frequently check in, especially around the large collaps time, on the screens on VolcanoYT channel site on YT. Found them way back when Civil Beat had started staying and John and David's house. They were using Civil Beat's camera feed and now see they are using Harry Durgins. Before the end of the USGS PGV cam failed, they were using that frequently. Here's their website if you are interested.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIEnMyl-6Qo

Right now the crater is super clear and calm.

Dallas Koons subsequently posted this note to his post: "Despite this report, Bruce Omori tells us he flew over fissure 8 an hour ago and it was still raging and lava river still flowing. He says levels are lower but still plenty of lava."

Image from Durgin's cam as of about 6:57pm HST.  (Harry was out moving the camera today and hasn't added back the date/timestamp)
