The cold is finally hitting now, although nothing major compared to some places. I am only reporting +3.4C / 39F at midday however. Tonight I will probably experience my fist frost in 5-6 weeks. The cold had to arrive sooner or later. We have -12C hPa isotherms moving in overhead at 1,500 meters.

Parts of France and the whole of Germany are completely in the freezer. This cold blast is coming straight down from Scandinavia and also Siberia. Hopefully it runs out of steam a bit by the time it properly reaches us tomorrow. Look at the temps across Germany at lunch time! I don’t think anywhere is above freezing! :o

Brutal cold across Scandinavia and Siberia over the past week or so. St Petersburg, Russia has dropped to -30C and Moscow has reached -28C as well in recent nights. These screenshots were taken at about 9pm their time, way before they reached their minimums!

Norway and Sweden have recorded their coldest temperatures of this century, close to -45C! Most of us cannot even fathom those sort of temperatures! 🥶

Temperatures down to -30C on the outskirts of Norway’s capital, Oslo, which is the coldest on record for that area, beating the old record from 1841! That is shocking.

The actual city of Oslo has also recorded temperatures down to -23C as well. The coldest temperature since 1987, which was only 0.1C colder back then as well. So it has been exceptionally cold across Scandinavia, even by their own chilly standards. Now all that cold is descending into Central Europe!

It is also the 3rd coldest start to a year on record for Finland’s capital, Helsinki. The only 2 colder starts were also El Niño winters as well, which is surely no coincidence!

July 2018 was an exceptionally warm month during a pretty good summer. Heathrow had an average high of 28.3C for July and St James Park had an ave high of 28.1C in July 2018. However July 2006 was also similarly warm with an average high of 28.2C at Heathrow and 28.0C at St James Park. Those two July’s are amongst the warmest on record.

For contrast, when we had 40C+ in July 2022, the average max for that month only came in at 27.2C at Heathrow. So that is a whole 1C cooler than July 2018 and 2006, despite the record breaking 40C heat in 2022. The average high for August 2022 also came in at 27.1C, only 0.1C cooler than the July it proceeded. Overall summer 2022 was the warmest on record however.

One month nobody talks about is July 1983, which had an average max of 27.7C at Heathrow (St James Park data not available), which seems ludicrous for any month to have an average high of 27-28C back then before things had properly started warming up. Although I believe the old Greenwich station supposedly had an average high of 29.1C in July 1911 however, during the sunniest month on record, which saw 384 hours of sunshine at Eastbourne.

I was looking at Albany’s forecast the other day and was surprised just how cool it was there, certainly in terms of daytime maxes. That would be poor for us here in July even. I guess that is the effects of an El Niño summer for you guys, although Perth seems pretty hot and dry still regardless.

So far it has been less severe than predicted. There has been more cloud coverage than in the forecast and at least here air is not coming from the East completely but a bit from the South. Which the is also contrary to the prediction on the radar. If you're lucky this cold won't really hit you across the channel.

Well at least in my garden measured at around 1.8m above ground I'm still at -1.7°C. But I also posted that it's -3°C at the official station.

yes no prob, i just think that there are too many weatherstations showing -3/-4C very near the center of Dusseldorf so it might be possible your reading is flawed. I can imagine some of the others have good equip and measure at 1.8m too. None are above -3C

Yes that's why I posted the official reading. It shouldn't be too far off but it's just what I measure in my garden. It's also just a 1.3 degrees difference. It's just my microclimate. The official station also says -3.2°C. Oh and btw I'm in the City's South, not the centre.

@Hortulanus You are getting cained over there with clear skies. You must be having your worst freeze in a few years? These are midnight temperatures. :o

Poland as well is getting cained tonight. There is a guy on here who grows CIDP, Washingtonia, Butia etc (with protection) and he is getting below -15C / 5F tonight.

Tonight it is also snowing in Paris. The cloud cover is saving them from a more serious freeze, so only down to -1C / 30F in the centre.

Holding up above freezing here, just about. There is no frost on the car roofs. I am reporting +1.8C / 35F at 1am here. Central London is about 3C / 38F, so not a huge difference tonight. I will get worse temperatures in the coming nights, under clear skies, although the sea and coastal influence is moderating the airmass heavily.

Yes but it didn't get much colder than at midnight. That's what I meant with the forecast being worse than reality. So you probably won't get anything of it. It hasn't been the worst freeze in years. I found the end of 2022 to be much worse. This time it's a dry freeze with lower humidity and sunny skies at day. Even though I bottomed out at -5.5°C the sun will warm up most of the garden and above zero temperatures are forecasted for the day. Last winter the flactuactions between very warm and very cold and the humidity were much worse imo. It also seems to be only 3 days. But we will see... :greenthumb:

Definitely a dry freeze low here was 36.5f/2.5c with 69% humidity. The humidity today is forecasted to be around 56% and 55% tomorrow.

