Jeff,

The croton in post 12 appears to have fantastic scarlet marbling on huge leaves.  Any closeups of that one?

Thanks,

Ray

Ray, I went on a mission today looking for that croton that I posted in #12.  I found 3 that had that scarlet marbeling.  One large one in deep shade, one small one that appears to be a cutting that was stuck in the ground, and one large one growing through a hibiscus hedge that gets full midday sun for a few hours a day.  The larger plants have huge leaves!

Here is the small one

Top of the plant.  The pink leaves are the size of most normal croton leaves.  You can see how big they get on this plant!

This leaf (again on the same plant) is over a foot long and at least 8 inches wide.

Then there is this one growing in deep shade and it's much darker than the others.  I will try and get some close-up pictures tomorrow.

Hi Jeff,

Gorgeous pink.  It could be Super Petra or a form of Rheedii.  I've not seen Puccini in person but photos resemble your plant as well.  These damned hybrids drive me nuts LOL!!

Well whatever it is, I love it!  Where else in the plant world are you going to find a plant with so many different leaf patterns and colors all on the same plant?  I want to get some cuttings of that one going.  I love the huge leaves on this plant!

LOL!  You were old enough to watch that show?  I remember seeing it as a teenager.  I would have thought you were too young at that time.

You know you will always be included Bren!

I do remember it well although I was grade school age. That's right you've fermented 9-10 yrs longer than me..... ya old fart  :P  :P

BTW, Did that Disocactus ramulosus cutting ever root that you took back?

¡¡Ajá!! ¡Usted pronto será viejo también mi amiga!

No it didn't make it.  After my trip to FL in June, I ended up extending my stay in PA for almost 3 weeks and I forgot about it in my suitcase.  It was completely dried up :(

Ray and Jeff,

I finally had a chance today to take some pictures of that last croton.  This one is in full shade.  I'm pretty sure this is the plant that I originally posted a picture of.

Discolored leaf.  The older leaves on the shade grown plants have this discoloration.

Jeff,

Is this on the property where you live or in the park next door? The leaves look huge, did you get a measurement? Love the orange in the leaf in the first pic, gotta wonder what this plant could look like with a little sunshine!

That plant is growing right outside my door under a huge mango tree.  I haven't measured (I don't have a tape measure) but the leaves are very large on this plant.

Ray,

You & Jeff need to start a croton site like palmedia for ID'ing all these! I've yet to run across a decent croton website that categorizes them.  :D

Ray

I'm looking forward to seeing it.  We need a good database of crotons, esp. with some people giving "new" names to named varieties.

I've gotta join the croton society - these plants are awesome.

Ray,  I thought Super Petra was relatively new?  This plant has been here for a while so I had thought it was something else.  Oh well, I learn something new everyday!  Thanks for the ID!  I found another croton yesterday with some fantastic color (I keep finding new crotons that I never noticed before).  I will take some pictures and post them in a couple days.  Tomorrow I am flying to San Jose and then Monday to Limón (on the Caribbean side) to pick up an SUV that is being shipped down from the US.  Then I have to drive it back to the Pacific coast.  I'm hoping to stop at a nursery or two (or 8!) on the way and pick up some new crotons and heliconias.

Super Petra is at least 20 years old and was widely produced at one time.
