Everyone:

I've just been advised that a memorial service will be held at Sherman Gardens, Corona del Mar, California (Orange County) on Monday, June 18, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.; guests may arrive at 6:00 p.m.

There will be a memorial concert by Ralph's son, Steve Velez.

Click on the link below for directions, etc., as to Sherman Gardens. Ralph would have loved this, and so, I think, will you.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

It was a lovely evening filled with some great mementos from Ralph and fun stories and remembrances. Thanks to everyone involved and Sherman Gardens for hosting in such a beautiful setting!

I wasn't able to attend, alas.

Anyone have any pictures?

I hear it was lovely, with a nice concert by Ralph's son and his friends, plus plants, reminiscenses, etc.

  • 5 years later...

It's always difficult to find that colleagues and friends you've known for many years have passed away.
I knew Ralph since the early 1980's.   And, I got to know his wife Nilda as she always came to PSSC meeting with him.
He was a board member of our Society for decades.  He contributed greatly to our Group.
One time, Ralph by himself, set at a small table at Crystal Court for a weekend to tell people about palms and the Society.
He only got about eight people to join, but that was more than anyone else.  And, no one else spent a weekend trying to recruit members.
This tells you a lot about how much he loved his garden, palm trees, and the Palm Society.
We visited over the phone or at meetings at least a hundred times.  We always talked about palms, his garden and his family.
I know that his passing was difficult for one of his sons.

For the past three years I've deeply missed him.  Finally I'm given this chance to mention my sorrow and respect for him.
Ralph, continue with your time here to impress and influence others.  Maybe we'll see each other again some day.

Never met him, but I thought it was cool that his name became a verb on this forum.

I aspire to become the Ralph Velez of Northern California.  ( Ralph was always most kind and helpful to me. )
