I reached 22C / 72F here on Wednesday but the temperature has plummeted tonight under the clear skies. I am down to 3C / 38F at 1am here. London is still holding up at 9C / 48F though due to the UHI. Also, I'm surprised you only just saw the parakeets for the first time in 2022 as London must have close to a million of them now. I saw well over 100 parakeets when I went to southwest London a few weeks back, although I did also visit Richmond Park. I saw several flying around the two big front yard Robusta's in Richmond/Kew too.

 

 

 

The fires are absolutely raging tonight in England and Wales as the situation worsens. I am aware of 9 that are actively burning right now. The biggest is near you @Ryland

 

This is the only post I am going to make in the 'what is your current yard temperature' section, so any replies regarding the fires should be put in the other thread that I created. I have been covering the UK fires extensively with insane pictures and videos emerging. In case people hadn't viewed that thread yet, I am posting a few images of the fires here as this is the main weather thread. Also given the severity and scale, plus the fact it is occurring in March between 50-55N. The fires have been raging for 5-6 days now. The pictures above are just from tonight.

We didn't have it quite so warm as you in the south @UK_Palms but it was still a very respectable 18.4 yesterday after 18.3 the day before.  Current temperature is 7.0 (overnight low was 6.9) which is lovely for March.

Yeah it's a shame about the fires, and Marsden Moor seems to be burning every year!

I meant In my garden I did see some parakeets in February but yesterday was the first time I've seen them in my garden this year. The low here was 6.5c

I may have been warm by day but 12+ hours of radiational cooling under clear skies meant the temperature dropped down to -0.7C by sunrise. A diurnal swing of 22C (45F). It really goes to show how much of a difference the UHI of a city, or a bit of cloud cover has. Also the fire crews have done so well to combat that big moor fire near you. It seems they are well prepared to deal with it and had action plans in place, given previous fires in the region. The damage will be devastating though, sadly

Oh right, I get you now. I am only about 10-15 miles away from the outer suburbs of southwest London, yet I went down to freezing during the early hours. It really shows that the mildest parts of London have up to 6-7C / 15F of protection compared to the rural outskirts of the city. What part of London are you located in? Much cooler here today with a high of just 18.3C (65F).

Some early Spring sizzle for the weekend,  then what looks like a fairly decent chance of rain to start next week.. Not really that big of a cool down either afterwards. Back to the 80s next weekend..  Depending on High Cloud cover, High tomorrow could be 93 or 4 ..or a few deg. higher ( if cloud cover is thin enough ) Same cloud cover should help keep the next few evenings mild as well.

 

 Some flip flopping between keeping some degree of unsettled / not so hot weather around as we start April, while other model runs over the past few days try to really crank up the heat.. Both here, and across a good chunk of the Southwest / Texas where some model runs are hinting at 100 / 100+ readings for part of the state.. Just have to wait and see.  Pretty good forecast regardless.  Nice dose of rain + moderate heat afterwards next week should really wake things up.

A toasty 86F at 6:55pm as we end the first hot weekend of the year..  While clouds yesterday kept the " official " reading here to 93, many neighborhood stations were a few deg higher.  With less clouds today, we managed to top out at 95F.

Cooler forecast for the start of the week still on track as the aforementioned upper level low, currently getting ready to spin across Central and S. Cal., brings what may be the best opportunity for rain ..until late June -at least-.   While totals have backed off a little, still anticipating .15-.30" for most areas around the Valley, maybe close to an inch up in the foothills / mountains east of town .. Storm will also bring wind / potential for blowing dust tomorrow before showers arrive over night Monday.. While chances aren't great, could see some rumbles of thunder/ heavier downpours pass through Tuesday morning before the storm shifts east.

Same storm should provide a good, welcome soaking for many parts of S. Cal. tomorrow, maybe early Tuesday..

Temps. cool back to roughly 68-72F Tuesday ..depending on how long showers / cloud cover lingers during the day..  That will be it for a " cool down ' though as highs rebound back through the 80s the rest of next week/ into next weekend.  Possible the next episode of  " spring sizzle " settles in beyond next Monday..

Much cooler here today as we enter a freak cold snap this week. It is currently 13C / 55F here and after 2 weeks without a single drop of rain, I have finally picked up 1mm this morning. Not that it will help much. I can smell smoke in the air today from the north side blaze and the fires are still raging across the UK. The last 24-48 hours have seen some of the worst fire activity on record. This is largely unprecedented.

30+ active fires as of midnight last night. Roughly 400 separate fires over the past 10 days now. Evacuations in Devon and surprise surprise, disposable BBQ’s recovered from the 3 biggest fires. Hopefully things will start calming down now as winter tries to make one last final push this week. There might not be much in the way of rainfall though, which we badly need! 

