Absolutely amazing Bill. Looks like it's growing in Hawaii or in habitat. Any luck from anybody germinating your first batch of seeds?

That's truly a spectacular looking palm, Bill, and I consider myself fortunate to have seen it myself a couple of times over the past several years! :) Interestingly, one of mine (in Leilani Estates) is just about the same size, with the same amount of trunk and it has also flowered a couple of times. I collected seeds, maybe 15-18 months ago or so, and was successful in germinating some of the seeds. A fairly low percentage germinated, but that's OK - I don't need a hundred Dypsis prestoniana palms! :mrlooney: Only about six or seven germinated, and they are currently tiny two leaf seedlings. Interestingly, they all survived the recent volcanic eruption, even though many other smaller palms simply croaked. All the taller D. prestoniana are just fine, and show absolutely no sign of damage from the SO2 gas (or other gases). At least you don't have to deal with that! :mrlooney:

Mine is a long ways behind yours, but it is doing great. Not trunking yet but constantly getting beefier with a 10 inch diameter base and is on it's fourth leaf spear since spring.

Very nice! Degree of leaf curl seems to be variable among varieties or maybe is dependent on growing conditions?

If by curl, you are referencing the leaf spiraling on it's access, I have seen variation from leaf to leaf on mine.  They definitely become more curled or spiraled as the leaf becomes more pendant.  Even my smaller Dypsis prestoniana shows that trait to varying degrees.  In the photo of the full plant, you can see the lowest leaf on the right of the photo with no spiral.  The leaf coming directly toward the camera is spiraled so that the leaf tip is actually upside down, as is the one going away from the camera and hanging over the driveway.  The leaf sheath, boot, or petiole base on this one is pretty ugly and always looks partially dead, but the rest of the leaf and leaflets look great.  I often wonder if it will grow out of this, or if this is just the way this particular plant grows because it has always looked like this.

Here is one of my smallest ones its just at 3 foot tall now but super pretty and always happy and pushes multiple Spears a year . Been in the ground from a 1 gallon for almost 2 years fast grower in my opinion unlike my robustas which seem like slugs . Any ideas on which prestoniana it is ? I have a bigger one that is about 9 foot tall overall that is in a 15 gallon pot that I’m trying to acclimate to full sun seems as though it’s doing pretty good definetly not as dark green as the smaller one

Actually, the detail I was referring to was the curl on each leaflet tip. On my plant, each leaflet tip curls when the frond opens. Your leaflet tips don't seem to curl as much on the newer fronds.

That is pretty impressive growth in 2 years for Southern California.  I guess independent of which variation, the fact that it is growing rapidly and adapting to your climate are great signs for a beautiful palm!

What stunning trees and very helpful to me as I eye possible locations to plant mine still in pots!

I'll try to add some photos of my young ones in the next day or two.

(Topics like this are some of the many things I enjoy about Palmtalk.  I can search most any palm species and come up with a variety of photos and comments nowhere else and often including people I have actually met. Plus 24/7 access. I am very appreciative of the IPS funding for this site and to Dean as moderator and all of you who contribute).

So my smaller one keeps pushing out inflorescence, but I never see any seed set.  This last go round opened during winter, and I never saw the flowers open to be pollinated.  Did yours push out multiple inflo's before you saw seed set?  The inflorescence is getting bigger each time it pushes out one.

Here's mine last August. Seeds developed and ripened quite quickly, turning orange in color. Like Tim, I have had no germination as yet. The usual 5-gal orange bucket for scale.

The first time out, it threw up 3 spathes at once.. I cut off the 1st and 3rd.. none germinated. This time I ignored the two.. if some pop from ground.. there you go.  I measured a few weeks back.. 14" across at the base!

This morning....
