Whats your technique for propagation?

Clip n wax the tops, dip in hormodin 3 and run them in the green house into a rooting bed or plug trays depending on space .. today its in the beds, they root out in a few weeks and then stick 2 or three  to a gallon depending on variety and how well they rooted out

Well done!

In the past I have done the rooting hormone in a cup of water to root out then transfer to a pot.

Earlier this year, purchased some propagation trays and a heat mat. I did loose some to rot.....

There are a couple varieties i have had less than stellar results with, I am setting up a small  hydroponic raft this weekend and see if I have better luck getting them to grow this way

Will hit these with some cytoplex   and foliar feed  combo this weekend

I always root them in water first and pot them when they have 2 inch roots. I have rooted more than 20 varieties.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Hello Umbrae.....

Looking good there! :)

Could you please share with us what kind of wax you use and how you apply it?

I have a gazilion Cordylines at my place and short range plan is to do as much propagation as necessary after pruning them as needed.

They are super easy to propagate as cane or tip cuttings - I have done both with success. Just need to budget the time NOW while conditions are so good.

Here's a batch I recently purchased for future landscape jobs - 'Auntie Lou' and 'Florica' and 'Red Sensation' in the middle.....I also like 'Black Magic' a LOT and use it where possible. I'll probably step up some of these 3's into 7's because they are also nice to use for more immediate visual impact.

Thanks!!!

Its Paraffin wax like used for canning, i keep a small pot of itb and hot plate  on very low setting and just dip the ends in two or three times to get a good seal, my canes do way better when i wax the tops , i set up a water tank with aerator in it to do my tip cuttings in ... works pretty good still working out a few kinks... but start getting roots in 3 or 4 days

Umbrae, is it necessary to maintain the original 'up&down orientation of the stem cuttings ? I live in a cooler climate, but I do have one I would like to propagate. Thanks.

up and down works best you can lay logs flat though and do ok with them as well

I'm sorry to be not clear.  I mean should the stem piece be placed with the original, higher growth maintained upwards when rooting the stem section.  This means the wax must be on the 'top'.  ?  If the logs are horizontal can the new growth appear at either end ?  Thanks !

New growth will appear at the nodes if horizontal

Thanks !  :greenthumb:
