In way of reminder that no one knows what Kilaeua will do in the near future, G. Brad Lewis just posted this photo of Pu'uO'o from today. This was the vent that after the 6.9 earthquake they were pretty sure would never reactivate. I'm glad with the mandatory evac lifted that the cameras are in place at F8 and along the fissure channel.

@WestCoastGal

thank you for the kind words of support... i was 2 streets away when the first fissure came up, i'll never forget the noise it made or the cops yelling for us to evacuate, and then feeling helpless watching from afar as all routines i had known outside of Floribunda were erased forever. i am so lucky to have Jeff as a support system but i wish i could focus better and didnt have to burden him with my chaotic and chronic indecision/depression at this point...

i have always been the 'glass half full' guy, but im turning into a bitter curmudgeon and it scares me.

all of my friends have left, all of my family is overseas... the palms and the Floribunda crew are what keep me sane at this point, but dealing with these extreme weather events is taking its toll. not to mention the year started with a bad breakup and three months of constant rain.

alright im done whining for now :P

Knell, so sorry to hear about your loss. Didn't realize you were right here in LE!

As announced Friday afternoon, the mandatory evacuation ended yesterday, Saturday Sep. 8th at 9 am and the interior roadblocks were removed. The checkpoint at the entrance to Leilani Avenue (coming in from Highway 130) is still there and access is for Leilani residents only. Kim and I drove around early this morning, and first we ventured south on Moku Street, negotiating the cracks there, and they are numerous and significant but have been partly filled in to make access possible. These photos were taken from the northernmost parts of Luana Street, Makamae Street and Ho'okupu Stree, heading north from Malama that is. There are currently no barricades here even though access to the lavafield is illegal.

First two photos: Fissure 8 from Luana Street

Next photo (third photo): Fissure 8 from Makamae Street (note Mauna Kea is visible to the left of F8).

Final three photos are from Ho'okupu Street

@knell, I'm glad you made it out when you did along with your neighbors. Thankfully no one lost their life in Leilani or elsewhere (at least not directly from the lava that I've heard). Anger/bitterness is understandable on so many levels and healthy response to some degree. Saw many posts on Hawaii Tracker from people feeling similarly. Steps of grieving for so much lost, no control and given the violent explosive way it happened undoubtly some PTSD among evacuees. While many people won't seek emotional support through this, please consider that if it is really preventing you from moving forward in a good way. Don't want to see you becoming a victim of this eruption again and latent anger can creep up long after if not addressed, in ways you may not see coming. Sounds like you have some good Floribunda palm friends there and sure they also want to see the best for you. Take time and do something nice for yourself every day even if it's something as simple as appreciating the sunrise or sunset, planting a new palm in a pot if that's all the space you have now to tend to. Get out if only for coffee and a walk downtown. Indecision can be crippling at times and once you can make a plan and move forward I think things will start to look better. I suspect you have a lot of palm friends here as well :D. I'd say from you're smiley face tongue-out guy, you still have your sense of humor which is important. Hope to see you on the forum. At some point I'll be updating about how our garden has been progressing...kind of had my mind on all of this and thankfully our small palm yard has been just doing fine without much attention from us. Love the low maintenance aspect of our yard and the beauty it brings when I see it!

Thanks for the photos @bgl. Still so hard to believe what things look like.

I had a notification pop up that Scott had added a new video and he was at his friends, John and Ronnie's house on Luana. They graciously wanted people to see how the SO2 and gases in the area had affected their home. It's one thing to hear about rust/corrosion but seeing it like that is something you won't forget.

Adding three more photos, and the first one is not a very good one since the sun was straight ahead. This is the "palm house" at the southern end of Moku Street, and this is where the Marojejya darianii were planted (about four of them). Not much left now, and not really surprising. In other areas south of the lava field we saw numerous palms that were clearly not only surviving, but also pushing new growth. Second photo shows a Kerriodoxa elegans and third photo a Licuala ramsayii, both less than a quarter mile south of F8.

I can't start to imagine what people's lungs are like who didn't use preventative measures when all this was going down. Amazing video.