Frost Day #2:  As anticipated, bottomed out at 29F as the sun rose. ..Already back to 42F at 9:17AM..  Couple more cold starts to go, then ..looking better once we reach and get past the weekend ahead..

Screenshot2024-01-09at09-04-35ChandlerAZ10-DayWeatherForecastWeatherUnderground.png.0711cf3788aed7856d06fc73a971f14b.png

Looking around outside just after 8:30 this morning,  moderate frost in the usual spots out back ..but no ice, even is buckets containing water / moist Coco Peat currently sitting in areas of the yard that stay shaded this time of day.  No ice in a pan containing water up under the patio either..  Good enough for me..

Sun hits the front yard as soon as it gets up over the trees across the street.. No frost anywhere out there.

#'s from around the E. Valley / Tucson, and the Central Borderlands.. Surprisingly, once again, not quite as cold in a lot of places down there as i'd anticipated.. Can they escape seeing widespread, lowe teens / 20-21F max  readings down there the next few days??    Keep in mind that many areas in that part of the state are listed as Z8, even on the latest map update..

1°C was forecasted as a high today. That didn't happen. We went just above freezing but not 1°C at around 2/3 p.m.. Tomorrow a high of 3°C is forecasted. But honsetly I don't care too much because it's sunny all day and most of my garden got warmed up by that. Some leaf discoloration even disappeared. I don't understand the comparison with Paris but they had cloud coverage and snowfall. In southern France temperatures also plummeted down to -5°C right at the coastline.

Currently -4.7°C at half past 2 a.m.. Already went down to -5.2°C around midnight but so far it's staying on that level. Last morning I had a low of -5.5°C and today's high was only 0.5°C. It's a very dry freeze. There was no ice on the roofs or the cars this morning. Currently it's also completely calm. I thought about tying together my Washingtonias as they are the most exposed to radiation but in the sun the discoloration went away and then I decided to risk it so they can fully absorb the sun again. ☀️🥶

The warmest parts of London are holding out at about 2C / 36F at 3am, despite having clear skies all night. St James Park out in the exposed open is reporting +1.3C / 34F and Battersea Heliport by the Thames is reporting +2.1C / 36F. Kew Gardens has dropped down to +1.2C / 34F. Heathrow airport is one of the coldest official stations in London tonight at +1.1C / 34F.

The mildest places in the UK tonight seem to be on the northeast coast of England around Yorkshire especially. Some places are holding up at 5-6C / 41-43F surprisingly. Partly due to cloud cover and partly due to an easterly breeze.

On the south coast, the area from Torquay down to Salcombe in the county of Devon seems to be doing pretty well. Only 3-4C / 38-40F at 3am. Go further inland however and there is frost.

The Scilly Isles are looking pretty chilly tonight and down to +4C / 40F at 3am.

In southern France temperatures also plummeted down to -5°C right at the coastline.

I didn’t see that, most of the cote d’azur and the area above perpignan seemed to have stayed above 0C. Which location was that?

This one is in Aigues Mortes. The costal areas just south of Montpellier went below freezing with the exception of the islands which went down to around 1c.

East of there though (Toulon, Cannes, Monaco ect) because of the protection from the mountain ranges didn't drop below 5c. The mountains also blocked the colder air to the north and instead the wind direction there was coming from the east off the Mediterranean sea.

Thanks for that, that min temp was around -2C. I also checked coastal Meze which can be cold as well but that only went to -0,7C.

So the quoted -5C for coastal France was incorrect, i think that was the dew point.

No it's not incorrect. Around the Valras-Plage area down to Gruissan (where I used to go on holiday) temperatures dropped to -4/-5 in the morning.

I made a screenshot to sent to my brother:

On wunderground the weather stations there right next to the coast are showing around -1c and -2c around 1 mile inland. Must be an error with the website.

@Hortulanus is right about -4C to -5C temps along parts of the French Med region, although that was maybe just inland a bit. It was likely closer to -3C right at the coast itself. I was checking the other night and I saw places that were already reporting -3C at midnight just inland a bit. They would have gone a fair bit lower than that.

A closer inspection shows that Montpellier Airport, which is shown on the map above (reading -3C at midnight), eventually went down to -5.5C in the end. That is only about 1 mile inland from the French Med coast. I’m sure a few other places would have got a little bit colder than that even.

London’s microclimate flexed hard last night with clear skies all night long, yet many areas did not even reach freezing away from the inland western suburbs. Battersea Heliport in central London right by the Thames only went down to +1.7C. Despite being out in the open in ‘green’ spaces and quite exposed, St James Park only went down to +1.3C and Kew Gardens only saw +1.2C as well.

Similar with Bushy Park in the southwestern suburbs, which only went down to +0.5C. Heathrow further out in the inland western suburbs did see -0.2C however and registered a technical air frost. Still very mild given the cold airmass that has come across from the continent. Unlike London, I went down to -2C / 28F here under clear skies with no urban heat island!

