Only 6 days into November now and I am already on 5.1 inches of rainfall for the month. Torrential thunderstorms again last night. Over an inch of rain recorded in 10 minutes between 4:55am - 5:05am. Sleeping with the window open due to indoor residual heat and humidity, only to be awoken to the sound of a nuclear bomb going off, which was actually thunder and sheet lightning. The switch has clearly been flipped to wet and stormy here after months of high pressure and calm, dry conditions.

Anyway, it's a mild 13C / 55F here at 11am. Mild is certainly the theme. The cannas are putting out new flower stalks and I am noticing sunflowers sprouting up in places already. The garden is actually waterlogged in places now. The last time that occurred was over a year ago, in perhaps October 2021, following the last major wet spell. Autumn/fall is getting progressively wetter here year on year, especially October and November. Its getting milder too obviously. We do have a drier spell starting mid-week, thankfully.

This is why I think for growing exotics, especially frost tender plants in the UK, you need fast draining soil. If there was lots of rain then a clear skies cold night, that could easily lead to root rot for things such as queen's. Luckily no sign of any frost for any part of London in the forecast.

The current temperature at my location in the North Carolina mountains is 69F (21C). Unusually warm for this late in the year.

Rain this morning gave way to partly cloudy skies for the remainder of the day. Expecting clearing skies as the day progresses.

Not complaining though, I'll take this over the inevitable bitter cold any-day. However, unfortunately, we are expecting our first major cold-front late next week. Yay. 🙄

Picture perfect November weekend for the Desert.. Cool mornings / nice afternoons.  Start off the new week exactly the same.  Storm scheduled for mid-week looks ..ahhh, weak.. ..at least here.  Has definitely trended more north over the last several model runs.

California / North / Eastern AZ, Great Basin, and  Inter mountain areas of the west will definitely get some rain /snow w/ it but don't expect a block buster.  Storm heads east rather quickly, returning local weather to your regularly scheduled programming.  Next few storms that might brush California will largely pass w/ out much effect here.

Current forecast looks pretty solid for next week.. A cooler Wednesday than Monday or Tuesday, followed by mild days / typically seasonable evenings the rest of the week / next weekend..  Great sleeping weather w/ the window cracked open. Can't be beat for getting a jump start on 2023 projects.

Some hopeful signs La Nina is about to get the boot:  From today's update on Storm Surf.. We'll see how this progresses over the next 3 or 4 months.

What a surprise, it’s pouring with rain again here. This is probably one of the wettest starts to a November on record, if not the wettest. Flood warnings are in place. The end of my road is flooded. The garden is waterlogged. Creeks, rivers, lakes and reservoirs are filling back up again, at least. The summer drought is almost a distant memory here now. Everything is almost going through a late final bloom now due to intense rainfall and mild temps.

How we can go from 5-6 months of almost no rain at all to having 3 months worth of rain in 6 days, I don’t know. I guess this will become the new norm moving forward. Thunderstorms used to be unheard of in November as well, until now. They used to only occur in the warmer months, but now we don’t get many at all in summer due to high pressure ridging. Instead thunderstorms seem to be increasing in autumn/fall.

Makes me wonder what the rest of winter will have in store now. Probably a super wet washout with mild temps. The precipitation trend is following a Med pattern with most of the the annual rainfall coming in cooler months and more intense downpours too. November will be the wettest month of the year by far, I am confident of that. I bet December follows suit too. Anyway it’s currently a mild 16C / 61F here at midday.

Jokes aside, California is definitely on track for some reasonably beneficial rain / Snow however w/ this next storm. Nevada and Utah as well..

@UK_Palms16c here as well in London I think this winter will be fairly mild and the summer will also be at least slightly above average. There has been quite a bit of rain today. We will probably have a wet nov-dec then it will slowly get drier into Jan untill turning back to drought in the summer. Royal seedlings still growing outside and Bismarckia outside is pushing out a new center spear since I've been away in the canary Islands, though all the rain seems to have washed some of the grey blueish colour of the palm.

@Foxpalms “Quite a bit of rain” :floor:

I’ve had 6.8 inches of the stuff in the first week of November! I believe its the wettest start to any month on record for me here. On the current trajectory, it will comfortably be the wettest month on record, even with the dry spell coming up. I think I only need another 2 inches to break the all-time monthly rainfall record and it’s currently raining again now as I type this.

The amount of thunderstorms for November has been ridiculous. Climate change has reduced them happening in summer and increased them in the cooler months due to warmer temps = heavier downbursts with the low pressure around at this time of year, unlike in summer.

The dry spell can’t come soon enough for me. The low last night was only 13C / 56F but more heavy rain again overnight. Drier and mild moving forward at least. Doubt it will last though. End of November and December will be a washout too and mild.

Another great weekend ahead..  A touch on the cool-ish side ..but nothing to whine about ( Whining = Only acceptable when lows drop below 28F for more than two nights -in a row )..