Kim and I saw quite a bit of this type of damage this morning, but since these places were all downwind from the fissures, and specifically from F8, which was by far the largest producer of lava and gases, it's safe to assume that the people who were escorted in (and not allowed to simply "hang around" their properties) also used preventive measures (i.e. masks) for their relatively brief visits. I sensed a bit of sulphur in the air this morning, but only at one location, and other than that we were breathing fresh air, straight in from the Pacific Ocean, thanks to the trade winds. As one of the HVO volcanologists stated during Wednesday's Community meeting - "the human nose can easily detect these gases".

Here's some video to go along with Bo's photos. Gabe posted a video from Leilani around F8 from early this morning.

Bo said Moku was really sketchy. Yeah!

Scott posted this video from yesterday after the barricades came down.

Scott visits Kupono St. and after driving over it, getting out and walking around later explores a huge gaping hole off to the side of the road that he realizes extended under the road he just drove over. Think he sounds a bit surprised and relieved he made it across with his car and didn't collapse it. He walks down Kupono towards Leilani and on his way back to where F9 had erupted across the road, he pans to his left where the roadway experienced a lot of upheaval and through the trees you can see F24. (Following along with my eruption map since he wasn't describing what Fissures he was seeing.

BTW his video segments maybe are out of order. He makes reference early on to a baby cone and fresh lava having recently flown out of it (but we hadn't seen it yet). Later after the Kupono segment, I think he is on Luana at that point looking north at the backside of F8 and again points out the baby cone where this time you see the fresh flow. This small appendage cone never got it's own number.

When he stops Hookupu St. to the left pans to show F8 and then I think we see either F2 or 7 and then straight ahead on Hookupu is F21 (the cone with the hole in the side Bo nice captured with his camera this morning).  Then last segment is the backside of Nohea and to the left that's F24 near the sulfur bank area.

Major road work on some of these roads in the no-go zone. Both guys, like Bo, detected some sulfur smell while out in various parts of the development.

----

Scott just uploaded his trip yesterday down lower Kahukai to Moku past the Community Center and down towards Malama in the former no-go zone. He's been down this way last week but on a bike. Said it's weird to have to stop at stop signs now. HELCO was out replacing power poles. Wow nice to see traffic back in Leilani Estates. Drives down Luana up to F8. Then back onto Malama and Makamae St. and spots National Guard near the lava field. Then back to Malama and Hookupu and visuals of some major cones in the landscape (again F21 straight ahead and either F2 or 7 to the left). End of video.

Thanks Debbie (as always) for the posts! :) I should also have mentioned earlier that Kim and I were quite surprised to see a couple of HELCO trucks this morning. Around 6:30 am on a Sunday morning, pretty impressive! B) I believe this was on Ho'okupu Street, just south of the lava field and north of Malama of course. They asked me to move my truck (which I was going to do anyway since it was a quick stop for us) because they were getting ready to do some work. There are downed poles and lines left and right in the area north of Malama and south of the lava field. Total disaster and lots of work for the HELCO crews over the coming weeks. Friday morning around 7 am as I was making a right turn onto Leilani Avenue from Pomaikai Street (and of course the roadblock was still there at that time) there were SEVEN large white trucks from Big Island Tree Service waiting in a neat line to get into the no-go zone. HELCO is hiring them to do a lot of work.

I didn't know what to expect from the USGS cam inside F8 but noticed this this morning apx 5:40 am HST (8:40 am PDT). BTW their timestamps on these cameras just like before when they were temp cameras in "Somewhere" in the LERZ are weirdly off by like a half-hour.

This was the view from Sunday.

5b9692fe6b9c8_f8-2(8).thumb.jpg.f4ca84d3

There's been some light whisps of smoke/steam near the back of the cone wall and you can see light gray patches (indicating fresh lava) scattered in the foreground (spatter thrown upward and out?). And here's the view from just this morning:

5b9692fc4ff5a_f8-1(33).thumb.jpg.7b1d93d

Since the camera is stationary, the "hot spot" appears to be closer to the foreground than I would have expected and not emanating from the little vent that formed in the cooling lake a few days back.

