If you've been listening to the updates from Philip/Ikaika/John over the last few days, you probably know that the eruption hasn't stopped yet. There is still flow and seeing some other things they don't quite know what to make of yet. F8 has been steaming for the last few days even though the BI including LE got to see some gorgeous blue skies and white fluffy clouds. Last night as a few people in LE commented on social media, there was no glow from F8 at night. Well it's still glowing tonight so as the guys at the HUB have cautioned, don't assume this is a done deal and it's not unusual for an eruption to take a break for a week or two even and restart. Just keep paying attention and staying informed.

And just a note, in watching the F8 camera tonight I've also after seeing the above glows, saw the screen go black and then come back showing a the cone glow. I suspect steam or fog or weather has interferred with the camera picking up the glow at times. Probably always there but masked.

Case in point these 2 camera grabs of F8 cam shortly after the above.

Seismograph readings from ERZ4 in Puna have also shown activity during the day. Thought I had saved off a screen grab to show when there was more activity earlier in the day but guess I didn't since I can't locate it now.

As for the other USGS cams, here's a view from 2 of them taken a few minutes ago that shows other parts of the channel.

Looks like Anthony Quintano (from Honolulu Civil Beat) and his wife will get to have that helicopter ride thanks to their gofundme reaching it's amount. https://www.gofundme.com/hawaiivolcanophotos

Harry Durgin's camera equipment gofundme is 60% of the way there. https://www.gofundme.com/2nd-phase-of-lava-cams  I think funding slowed down with the lava quieting down but as this eruption isn't a dead issue the cameras will still be important to have until it goes quiet completely. As the HUB guys have indicated with the lava channels hardened over, a surge now could be more dangerous and it would be good to still have eyes on the channel and any overflows.

This is quite an amazing photo taken during an overflight of Halema'uma'u and the golf course in close proximity in the foreground. Commentors said that is the Kilauea Military Camp in between the two.

I did find that seimograph from ERZ4 yesterday. Still showing movement down there of lava or gasses underground (bottom colored graph and bottom seismograph line).

5b6c6186e0279_f8-1(10).jpg.28d8f93ab2888

And look what this morning's dual lavacam images are showing.

F8 camera (direct):

5b6c61cb43799_f8-1(11).jpg.cbdeef1a12b54

5b6c61ce1f7a3_f8-3(1).jpg.3d199e2a4dc135

5b6c61d0e23d0_f8-5(1).jpg.3216786fab4791

and the camera pointed further to the left down the channel (both sets of images captured at the same corresponding times):

5b6c61cc87b69_f8-2(3).jpg.565c44f66b4549

5b6c61d37d182_f8-6.jpg.9d8e0ae2dbf881b4c

The glow on F8 is no doubt lava related. The orange glow above the channel from the second camera is the morning sunrise but does give one pause initially. The lavacam is located on Kapoho Road near the Y which would be north of Leilani and camera point of view would be looking south-southeastward so capturing some of the morning sun through the clouds near the horizon.

From this morning's VolcanoYT (ERZ4 is the bottom graph).

The crater seems to be doing a lot of steam this morning.

I didn't check the lavacams until I got back from coffee this morning so missed seeing views from the cams before those images I posted with the glow from F8. However given the sky coloring that might have been around the time when Scott was there. Have to say those fissures are really steaming. Did LE get a lot of rain from Hector? Was wondering if the rain settled into the plumbing system and this is the result (lava would be pretty water absobant I would think). Interesting footage all the same.

I think Philip Ong mentioned that only two feeder bands from Hector crossed lower Puna (at Pahoa). The rain was not heavy.

The observed steam apparently is not Hector related rain water accumulation.

You guys may remember when fb EpicLava took a walk with homeowner Jeff Judd down Judd's road behind the golf course with the cracks that had been forming. He said he lived on the edge of an ancient crater. Mr. Judd also was seen speaking at the most recent meeting in Volcano about changes that the village and roadways around there could anticipate due to the deformation of the ground in the area. Well here's a video of Mr. Judd, who has an interesting work history, over seeing the lava river a little while ago.

OMG never knew he was the first to fall in a lava river in Hawaii. His account of this accident can be read about in this HVNP publication. His story is near the end under Section 12. BTW Mauna Ulu was quite the eruption in it's own rights so you might find this Mauna Ulu Trail Guide worth reading through.

Just read and watched a beautiful video tribute done by fb EpicLava, John Tarson, for his friend, Sean King, who had passed away back in February of SO2 or laze exposure while leading a tour group on a lava field. It started raining and the water reacted with the hot lava and while his hikers were able to make it out of the cloud, he was not. I can see why so many loved this guy.

Ikaika just posted this from the HUB an hour ago. Not an update, but he said he "found this on fb about the HUB and sorry was fed up with this." Apparently he (and HUB employees) have been attacked by a Puna politician through a post made on fb. Someone that he says has tried to have the HUB shut down on several occasions. After reading the comments from this person felt the need to address it.  He doesn't say who this person is but locals probably know or have an idea. ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1928479083871285/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDYwNTc0NDgwNzc1MDM2/ )

Big Island Video News just posted the Puna residents' testimony (just over an hour) during the Council meeting where Mayor Kim's office presented the proposal for use of funds and asked for the Council to request a special session. Below are all segments of this Council Session held on August 7 (videos of the "Ask" and Mayor's response to complaints were previously posted by Moose when they came out but included here for a complete view of the meeting).

Naming of the Fissure was also on the Council's agenda that day.

Thanks for the stream of updates.  I made it to Kona yesterday evening.  The flight had been booked in Feb. for about $425, an irresistible bargain coming from Florida.  I arrived very slightly late at the airport, got rebooked for no charge (!) and was plopped into business class from Los Angeles to Kona.  I’m mystified by the treatment.

The fires look serious.  I guess Harvey may not have been that much of a rain maker.  Today’s light-tourist stuff.

Hey @Dave-Vero glad you landed and enjoyed the bump up in service. I'm guessing there was enough extra room on the plane for them to do that. Smart. Have a great time and your timing there is pretty good as I've seen a lot of great sunrises, day views and sunsets from Kona in the last day or two. Love to see some photos if you can post a few.

@Moose, not sure what video you went to post above the weather one but can't view. Even following it to YouTube get the same result.  Just wanted you to know.

I’m not able to quickly post photos from the main camera.  Seems I might have missed a chance to see the meteor shower fromMauna Kea.  One of the humbling things about this island is that its population may have been larger when Captain Cook arrived than now.

Some of the great southwestern lava flows are awesome.

Air quality in the Kona area was fine today.
