Duck Weed as Bio Fertilizer?

Recommended Posts

I have a small waterlily pond in my beach garden and about a year ago I started seeing masses of duck weed that just seemed to come from nowhere. It is amazing how quickly this stuff takes over. I started skimming it off and thought it might make a nice mulch for some of my younger palms that I am trying to establish. As a mulch this stuff does not work.It breaks down very quickly.

I think it has done wonders for a few small palms.I am able to harvest about a five gallon bucket every two weeks. I have been top dressing a few palms every month. I recently found some articles online that do confirm that it is a good source of nitrogen. My "soil " at the beach is pure sand so I do have to fertilize frequently. I am always concerned about run off into the ocean.

This is a small Syagrus stenopetala that was not growing until I started the duck weed . Now it is going pinnate and beyond !

Cool growth on your Syagrus! I usually chuck this stuff somewhere in the garden, but will aim for certain plants now... Thanks!

If it's green it has nitrogen in it. Chuck it on the garden especially if you're on sand. You'll be feeding the beneficial microbes too.