Speaking of the F8 lava lake, a Skylight has opened over the area! How cool. Ikaika Marzo shared this video last night of it in an overflight made on Sunday 9/9, and he gave the following description.

5b96a755e6e34_f8-1(37).jpg.6e958a63c5f4a

Now in light of the image of the USGS F8 camera I posted immediately above this post, I'm thinking maybe with an IR camera that the white showing in that image is the heat emanating from the skylight.

Here's a link to Ikaika's video: ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1974020775983782/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDg3MDYxNDAxNDU5Njc3/ )

Today being Monday means there will be another HUB update talk tonight. Should be interesting to hear the guys' views.

Hard to judge how thick the lava bed is/was at that spot without any real point of perspective. At first I thought the hole occurred where the hornito had appeared. Here's a close up view taken from the end of the Ikaika's video. I've seen skylights on lava flows on the south flank of Kilaeua before but can't say I've seen any on a lava lake in a cone before. Always a learning experience.

5b96a50d5ed73_f8-1(35).thumb.jpg.b504b1a

From a 9/3 overflight photo of the lava lake in F8, the hole looks similarly positioned to where the hornito was. Thought maybe the weight of the cone couldn't be supported any longer with the lava lake level below it having dropped and leaving a void. However I enlarged that section of the photo and think the hole appeared in the lava just in front of the hornito. See what you think using the surrounding cone walls to judge for yourself.

5b96ae646bced_f8-1(38).thumb.jpg.9f301b2

If you aren't familiar with the terminology, from wikipedia: "Hornitos are conical structures built up by lava ejected through an opening in the crust of a lava flow. Hornitos are similar to spatter cones but are rootless, meaning they were once a source of lava but that source was not directly associated with a true vent or magma source."

Here's the original overflight photo from 9/3.

Some updates:

Harry Durgin's photography display that was to be held on Wednesday night at the Hilo Photography Club was called off due to the storm and while offered another date in October is hoping to find a location to host sooner. Will post when I see an update.

----

If anyone in Leilani is in need of placards, be it for themselves or workmen etc., saw outgoing councilwoman Eileen O'hara post that they can offer help at their office (old Police station next to the 7-11) for Leilani residents. I have wondered outloud before why LE and lower Puna residents need to travel all the way to Hilo round trip (as these are the residents that would need to get them) instead of County officials temporarily renting office space in a church, school, police station, etc. to make it convenient for residents to obtain them closer to their homes. Hope this saves returning evacuees some time and trouble.

Hawaii Tracker has been working on their website and added some really useful things to it. This IS NOT the facebook group side. It's their own website. You can now find Latest Updates there, a stunning Gallery of photos from local Hawaii Tracker photographers (Andrew Hara, Ken Boyer, Harry Durgin, G. Brad Lewis), and a new Monitoring section. In addition to USGS webcams from around the Summit and LERZ and Harry's F8 lavacam, they have a section on Tilt (along with a Philip Ong video explaining what tilt is and how to read the recordings) and one for GPS seismograph readings (although ERZ4 in Kapoho area is not listed there).

The website was set up to continue to be a resource for residents and interested parties. The ground work and analysis done has been a volunteer effort and gone on longer than expected. They are asking if people can and are willing to, to help with any financial support they can offer to help defray some of the costs. You can read more about this effort and fundraising here: https://hawaiitracker.com/about/. Donations can be made through the site by credit card or Paypal.

Hadn’t realized that today was the last day of the Nautulis dive off Hawaii. I thought they were still over Lo’ihi but when I tuned in a little while ago found they had been checking out Kilaeua’s lava entry along the Kapoho coast. :o

If you visit the site right now and scrub to the beginning, you can still catch a part of the feed before they start the ascent. Both Argus and Hercules are stored on the Nautilus’ deck now and done for this mission. If I have time later will post a few images I did get from today.

Kind of busy today but wanted to post a few things to share with your guys.

