okay, i can only hope that all the exotics that can take damage at such low temperatures, including the cocos, will survive and thrive again.

if someone had told me that it could fall so low, i wouldn't have believed it. i've been to cyprus twice in paphos and the surrounding area and it was both in october and very nice all along the line.

Northern Nicosia (the invaded part) was even lower at -5.3C  during the morning hours.

Stelios lives in Paphos which was down to +2.0C last night so not so extreme Ts compared to Nicosia. But still very difficult for cocos to withstand this.

Actually it dipped even lower at -3.7C which is the lowest T in Nicosia from 1983!

Incredible indeed, given that 4 parallels to the north I have recorded so far this year a min of only 1.8 C.

Yes, but still extremely low temperatures.
It would be really bad to lose them after all these years...
-5.3 degrees Celsius, really very low when I think that we had -6 degrees Celsius as the lowest temperature here in the community garden once, of course several additional frost days, no ice days, but we are close to Lake Constance and much higher up 412m, in the north and so on ...

Das ist wirklich unglaublich, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich in diesem Jahr an vier Breitengraden im Norden bisher eine Temperatur von mindestens nur 1,8 °C gemessen habe.

Yes, this change is here. 15 years ago we didn't have so many double-digit plus temperatures in winter and the minimum temperatures are also constantly falling, so it's all the more extreme when it falls deep into minus again ... Challengingly positively formulated

Which is one of the lowest Ts of the Athens Riviera during this cold snap. For example the port of Piraeus never dropped below 3.7C in this cold snap. I remember you were saying you live at a higher altitude close to the coast. That's why you get more T inversions. The Vari NOA station which is more inland and more prone to T inversions was even down to 0.8C

Limassol port was down to 0.0C on the 23rd Feb, Paphos (city station) 0.7C and Larnaca AP -1.1C on the 24th. Incredibly Zygi in coastal Larnaca dropped to as low as -2.2C on the 23rd!

The -3.7C in Nicosia has been the lowest T since 1983 when records began for the Athalassa station!

Even though most people think that coastal Cyprus is virtually impossible to drop below 0.0C that is not correct. During rare cold snaps coming from Turkey and especially when conditions are right for temperature inversions the huge landmass of the island takes its toll even on the coasts which then can rarely bring below 0.0C Ts.

The all time record low T for Paphos and Larnaca is -3.9C  during the famous 1950 East Med cold snap which brought even 20 cm of snow to Tel Aviv! That record is very close to Hellenikon station record of -4.2C and we have data for Hellenikon from 1949. So as you can see on some very rare occasions coastal Cyprus can resemble the Athens Riviera minimums. In contrast coastal south Crete can never go so low due to its lesser landmass.

This cold snap has been one of the strongest to hit Cyprus since 1950....and the irony is that Ts went down without actually rain or snow (for most places) but with the sheer power of T inversions.

Here is a list of the lowest Ts in Cyprus on the 23rd of Feb 2025. Note a new national record of -14.2C in Limassol area (at 840 m altitude).

Better we revive a relevant topic in the weather/climate subforum and quit this topic, cause I have more feedback about recent cold spell in Southern Attica.
