We have clear skies tonight, it's still above freezing since London has one of the biggest urban heat islands in Europe so it takes a very long time to cool down.  -1.5 is colder than it's been all year here I hope it doesn't go below -1c this week so the Alexandrae doesn't get damaged. Where that is it's about 1.5-2c warmer. We also have lots of sunshine tomorrow so the temperatures should get up to around 5c. We had clouds all day earlier so it didn't warm up much. There was snow in London but central London didn't have much (a very light dusting) the small amount here all melted. When it snowed the temperature was around +2c but even Athens Greece has had worse snow so it's not too bad. It wasn't able to settle on the plants as it would melt and only stick last night in colder spots. One thing I'm glad we won't get are freezing winds here, the wind speeds always 0mph during a freeze.

I know about the London climate. It's amazing! I guess the wide spreading of the city is very beneficial. I've got the "normal" heat island effect, because I live in a big city. Yet there has to be said that my city is part of a very large urbanised area - the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region with almost 11 million people. But as it's not just one city there are several heat islands and the effect isn't as great as in London. Plus the northern and especially north-eastern parts of the metropolitan region are much colder than the Rhineland area in the south of it. Most beneficial is the Cologne bay, which is also a natural formation that is keeping the weather mild but also hot in summer. It's like a V-shape river basin that's well protected. With that we get warmer winters even than a lot of cities further west in the Netherlands and Belgium. The closest thing is already the coast of England. But right now the weather is coming from the worst angle we could get - the north-west, which is very unusual. Oh and I live in the South of my city which seems to be warmer than the north, probably because it's more densly populated Idk. So whenever I look on the weather forcast, I have to look at Düsseldorf and Cologne and then guess how it's turning out for me. My garden is located in a densly developed suburban area so this gives me also a great microclimate. All of this combined might make it an effect as big as the heat island of London, but in a generally cooler region so it's still nowhere near as mild as your location. And by the way it's 2 a.m. and we're at -3°C now. I just hope it doesn't get much colder this night, because the skies are still clear but the temperature is falling in a slow pace.

What's your exact location? If this is considered cold I'm guessing not Northern California right?

Hopefully it changes and you get cloud cover. I don't see it getting any colder than -1.5c here this week under clear skies the temperature drops very slowly at night. Today was the coldest day in the UK since 2010. My frost tender palms seem to be undamaged, even the bougainvillea in London still has all of its flowers and leaves so it clearly didn't get that cold in central London. Everyday has raised a few degrees c above freezing especially on the sunny days here. Did Manchester get any snow?

Thanks.  Manchester got a little snow shower on Saturday morning but it didn't stick for long despite the low temperatures (between 0 and 1 all day Saturday).  Some of the outer suburbs and outlying areas have kept a bit of it but it was hardly anything, very patchy.

I didn't realise about that being the coldest day since 2010!  Not a good situation to repeat - that's when Manchester's all-time record low occurred.  At the moment it's -1.5ºC and today was the earliest dip below freezing at 2pm, so I'm expecting tonight to be the coldest so far.  The overall temperatures haven't been very unusual or serious, but I'm starting to worry about my palms just because of the amount of time below freezing - they aren't having any thaw at all.  It's not very far below freezing though, so should it be an issue?  I had to use a fan heater to get rid of some ice sitting in the crown of my Cycas revoluta though - not a good sign.

A cooolll 42F at 9:35, headed down somewhere into the mid/ lower 30s by Sunrise..  Cool mid/ upper 50s continue for the remainder of the week, with the moderation trend still looking on tap for X-mass Week..

Anticipating the typical frost, but no freeze here.. We'll see what Friday morning brings. Looks no worse than last year, or the last 6 winters here at this point..  Will be a distant memory soon enough.

Further out?, Yep, looking like the rain spigot is shutting off for a while..

This could be interesting later on in Jan. ( Hint: look over the CFS weekly 2m Temp anomaly forecast ( goes out 6 weeks ) ..Day to day model runs have been kinda consistent lately..  Notice what they're showing.. ) Skeptical, as one should be, .. but,  we'll see..