First off Ikaika posted drone footage from yesterday taken over the braided channel down from Fissure 8, and includes the few homes on the kipuka down Kahukai. Gotta see. When you look from bank to bank of the walls you do get a real sense of how immense this flow was. And even with the lava 20-30 feet above the present level and near the top of the wall, just imagine how much more lava was in there.

BTW if you can, you want to go into the Setting wheel and click on HD to view. ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1975914602461066/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDg4MDQ0NjM4MDI4MDIw/ )

Glanced over at the USGS F8 cam as it was starting to get dark (7:13 pm HST or so) and noticed the glow. After comparing this photo to one taken earlier today the glow looks to be to the right and back of the skylight which I found interesting. Too bad we seldom have flyovers (although I'm sure the residents are happy they are fewer).

5b99f2e386668_f8-1(42).thumb.jpg.f4525c6

At one point this afternoon (it had rained recently as there were raindrops on the lavacam view), it looked like some of the exposed lava was steaming and the USGS camera was registering a temp then of 106F which I'm thinking was caused by the steam in the cone.

5b99f4106f586_f8-1(43).thumb.jpg.4565048

Since it was installed I've seen it get to 99F in the afternoon but 106F has been the highest I've noticed it at. Hot and steamy. I remember walking across Kilauea Iki back in the early 1990s and vividly remember how warm and occasionally steamy it could be crossing from one side to the other. The morning air on Crater Rim Drive was chilly but once you got down to the lava lake floor the air temp was quite warm and jackets came off.

Just discovered this new drone video from Ikaika posted 3 hours ago of the pit inside F8 and the channel leading out of the cone, great video. Do adjust the setting to HD. ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1977343945651465/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDg4Njk3NzY0NjI5Mzc0/ )

Off topic here and more for your amusement and listening enjoyment (maybe) I've noticed in this video and the last one Ikaika posted (of the braided channel) that the song credit goes to Lindsey Stirling. I recognized the name from the videos she did with the Piano Guys a while back.  ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p0BqUcQ7i0 )

A zoomed in view of the pit from the video. That "small" hole isn't so small any more.

I will admit I was a bit surprised this morning to see this. About 9am PDT. Usually the view is totally black. Maybe more rain/moisture got down there and is releasing more heat?

BTW in case you are wondering, when asked in the comment section about the drone usage, Ikaika said it's his friend's drone and while he's happy to have moved back into his home which is very close to F8 he is nervous about F8 and the drone's view gives him some sense of what's going on. As you know, Hawaii County Civil Defense flyovers have ceased unless they say there's something happening to get them to restart. And apart from this USGS camera at F8 and an occasional UAS overflight by USGS, residents feel left in the dark sleeping next to this giant and want closer monitoring as to its condition and activity at F8. Remember that while other eruptions have ended a month after the lava ceased, there was still another that reactivated 3.5 months later. This eruption has been a record setter in many respects so no one knows what to realistically expect from it.

Think I read that the Federal drone ban expires end of Sept (28th maybe). I think I would be torn about living near there again and certainly understand when all of your money is tied up in a house and the house is fine and it looks like F8 is paused or possibly done the financial reasons to return. I don't think I'd sleep well though so also understand his need for more information.

Curious now to see how long the glow will be visible as we move into daylight.

ahh, heat glow gets lost in the daylight.

While not about this eruption but past eruptions of Kilauea's Pu'uO'o, this new short film entitled "Volcanic Tides" by film producer Lance Page, should appeal to anyone interested in the beauty and power of Kilauea's lava. Lance posted a link to the trailer for his 2-year filming project on fb Hawaii Trackers recently and thought people here might be interested as well. The film was just released on the 12th and is now available on Vimeo on Demand.

For more info on "Volcanic Tides": https://vimeo.com/ondemand/volcanictides/261033211

If you curious about Lance Page's work, his last film was "A Frozen Road" (https://www.instagram.com/benpagefilms/?hl=en).