Stays in the same ball bark thru next week as some "inside sliders", ...a term used to describe low pressure systems that move N.W. to E.S.E. -through the Great Basin, before turning east  east of New Mexico... keep temperatures / 500mb heights subdued across the Southwest for the next 6-9 days.

Maybe a few light snow showers across N. AZ / UT. and CO. w one slider passing by this weekend..  Another "storm" on the model runs later might bring better opportunities for snow over New Mexico / interior CO. sometime next week.. If that system drops due south from Colorado as some model runs have suggested..

"Cool in the West"  Pattern may shift east around / not long after the 20th.. We'll see..  Some showers possible at times across Cen. and Nor Cal.,  Status Quo across the Pac. N.W.  ..though maybe not quite as chilly up there later..

On a side note,  Now less than a month away from the shortest  Sunset  of the year...  Data via Time and Date..  Image is Dec. 8th-11th. for Chandler, AZ.

It looks like I beat out London on Friday with a max of 18.1C / 64F here. Very mild and I have still been wearing shorts at work. Northwest Scotland coming in at 18C / 64F at sunrise on Friday morning, however due to the way that the Met Office take recordings (9am - 9am) the official overnight low was 14.6C / 58F. Still ridiculous for 57N latitude in mid-November.

I see London will be warmer than Houston by day and night this weekend, despite Houston (29N) being a whopping 22 degrees latitude further south (1,500 miles) closer to the equator compared to London (51N). Also London nights still warmer than Los Angeles at 34N. The lowest temp across entire British Isles was 10C / 50F past 2 nights. Los Angeles however is 8C / 47F at the time of writing this.

There is zero ice or snow present in the UK, even at the top of the highest Scottish mountains. The Braeriach glacier in Scotland (400m above sea level) is long dead nowadays, despite being at 57N. Again the lowest temperature in the entire British Isles past few nights was 10C / 50F. This mountain used to have snow cover in summer even back 20-30 years ago.

Maxed out at 68f/20c in London today. We had clear skies it's amazing that it's this warm considering the lack of strength in the sun, the UV was a 0.8 today.  As UK palms said it has been warmer than anywhere in Texas in London. It's also warmer than Los Angeles today, the same high but warmer at night, las Vegas, San Francisco and auckland. Even next week when the highs drop because we aren't getting southern winds, the lows will still be as warm and on some nights warmer than Los Angeles. All the palms are still growing fairly fast in November. The washingtonia robusta has made 2 new fronds in the past 2 weeks. What's surprising is the fact the Bismarckia is still growing and pushing out a new center spear.

18C / 64F max in London yesterday at Kew with the coldest night in a week or so, falling down to a chilly 9.7C / 49F here last night under clearish skies. Brrrr.

Temperatures have reached 21C / 70F in places this afternoon, including Wales. Date records for November 13th broken in numerous places across England, Scotland and Wales.

All the trees are blossoming again and spring bulbs are sprouting. My canna is opening new flowers. It's officially winter in just over 2 weeks. I am 35 miles inland from the coast at 51N with no urban heat island either as I am out in the sticks / countryside. When will the frost come? I don't think St James Park in central London has gone below 6C / 43F yet.

Currently 53f with with 85% humidity in London. I've just been thinking about something, the "official" record high in the UK is 40.3c but technically it's 158f/70c ( I have also heard reports it has gotten up to 92c/197f) back when the walkie talkie building in central London at a certain time of the day, because of the curvature in the building used to concrete all the sunlight off it down to street level in a part of London. Which lead to cars melting and people being able to fry eggs on the ground! Unfortunately they have since modified it, but if you were to place mirrors concreting the sun light into one part of the garden with a bunch of palms that do better with high heat, I wonder if you could increase the monthly average high by 2-3c  for every month? Might be another way to create and maximize a microclimate!

The cold is finally biting here. Only 12.8C / 55F at 2pm. Still no sign of any frosts yet, although we may have 1-2 single digit highs (C) over weekend. Nighttime lows down to 5C / 43F for the capital. The coldest spell since March is coming, so it will be a bit of a shock to the system. Nothing serious yet though. My Becarriophoenix Alfredii is still outside, for now.

Monitoring the long range GFS forecast into December with 15-16C / 60F forecast for the first actual day of winter. That could change though. Looking mild though nonetheless.

The high in London today was 57f/13.8c. Its currently cloudy and raining the low tonight is 10c. @UK_Palms My Beccariophoenix except for fenestralis are also still outside. It looks like the Jetstream might start pulling up air from southern Europe up to the Uk around the 24th for a few days, at the moment we are getting the cool wet cloudy weather from off the Atlantic. Everyday its sunny the highs are usually higher than the forecast in London, so hopefully Friday and Saturdays highs are 1-2 warmer.

I have my new thermometers set up and it’s interesting to see how big of difference makes. The fully exposed thermometer is 58f, the lanai thermometer (my official one) is 60f, and the south side of the house is 66f.

It's supposed to cool down tonight.  It's still 73F with a dewpoint of 71F here in Melbourne.
