Storm is directly off the west coast of the Big Island as I write this. The air is quiet and there is no rain at the moment. We had 0.4 inch overnight. Even though Hilo is on the east side of they Big Island, it has gotten a lot more rain than those of us on the west side. We'll see how this plays out today as the storm moves northward up the west side of the Big Island and hopefully makes its predicted turn west before reaching Maui and Oahu. - gmp

Here is what it looked like from the farm at 9:24 AM today:

It's been a bit wetter than normal the last 36 hours or so, but nothing to get overly excited about. B) A bit more wind during the night, but again, nothing excessive. I went for my power walk around what's left of Leilani Estates this morning and very little debris on the roads. I was fortunate and it was totally dry during my walk but right now it's torrential. Then again, Leilani Estates handles rain very well. Never any flooded roads and all you'll see is a bit of standing water here and there after the type of heavy rain that we've experienced since Wednesday.

Glad Leilani Estates, who has has more than it's share of nature, is getting a break from all the rain. Kona seems to be doing pretty well. Hilo, not so much. Here's a water comparison that speaks to the amount collected from the mountainside.

That's an excellent explanation, and yes, you hear that misconception being thrown around quite a bit. Which doesn't even make any sense when you think about it - most hurricanes come in from the east or southeast, and when they approach the eastern tip of the Big Island there's absolutely nothing to stop them from causing havoc. Which Iselle proved in August 2014.

It is good to hear from some in Hawaii who still obviously have internet.

I hope what I read about Lane turning away is real and that the rain will stop soon.

Keep in touch as we all care.

I wouldn't walk out on that bridge with the water that high and fast.  You just can't tell if its foundations are compromised.

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

They may very well offer some protection from the power and the direction of hurricanes. Everyone believes so - ancient history and several close calls over the last 15 years seem to bear that out. But the "professionals" will tell you differently.

But they definitely do have a profound effect on everyday weather (rain and wind) in general - as can be seen from this event. The same mountains that protect the Kona side from the most common easterly approaching hurricanes, and provide almost constant benign weather Kona-side, enhance the rain effects on the Hilo side.

The cumulative 2+ ft. of rain on Hilo side (approaching 3 ft in some areas), compared to a 1/2 inch so far here in upslope Kona is a dramatic example. Not a breath of wind, and perfectly normal day so far as of 11am. I've actually started hoping for a little more rain.

Some of these bridges are very old, and with the many recent earthquakes I'm with you.

In the Caribbean, the high mountains of Hispaniola (Pico Duarte 10,164 ft) tear hurricanes apart, giving eastern Cuba a bit of protection.  Checked the Surfline cam for Waikiki; looking quite normal with 3-4 foot surf, even if the weather was described as "blustery."

We are at 34.5" of rain here at our place, about 2 miles up from downtown Hilo.

The nearby rivers are raging as some pictures posted here clearly show.

No wind at all here on the farm. Have had 0.8 inch rain between 9AM and 5:30PM today. Little thunder just started for the first time with this storm, along with a little rain now so will be getting more rain overnight.

Storm is moving away from the islands. Pic of the Kona Coast taken at 5:30 PM from same location on the farm as the 9:24 AM shot:

The rain gauge here has been a busy device.....just passed 41"(1041mm) since Wednesday and still pouring. I wouldn't be surprised, at this point, if we get over 50" when all is said and done. Incredibly there has been little apparent damage here in our neighborhood, which unfortunately, can't be said for other parts of east Hawaii. There is a benefit to living upslope on solid rock. Thankfully there has been no destructive wind adding to the hurricanes impact.

One block over however, is the Wailuku river, which is raging and sounds like a freight train in the distance as the videos in some posts above will attest to.

I checked the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.  Its stream is a small watershed, so I suppose the potential for flood damage there is somewhat limited.

A lot of the rainfall amounts are spectacular.  The latest wind prediction map is encouraging.

Was really thankful to see the quick downgrade in wind intensity as this thing neared the islands, but the rain... My gosh. Hope you all catch a break soon!