If you are an Instagram user, check out his discount promo to help promote the release of his film ( https://www.instagram.com/p/BnpcK9-HXYk/?taken-by=pagefilms ). Even if you aren't an IG user, you can still view his photos and many video clips of lava scenes on his site:  https://www.instagram.com/pagefilms/ There is  footage from Leilani in there like this timelapse from Kaupili Street back in May: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjqv-unnJ8T/?taken-by=pagefilms

Hopefully work like Lance's and so many of our BI photographers and videographers will continue to garner attention long after the lava has stopped and bring people to the island to see more in person.

Philip and John did a preview of their chat tonight followed by the actual full-length chat. Think this is something that they are going to try to do for those that want/need an abreviated version.

Scott's videos showing corrosion from sulfur fumes are likely to become useful archival/educational information for similar situations in the future.  Thanks to the people who shared damage to their homes.

If it weren't for people risk filming and those willing to share their experiences I don't think we'd really know much about this eruption and how really different this one was or how it affected so many people. Numbers don't really convey the vast area covered like photos before, during and after that we've witnessed. Available news back on the mainland has been minimal even from the bigger news channels and news from Puna not even mentioned in my area for quite some time. If it weren't for sharing on the internet, don't think I'd know much about what went on or the challenges Puna faces moving forward.

I thought I'd post to share here a few videos from people traversing the 'a'a flows down by Poihiki to get to the new beach and old boat ramp area at Isaac Hale Beach Park.

This post from fb David Thesman with photos and 2 videos of what it was like to see and cross the lava field is worth watching. Like that he annotated the images. ( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2114278388602795&set=pcb.1090689067763577&type=3&theater&ifg=1 ) Click through the images. I knew from the aearial overhead flight videos we got to see from Mick Kalber and others if you slo-mo'd through them at times you could see how the lava had begun to encroach onto the park/picnic area. David's second photo really illustrates how close that came in one spot.

Here's his advice:

Video from YT Gabe Humphries trip over the 'a'a down to Poihiki beach and dock.

Isaac Krakauer posted this video on Poihiki ( https://www.facebook.com/isaac.krakauer/videos/1892259630861659/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDkwMzQ1NTgxMTMxMjU5/ )  Change the setting to HD when viewing.

I've been looking for news of this, the construction on more micro units, and Hawaii Tribune-Herald had this article today.

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/09/15/hawaii-news/hale-iki-village-almost-ready-for-families-displaced-by-lava-to-move-in/

I'm wondering if these are the ones that Ikaika and his friends were working to add. I know he mentioned at one point getting some zoning or code issues raised by Eileen O'Hara but not sure what happened after that. I don't have facebook so can't follow Ikaika's account for updates.

Interesting video from Scott of interview with Stacy Welch at her house in Leilani. She has been in a tent at the Pahoa shelter for the past 121 days and invited him and us to see the house she was close to putting drywall on before the eruption happened and she had to evacuate. Also showing signs of corrosion inside. Then Stacy takes us outside into her backyard where there was apparently an old deep fissure crack on the property that was covered by growth that became something similar to what Jason Twillman had happen on his property with the flowing lava sinking into it. Although Stacy's old fissure crack she said she thinks was more like 100 feet deep. She pulls up video she had shared before of how F24 poured lava down in sheets into the crack. Really amazing. And so fortunate for Stacy that that crack prevented the lava from crossing further onto her property and taking out the house she had worked so hard to nearly complete. Thanks Stacy for the super educational tour.

BTW Stacy said during all this happening, her property in Napa burned down in the fires in California. And we know she ended up in a tent at the Pahoa shelter for 3 months afterwards. Amazingly resilient woman who has had to face all this. Wish her all the best and back to normal soon.

I do remember early on seeing a video posted within Leilani of lava coming out of the ground in a wooded area and finding it's way into a crack and the lava disappearing into the ground. I thought this was around the upper Malama end of Leilani. Video probably linked to somewhere early on in this thread. After seeing Scott's video and hearing Stacy's description and phone videos, I'm thinking that crack probably was part of the fissure that ran to her backyard. Given that she said this was around F24/F8 sounds like it could have been. I'm sure there were/are a few old deep cracks from lava tubes around Leilani, many never opening up much. Wonder if these were all the result from the 1955 eruption down that way.