Again I have been covering the UK wildfires extensively in my other thread. The scale of these fires is a direct result of drought and lack of rainfall. You know there is a climate emergency when even northern Scotland up at 58N has wildfires that are absolutely raging in March. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come in the years ahead…

Heading for 28c today with possible rain, I hope we get some as BOM have been promising rain for a week now but we haven't seen any, just dark, overcast and very high humidity. Looking forward to the cooler change as Autumn kicks in.

18C min to 22C max down here. The rain originally forecast to basically flood down here will not happen thankfully. 10 day outlook is for around 15mm accumulated. Still warm nights so hopefully we will have warmer nights thru winter.

It's 1.3ºC (34ºF) here after an overnight low of 1.1ºC, woke up to a smattering of snow on the garden.  Quite a shock turnaround after 19.1ºC (66ºC) only a few days ago!  The table in the photo is covered in snow, all the palms have a little bit settled on the fronds as well.

It was 21C here a few days ago and now we’re down well into the single digits today. I will be lucky to reach 8C this afternoon! I’m expecting a frost the next few nights as well. Proper winter weather has returned. In fact it’s going to be colder than we had it in February! I’m guessing you didn’t get any snow at all during winter, but you have now had some snowfall on the last day of March! Like you really couldn’t write it. Reminds me of last spring all over again, quite worryingly. Last April was horribly cold. 

I haven’t had a frost in ages here and the cannas have started to re-sprout, as well as grapevines. However I am expecting lows down to -3C out here in the countryside on Saturday night, which will knock any new growth back. I know in France and Spain they are frantically scrambling to get oil burners under the grapevines. France lost half of their grapes last spring due to the late frosts, which set them back over €2 billion. It looks like a repeat of that again.

Pretty much the whole of Europe is going to be effected by this last-grasp cold blast. Both ECMWF and GFS paint the same picture. Widespread cold for the whole of Europe over the next week or so with frosts along the Med even in places. Hopefully this cold doesn’t stick around like it did last April! The only positive is that it will stop the wildfires, for now at least. It’s not ideal for the crops though. All of my tomatoes and peppers are going to be stuck indoors over the next week. No chance of risking them outdoors with this forecast.

Was reading last night that Perth has had only 6.6mm from Jan 1. Not completely unheard of but dry nonetheless. We've had around 60mm in the same period by contrast. We are expecting heavy rain periods from Saturday night and all Sunday down here. Just got my drainage pipes and everything in, so the billabongs can start filling now. 

I got home last night to heavy thunder drop style rain and it rained on and off last night.

Right now its blue skies down here and going for a top of 26C. Tomorrow going for 28C. I may go down the beach in the arvo. Take every opportunity to do that down here. The humidity is up and the grass and weeds are going completely bonkers with growth.

Similar to how the month started off  last year, First full week of April looks HOT.. ( Could we crack the big 100F on one of the days forecast to reach 95 or 96? ) Then another break next weekend / Easter week, before the heat may kick it up a notch..  Regardless, Evenings look GREAT.. ( Except maybe next Tuesday morning, ..if you don't like cool-ish mornings, lol )





After last weeks quick and welcome soaking ( .. .20" to .70" around Chandler/ many parts of the East Valley ) things are really starting to break out of dormancy ..or just greening up more.  W/ " Sweet Acacia Season " pretty much wrapped up, Palo Verde across the street, and around town are picking up the slack pretty quickly..  Warm as it is, Spring is a great time here in the Sonoran Desert..

Well last night was definitely warm for down here and especially for April. In just over 8 years living down here I’ve never recorded a minimum as high as 20C (68F). Last night came so close. It stayed above or equal to 20C until 6.20am when it dropped to 19.8C and then by 7am it was back up to 20C. It may be a record for April. I’ve never felt it quite this warm at night and never in summer either.

Record cold across Europe for April in many places. I went down to -5C / 22F out in the country last night under the clear skies, which was my coldest April temperature in 30 years! Even the warmest parts of London still went down to around freezing (0C / 32F). Only one other night was colder during the whole of winter just gone for me, which is just astonishing, given that we are now in April. In the south of France they even went down to -8C / -9C in places at low elevation. Germany as well saw record breaking cold temps too.

 

Astonishing amounts of snow in parts of France...

 

I mentioned about the cold affecting grapes in France especially. The farmers have set out tens of thousands of oil lamp burners to try and save what they can. I suspect they are still going to be looking at up to 50% losses though, which will probably exceed 3 billion Euros this time around. 

This is a direct result of an abnormally warm March triggering everything into growth, followed immediately by an abnormally cold April with temperatures that kill back any new growth. Some places may see a 100% loss rate in their grapes and other frost sensitive plants. This may be even worse than last year and cost the French up to 5 billion Euros in losses.

 

More records will be broken in southern France, Corsica and Germany on Sunday night. Expect the cost of French wine to skyrocket over the next year. I also notice tomatoes are not being sold in the stores over here now. They have suddenly disappeared, likely due to economic issues across Europe.