Temperatures are peaking at around 6C / 43F in London as of 2pm this afternoon. It is a lovely sunny day today, even though it is on the cold side of things. ☀️

Another ‘ice day’ in Düsseldorf and the rest of Germany with maxima at or below freezing at best. That would be getting into worrying territory a bit now.

We went above freezing today. Only around 1.5°C but I'm not too worried anyway because of the sunshine and next night is the last one that cold. Under the mulch the soil ist still soft as well. But we will see every frost comes with surprises in damage. Negative and positive ones. :greenthumb:

@UK_Palms@Foxpalms So I did some research and the official weather station at the airport recorded -5°C.

Capture4.PNG.4bdda2c80ba564c73cc5a9b8d5592c30.PNG

The airport is that far away from the sea:

That would make sense as the wunderground stations I was looking at were closer to the sea.

Man it is a cold arse day here today. I’m reporting 5.2C / 42F at midday. Unlike yesterday, it is cloudy and feels much cooler out of the sun. I am definitely ready for spring now. Only 7 weeks left to go lol.

7944CD27-0729-48A8-8E63-4D009B54BB20.thumb.jpeg.7a03a7d69bd28a7622445cbcb708c104.jpeg

St James Park in central London narrowly escaped an air frost last night with a minimum of +0.7C. Battersea Heliport by the Thames only went down to +1.4C however.

AAD8EED7-3DC7-4387-9362-6E9249C60086.thumb.jpeg.6f98eb9cbce9fd551c063c64bddc66c3.jpeg

A low of -0.1C at Kew Gardens and -0.7C at Heathrow though, which are less protected locations on cold winter nights. Although on the flip side they usually register higher maxima during summer.

C2F36464-5420-495D-B72C-4A0A68D6D3BD.thumb.jpeg.dc186b654b9b05e17638da932fa5f6cf.jpeg

The cold air managed to cross the channel last night, although it was heavily moderated by the sea that is protecting us. I snapped these images of the temperature gradient again last night at around midnight…

6929A772-8DC3-4575-AE2E-4D2194F6EB95.thumb.jpeg.35fe2016aff711dfeded35ed8c257923.jpeg

Yet again many northern areas remained much milder with some places only having 7-8C minimums last night, since they are further away from the cold airmass lurking on the continent. Morecambe in Lancashire for instance, which is still 8C / 46F at the time of writing this. There is an obvious microclimate in that part of northwest England as well. Coastal areas of northern England usually fair much better than the south coast during these kind of setups.

55F, windy, hazy ..and just plain raw out there w/ some passing clouds as ..what is left of  " The storm in a hurry "  rapidly exits stage left towards Texas and the plains. Not a drop of rain here, but looked like a few brief storms blew up just south and east of here as the cold front raced through..

N.W.' rly 25-40MPH Wind gusts are the " Elephant in the room " at the moment making ..what would be a reasonably pleasant 55 feel " a bit " colder..   Should slowly die down through the rest of the day ..so maybe the forecast high of 59 will feel ..less chilly..., before the sun sets and temps. start dropping.

One more night of 28- 32F cold / frosty / freezy to go, 34-30F tomorrow night ..after reaching into the high 50s / lowest 60s  ..Then,  it's over  ..at least for the moment..  60s make their return Saturday and beyond.

..If it holds?  Maybe some mid 70s by this time next week / heading into next weekend. S. Cal will also see a return of nice winter weather as well. ..As it looks on the maps right now anyway.  We'll see..    Not a drop of rain forecast here atm, ..even if a couple storms pass to our north  next week.

By next Saturday, sun starts rising earlier -officially-, lol,  ....and we cross the " Adding 1+ minute to each day, every day " threshold.. Onward to Spring we go.. :greenthumb::greenthumb:

Those wondering what may be in store ..as it concerns El Nino ..Err, " El meh-da " ..according to many out this way so far?, Thoughts from Daniel Swain in his latest blog update..

Going to be interesting to see whether there will be a late winter / early spring burst in storm activity ..or, when everything is said and done w/ the season, if it ends up being a bigger bust..

Winter has finally arrived here. Tonight it is 5 C (42 F) in my patio, thankfully with no wind. I have left some sensitive plants outside, like Terminalia Catappa and Hibiscus Schizopetalus because they are too big to bring indoors. I put the pots inside bigger pots with dead leaves mulch in between, and covered the crown with a thin horticultural fleece and I hope they'll make it to spring. We expect low temperatures for another 4 days and then apparently it will be quite warm again (60F).

Currently 0°C at 10 p.m.. The arctic air ends after 3 consecutive days of hard freezes with lows of -5.5/-5.4 and -5.5°C respectively. 1 of those 3 days was a day with a sub-zero daytime high. The freeze was very dry with the humidity often below 50%. Except for this morning there hasn't even been ice on roofs or cars. This evening there was no ice either. Despite the radiation days were very sunny and this hopefully helped most of the plants. :greenthumb:☀️🥶