0.2C / 32F at 8:30pm here. This is the warmest it has been all day and I was at -1.3C / 29F as recently as 4pm after sunset due to the clear skies. Thankfully cloud cover has moved in and risen the temps a bit. Slightly surprising as the Met Office were forecasting a low of -8C / 18F for me tonight. I doubt it will get anywhere near that cold tonight now.

Yet more unwanted records here though as it is the first time that I have ever had 8 consecutive days fail to reach 5C during the first half of December. I think it will also be the first time on record that I have ever had 7 consecutive nighttime frosts (<0C) as well during the first half of December too. That record will be broken in the next few hours. So I have had about 10 various and individual records set now during this freeze.

Today I visited the notorious Wisley frost pocket, which is about 15 minutes drive NE from my location. This is well outside of the London UHI area and these Washingtonia are located right out in the open near a field, with no buildings or anything nearby. It can get very, very cold on clear winter nights there. Some snow was even present when I visited.

They have probably seen -8C / 18F at least once and about 100 hours below freezing, with zero protection during this freeze. Plus about 6-7 consecutive nights of frost too. So far, they appear okay. Whether or not damage will show in coming weeks/months when it warms up? They are both listed as Robusta, but probably Filibusta's in all likelihood.

I hope those Washingtonia will be ok, maybe you can provide an update late spring.

It’s now -3.7°C (25°F) here and falling fast under clear skies. Last night saw a low of -3.7°C which is the coldest temperature here since early 2018. Tonight will be colder.

I'm down to -3.8C / 25F now here as the skies have cleared. A drop of 4C in the space of 3 hours. Definitely going down to at least -6C / 20F tonight. This is now definitely my lowest average December temperature on record up to 15th. The average has never been lower, not even during the 62' December freeze. It was actually almost 1C higher back then.

We've just got to make it to the weekend until relief comes as the Atlantic influence kicks back into force again. I've actually got double digit C lows here even come Sunday/Monday. London has a 15-16C max and 12C low come then. However the damage may already be done at that point, certainly outside of cities and coastal areas. Like where I am.

-1.2c here now, the temperature is slowly dropping under clear skies. Hopefully the clear sunny skies all day tomorrow rise the temperature up to 3 or 4c. It looks like tomorrow night might get some cloud around 1am so hopefully that saves you from another bad freeze.

London is absolutely freezing tonight. Coldest central London temperatures in about 5 years there since the 'Beast from the East' event in February 2018. Also the coldest London temperatures in first half of December since the infamous freeze of December 1962, I believe. Or at least it will be the coldest temps in 60 years during first half of December come dawn in 4-5 hours. Met Office records go back about 80 years. So this is a proper bad early freeze for us.

The mildest spots in the heart of the city are probably down to -2C / 28F right now under the clear skies. They'll likely see -3C / 26F probably. Again last time the most protected parts of the city got that cold was February 2018. Stuff like Archontophoenix, Beccariophoenix, Chambeyronia, Kentia etc will struggle there on nights like this, during serious freezes. The daytime temperature has barely been rising above freezing for 3-4 days now. Let us know how your ones fare...?

It's -1.5c right now in the coldest part of the garden the the mildest spots of London are at -1.3c right now there doesn't seem to be a massive difference between there and here probably because all the concrete and masonry  hasn't had much heat to absorb during the day.  I'm not sure why the other covent garden wunderground stations is showing -2c on you're photo since I just checked it now and it's -1.4c. My wunderground temperatures are in Fahrenheit though which is more accurate so I'm guessing it rounded it down for you. Either way tonight's going to be cold. It's definitely possible that even the warmest spots may go down to -2.5c but we will see in the morning.

@RylandI hope you're palms are all ok it looks very bad in Manchester right now. There's still 2 more hours of cooling too so it may get even worse. Even the city center is looking very cold. The temperature is still holding above -2c in the warmer parts of London. I'm sure in the city center it didn't get as cold as the forecast since that always happens in London but the forecast is showing -9c/16f.The bottom imagine is the temperature around Westminster London.

It's not looking good.  Currently -5.4ºC, the low was -5.5ºC (22ºF), so the coldest night here since December 2010 and the first 9a winter since 2018.  Some outlying areas have been as cold as -8 to -10.  There's a really good private weather station in the outer suburbs that has temperature records going back to 2009, they're at -8.2 right now: http://www.cheadlehulmeweather.co.uk.

