Mike (waykoolplantz),

Those are some spectacular Coryphas! Love'em!!

Here's our biggest C. umbraculifera - right in front of our house, and about 30 ft away from the front door.

30 ft away from the front door? What's the spread on that thing when mature... 30ft?

Terry,

I've seen mature ones (there are three of them in a private garden near Hilo) and while very impressive. the spread from the trunk out to the tips of the leaflets is less than 30 ft. Maybe close to 20 ft... :P  I wanted something in front of the house (where we also have a small parking area) that's going to be dramatic. And I actually planted TWO C. umbraculifera.... Now THAT may have been pushing my luck!

Kris,

You can certainly cut off the lower fronds once they begin to "hang down" in a more horizontal fashion, and only leave the fronds that are more upright. This leads to one other "little" detail: these are VERY large fronds, and you need to have a place where you can dispose of them!!

the Lecomptei holds it's fronds more upright...and may be a better choice than Umbraculifera

ibreakforpalms - There is a small nursery out west on Northlake Blvd. (which is north of you) that has a large talipot out front that has been there for at least 15 years (40'+ tall). I've stopped and talked to them about it, and they said they have numerous ones on their farms throughout the area.
