Photos from a friend published w/permission Third photo is the happy owner of this palm (Jean Luc Debry) in extreme SW France, which was transplanted on his property 2 yrs ago from the Alicante Region. (Where the seed was apparently dropped by a bird). Also notable is attempts to grow this from seed is futile as they all come up albino and subsequently die.  I hope I got the story of this palm right, as there’s another growing on La Palma island in Canaries.

Non! Je pense que c'est horriblement laid! (No! I think it's horribly ugly!)

Just my humble, yet belligerent, opinion.

While palm shopping at a big box this past weekend I found this 5-gal specimen.  I wonder if it will hold the variegation?  Looks like the real deal as it shows the variegation in the petioles and old leaf boots.

Odd that it is only on one part of one side of that leaf!  That will have an neat look when it gets big.  More so I think than being albino on both sides of the bi-pinnate leaf which tends to look like a dying leaf or nutritional deficiency.  Either way, both are a cool look.

Yes, I wondered the same thing.  All of the other plants at the garden center had at least 5 or 6 more leaves than this one so I wondered if they were mostly yellow and cut off prematurely.  I'm curious to see how this will look down the road as the newest leaf is showing some of the variegation as well.  :)  Looks like it's got enough green to survive.

@Fusca if for any reason you feel you can't give it a home, there's always California! :D

Fusca,

Very cool find. I can't believe that no one at the nursery noticed that they had something special and allowed it to sell to the public! HGC has their massive grow out center in the town that I live in. I guess that they have gotten so big with people working it are just employees and no one that comes into daily contact with the plants are actually plant people anymore.

Yeah, I think there are very few employees there that have much knowledge of palms since they sell such a variety of plants.  They know enough to keep the plants alive but that's about it.  I've asked for advice from them several times when I first started growing palms (before PalmTalk) but the advice I got from them did not turn out to be helpful and had to learn on my own.

From the HGC's that I have been to it's just a J O B for them and nothing more.