The spear leaf of the Washingtonia has collapsed.  Not a good sign.  I hope it will survive, Washingtonia should be ok with -5ºC perhaps with some damage, but the extended time below freezing is more worrying for me now.  Hope yours are all looking ok in London, it's certainly got an advantage of a few degrees on the coldest nights.

It got to -2.2c/28f here. Closer to the house under tree canopy it was 29.9f/-1c on but even closer towards the house it would of likely have been slightly warmer. Hopefully the next few winters are the usual mild winters without a big freeze and the rest of this winter is mild!

We are going to need all the prayers we can get. Some parts of suburban London had their coldest night in 31 years last night and 3rd coldest night in past 82 years. Colder than anything during December 2010, which in itself was the coldest month ever on record. Temperatures 10-15C below average for a lot of us. This is our ‘palmageddon’ event.

It wouldn’t be so bad if those lows were during a brief cold snap, but having it during this prolonged freeze, which was already record breaking, could spell disaster for many palms. It’s the 4th coldest start to a December in 121 years for central England, but it’s the coldest ever start for a December in my southern location here. Looks like a max of +0.6C here today after an overnight low of -7.8C. Another bad radiation freeze to come tonight under the clear skies.

We just have to hold on for another 3 days/nights now until relief arrives…

@UK_PalmsThose are definitely some very unfortunate temperatures you are seeing escpially with that max afterwards. The high today here was 3.5c. I was looking at the metoffice cloud forecast and we should get cloud at around 2am and even earlier where you are, hopefully that saves you slightly tonight. If we can stay above -1c till then tonight might not be too bad. The first half of the night will be clear skies though so for you it will still probably get below -4c.

-2.3°C currently at not even 5 p.m.. Last night was the coldest of the current cold blast. It got down to -6°C in my garden. That was around 3 a.m.. After that the temperture rose a bit and dipped again by 9 a.m. But the worst thing is that today it didn't really heat up much. It went just a little above freezing but that didn't help much. With -5°C in the morning in foggy conditions it took some time to get at least a bit warmer. The sun came finally out. Now we have clear skies again... GREAT! Love me some more cloudless nights! I really can't wait for sunday, where it's finally getting warmer!

It would be nice if you could connect you're weather station to that app. I would actually use it if that was possible since the forecast it uses doesn't seem to be particularly accurate.

It's almost exactly the same for me in both conditions and sentiment.  After -5.5 last night it never heated up and stayed below freezing for a high of -0.2ºC, but it's been clear skies all along, not a cloud since Tuesday.  The temperature is currently dropping like a stone too, it's already -3.4ºC (26ºF) and the forecast low was -4 so we are clearly going to be colder than that, perhaps colder even than last night too.

I'll be constructing some kind of cover in time for Sunday, to keep the coming rain off of my Washingtonia in case it manages to survive.  But by the look of it already, -5ºC is too cold for Washingtonia survival in this climate (too much humidity I guess).

It seems to be much drier here than in Manchester it was 3.5c here with 60% humidity today and there hasn't been much frost at night. It's 1.2c here at the moment. Tonight is going to be very bad for some areas, I see parts of inland southern England already down to 18f/-7.7c whilst it's still 34.2f here.

I'm also worried about one of my Washingtonias. In this weather it's hard to tell if damaged or just discoloration. But I'm pretty sure that one of the smaller Washingtonia is going to have some severe damage. We're also already at the coldest temperture predicted for this night, but it is fluctuatiing. Some hours it's warmer then it gets colder again. We might get some clouds or fog but not sure yet. But I think the worst is actually the prolonged cold conditions. Today I tried to get my hand through the frozen mulch to check the soil underneath and to my surprise it was still soft. I can't wait for some mild Atlantic breeze. These are the times where I swear I'm never going to complain about the dark and the rain in the winter again LOL...

I've found the app to be sometimes equal to, or more often 2degC lower than the real time readings from the local NZmetservice station in the city. I've never seen the forecast function on the app so maybe I'm not using all of its functions.
